Anyone fancy Money Box this afternoon at 3pm on Radio 4?

Felicity Hannah and a panel of experts talk money when you are transgender or non-binary.

I,too, heard this in the car. I must say, being asked to produce ID to a bank can be a bit annoying but I understand why it’s being asked for and I also don’t take it as an insult that the bank think I’m a fraudster. I may have raised my eyebrows and hmphd somewhat when Jane said that the law surrounding NB/gender fluid identities is now settled under EA2010 after Taylor v JLR and that NB is a protected characteristic.

bellinisurge · 20/07/2022 16:28

@mosesb you do parenting your way. I certainly tell my dd white lies here and there but the truth is kinder . We are all non-binary. We have both stereotypically male and stereotypically female traits. And the opposite. Some are more one than the other. Some are a mix of both. Sometimes it depends what we're doing from hour to hour. That doesn't make us special.

mosesb · 20/07/2022 16:24

What are you all so hateful?

My child says they are non binary. I hate that secretly everyone is saying all this horrible stuff about them

Gently, I think you may be projecting your own disquiet onto other people, here. Nobody is saying horrible stuff about your child. I've no idea who your child is!

I understand al that and we've talked about that. Why are you criticising my parenting, I'm glad your children are so perfect. I have an intelligent, funny and autistic child who says they want me to use they pronouns. It's not going to kill me to support them.

I'm just sad that they're going to have to deal with all these older people smirking and rolling their eyes at them.

bellinisurge · 20/07/2022 16:31

I grew up in the 70s and 80s. Gender nonconformity was embraced back then. It went to shit with the Kardashian era.

mosesb · 20/07/2022 16:31

And yes, I've told them we are all non binary

mosesb · 20/07/2022 16:33

The next comment will be about how my household is full of gender stereo types. It isn't. I work in IT, they've had all the toys trains, dolls whatever.

PearlClutch · 20/07/2022 16:33

Older people? How very dare you. I'm not a day over 120.

bellinisurge · 20/07/2022 16:33

I'm not criticising your parenting. I said explicitly that I tell lies to my kid because it's easier sometimes. But ultimately, when it matters, you have to tell the truth.
And I apologise for the term "white lie". That was silly

mosesb · 20/07/2022 16:33

I do all the DIY, my partner does all the cooking

mosesb · 20/07/2022 16:34

What white lie do you want me to tell them? I'm sorry I'm not understanding

Well you're wearing pearls so I'm judging

bellinisurge · 20/07/2022 16:34

If your child is born male, you should tell him to respect women and girls single sex spaces.

mosesb · 20/07/2022 16:35

Well they were born female

bellinisurge · 20/07/2022 16:36

I think telling a child that they are non-binary is a lie. Where you mean that they don't have a sex or that their sex is not important.
My sex isn't important except when it is. And then it's very important.

mosesb · 20/07/2022 16:36

Whatever folks, just want you to know that lots of mothers read this and worry for how much hate their children will get. I can't tell them they're wrong and lose our relationship. That means more to me than any politics

bellinisurge · 20/07/2022 16:38

Then tell your female born child that there are lots of magnificent women in history that achieved mighty things. They didn't need to pretend they weren't women to do that.

PearlClutch · 20/07/2022 16:38

mosesb · 20/07/2022 16:34

If I gave you diamonds and pearls
Would you be a happy boy or a girl?
If I could I would give you the world
But all I can do is just offer you my love

ParvuliThankYouDebbie · 20/07/2022 15:31

Such self obsessed twaddle. Didn’t hear the beginning but basically, the people speaking right now are expecting to not be treated the same as everyone else but to actually be treated differently. IE they don’t want to have to be asked to prove their identity with documentation as that’s discriminatory even though every other individual dealing with a bank would have to submit documents to prove their identity. 🤷‍♀️. If there’s an account in the name of Joanna and a man’s voice is on the end of the phone then the banks fraud prevention is going to make them question that. But according to the speakers today, that’s discrimination and should be changed. FFS, if my husband rang up and pretended he was me, he’d be questioned under fraud prevention too. They are literally being treated the same as everyone else.

My banking app asks you to speak a specific sentence that is then used in future phone calls to check identity. This would work whatever your voice sounded like. Why don’t TWs do this?

bellinisurge · 20/07/2022 16:39

And tell your female child that the fashion industry is a money making load of bollocks and they can wear what the hell they like.

bellinisurge · 20/07/2022 16:40

Telling your child that they must follow gender identity religion to be their true selves is not a kindness

Soontobe60 · 20/07/2022 16:41

mosesb · 20/07/2022 16:24

What are you all so hateful?

My child says they are non binary. I hate that secretly everyone is saying all this horrible stuff about them

What sex is your child?

PearlClutch · 20/07/2022 16:42

mosesb your child is going to meet a lot of people who judge them, I'm afraid. (No matter how they identify).

The women of Mumsnet are actually likely to be the ones standing up for them, fighting to keep them safe, working to ensure that they have access to health services, freedom from violence and abuse, support if they need to escape a difficult relationship, etc.

Most of us are more concerned about protecting your child from risk, danger and poor healthcare than we are about protecting them from opinions.

Yes, we may take the piss out of the concept of 'non-binary'. This is not the same as taking the piss out of your child, whom I wish nothing but the best for. Promise.

bellinisurge · 20/07/2022 16:44

Exactly @PearlClutch . We need to celebrate our tomboy women and girls. Not point them in the direction of a cult.

Did I really get into my car, switch in the radio and catch a caller saying how hard it was to transition because they were now divorced and had to pay “the whole of the internet bill”??

Oh no! Not the whole bill surely? I mean, that's just nasty isn't it. Can't they just apply to that fund, you know, the one where if you want to save up for a private medical procedure you get super duper special half price internet so you don't have to whine on the radio like an entitled knob?

What do you mean, that's not a thing?! Oh well, they could always try growing the fuck up I suppose Grin
