For full information I grew up in the area and its only since moving to "the South" that I've appreciated just how affluent the area is. Despite people having Yorkshire accents.

Obviously Liz Truss isnot as rich as Rishi Sunak but that is not saying much

Not everyone who grew up in Roundhay has Yorkshire accents even, some are almost completely indistinguishable from those who grew up in Surrey, except when it comes to hating Lancashire.

tootiredtobother · 22/07/2022 10:28

rank and file conservative member here and i'm not racist, thank you very much SerendipitJane.. and we are still trying to get the best for Gt Britain due to the frankly petty minded EU NOT wanting a fellow first world country to respect the democratic vote its citizens had. Go and live in North Korea, and see how you like that. and i'm not watching this thread now or replying to you

Please can we clarify: Has Liz Truss herself made any claims about Roundhay being a Red Wall constituency with all that entails? Or is it posters on this thread saying it?

If it's the first then not only is it dishonest of Truss but also unbelievably stupid.
I find it hard to believe she would sabotage her own her campaign with such easily disprovable nonsense.

If it's the second then I suggest we move on. It's an interesting thread to me as I don't know much about either candidate and I would be sorry to see it derailed.

She said it herself in a piece in the Telegraph on 10 July.

My commitment to this agenda runs deep. I grew up in Leeds, at the heart of the Red Wall. I was educated at a comprehensive school in the city and went to primary school in Scotland. I got where I am today through working hard and focusing on results

Floisme · 22/07/2022 10:36

Thanks jgw1 and Tanith for the clarification. In that case dishonest, stupid and not to be trusted with anything, especially not with women's rights, is my conclusion.

I like that your post clearly shows that you are in no way racist.

But perhaps still a better choice than someone who breaks the law, is happy with billions of pounds of fraud, likes you paying tax, but not his family, thinks the economy is broken, but doesn't.know that he broke it.

Floisme · 22/07/2022 10:39

And Blossomtoes - cross post, thank you too.

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 22/07/2022 10:43

I used to live in Roundhay. Utterly hilarious to see it painted as red wall, 'grim up north'. Roundhay park was the model for Central Park in NY. My street was full of doctors, lawyers, dentists, but we were a good five minutes walk from the park - you'd need more money coming in for the big stone built houses nearer the park. Roundhay is gorgeous.

If you're confusing me with someone who will have a say in this choice then I don't. Like I said, I didn't know a lot about either candidate beyond the headline stuff and now I have evidence that Truss is no more to be trusted with women's rights than any other politician, then I think any personal interest I might have had in who wins is at an end.

Floisme why does it change what you think re women’s rights?

Truss has been ok on that front hasn’t she?

If she lies like a cheap Japanese watch about her background, why would you trust what she says about anything else? She obviously says whatever’s expedient at the time - like changing her mind on Brexit, the monarchy and which political party to belong to.

I would actually prefer Rishi - not that I particularly like either (or would ever vote for them).

I think with Liz - she's not the most competent and I suspect BJ will still be pulling the strings.

I think Rishi would do better on the international stage.

I am happier to pay higher taxes as long as those who need it most get some extra help.

It's a bit like deciding whether you'd rather be executed by hanging or electrocution, but I agree with you.

I thought we'd reached the nadir of stupid irresponsible populism under Johnson, but the idea that tax cuts are the answer to the twin problems of runaway inflation and over-strained public services, when any economics undergraduate can tell you they are the precise opposite, just beggars belief.

National debt is already off the scale. If Labour were looking at making it even higher to win short term votes we would be deafened by howls about the magic money tree. But hey, the Tories are the party of fiscal responsibility after all.

Truss will absolutely destroy the country. Sunak will just oversee its continued sad decline.

You didn't know that a member of the government who has consistently removed rights, particularly from women for the past 12 years wouldn't protect women's rights?

I am flabbergasted.

BlackTourmaline · 22/07/2022 11:01

I suspect Liz will get because she’s the right colour

But does she know what a woman is?

MarshaBradyo · 22/07/2022 11:07

People can vote for who they want, gender based statements from Starmer are more of an indication to me

But still interested in fellow FWR pp who cares about women’s rights on what they think

Does the area she talks about have a Labour MP or Cons out of interest

Truss is leading, it’s not ‘the right colour’ as pp put it it’s more likely tax policies, Sunak’s spending which has been high, and his own barrier with wife’s wealth

Badenoch was leading polls with party members in any case

Imo are reacting to huge spending after last few years and media fixation on wealth

I need to hear more to say which I’d go for if choosing but Sunak on debt and inflation sound better to me so far

Floisme · 22/07/2022 11:10

So far yes I think she has, and it's possible I'm being too hasty - it wouldn't be the first time! But I believe the next PM will be subject to intense Stonewall and TRA lobbying, the likes of which we've probably never seen before, and I fear a PM who tells such stupid and easily disprovable lies would be extra vulnerable to that kind of pressure.

I'm still very relieved Mordaunt didn't get through! But I think whoever wins between these two will will need watching very, very closely, as well their cabinet.

@Floisme You do know that Truss is part of a government that is actively considering withdrawing from the European Court of Human Rights?

How anyone can say that a member of such a government is good on rights, baffles me.

Blossomtoes · 22/07/2022 11:14

Me too @jgw1. I’m quite keen on retaining my human rights.

No need to @ me jgw1, I am on the thread as you know. If you don't understand why posters on a feminist board are focusing on women's rights then I can't help you.

You also seem to be directing a lot of your posts towards me so this is the last one I'm going to respond to. Have a good day.

As far as I know women are humans, and removing human rights also removes rights from women?

Are we happy that the kind of protests held by the suffragettes have been made illegal by the current government?

Probably the right way to go. Thanks for your answer below, when FWR is where we get the tired old know what a woman is crying emoji type stuff I’m out too.

Maybe it’ll revert back later

SerendipityJane · 22/07/2022 11:38

@Floisme You do know that Truss is part of a government that is actively considering withdrawing from the European Court of Human Rights?

In signing the GFA the UK promised that Northern Ireland would remain covered by the ECHR. So that only matters if you are in Scotland, England or Wales. It would be a fuckwitted PM that began their term in office breaking a treaty the US has made a point of underwriting. Although I remind readers that "not being a fuckwit" is way down on the list of qualities a Tory MP needs. Well below "can bribed", "lies easily" and "has no discernible morality". Much like "knows what a woman is". Yes, they may do. But how quickly will they dump that "belief" if it suits them.
