Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

trans supporters and tactics

I was posting on the now deleted thread about trans women who wanted to pee and it made me think about the tactics that are used by trans supporters. The "need to pee" one being obvious. Another used to be "be kind" but I think that is becoming a little outdated now. Ageism is another I've observed - whether it is calling people who support single sex spaces dinosaurs, or just pointing out as was done on the other thread that it tends to be slightly older women who support womens rights. Another is to call people phobic, because we associate the word with homophobic which is obviously abhorrent. Also the mention of DSDs. Any other tactics that I've missed?

It was an odd decision to split the board almost immediately after Maya Forstater's successful EAT ruling and it plausibly interfered with FWR's status as a subaltern counterpublic (as Sarah Pedersen described us).

I've said this before but I'll say it again anyway.
I think MN have done a pretty good tight rope walk between providing a space for these discussions when they weren't allowed elsewhere, and ensuring that their moderation load stay reasonable and they don't find themselves subject to business level disrupting attacks.
Yes, they aren't pleasing everyone, but they have provided a space for information and discussion.
Furthermore having this as a separate board does mean it can act as a clear resource for anyone wanting to learn more, and it means that any other feminism issues people want to raise don't get lost under all the gender issue threads.

I agree that they have probably had a difficult time of it over the last few years, as I'm sure the advertisers were on their case.

However I'm not sure I would use the word 'reasonable' to describe the FWR moderation to be honest, the fact that using 'trans identified male' or 'man who identifies as a woman' gets you deleted is very unreasonable in my view. It means we are forced to lie and use obtuse language that does not serve women well.

TeenDivided · 20/07/2022 15:39

Well Rose I won't necessarily disagree with you there, but I expect the other side aren't happy they aren't meant to use cis (or that this board exists at all). It might not be perfect, but most of the feminist users of FWR seem perfectly able to do the gymnastics required to stay on the right side of the moderators. And tbh the gardening threads are being quietly ignored, and they could decide that they belong on the general gardening board.

Waitwhat23 · 20/07/2022 15:45

A particularly goady poster was constantly using the word cis to refer to other posters on a thread despite many, many requests not to. I reported them (something I very rarely do but it was becoming ridiculous) and was told by MNHQ that they would allow it to stand. That's not an isolated incident.

However, use the acronyms which arenforbidden here and it will be swiftly removed. I saw a post using it removed in 20 seconds once.

Or use the word peak. Or the biscuit emoji (allowable on any other board). Or point out that some posters make goady threads/deliberately for screenshots for Twitter.

Yep, all of the above plus the g word which could also be used in style and beauty. That's verboten too.

applesandpears33 · 20/07/2022 17:09

As an occasional but probably not regular poster I do find it a bit tricky sometimes - I almost feel like I could do with a list of the words or phrases that will trigger a deletion. For example, until recently I had no idea that you couldn't use the word peaked on this section of mumsnet, even though it is a word in common usage and I hear my DC use it all the time in relation to other things. And I'm afraid I don't know what the G word is that we aren't allowed to use. It is very easy to post something that you think is pretty innocent and then to find it has been deleted.

I do wonder if some of the issues are starting to shift a little though. I don't think I've seen any mentions of advertising issues since the stuff to do with cycling that was in the news a few months ago.

Oddly, the dedicated feminists who demanded the New Special Naice Board seem to have vanished like summer dew ...

22 pages of threads on Feminism Chat as opposed to 795 pages of threads on the Sex & Gender Board.

That's because all the threads prior to the split were housed in S&G by default. A few might have been deliberately moved to Feminism Chat but I think they all went to S&G.

As a longterm poster, I did find it quite odd how swiftly and decisively the new board was created to split the discussions - there had been a handful of posters pushing for it because 'they couldn't get anyone chatting about other subjects' despite being asked to create threads for them, and there were plenty of other topics. My argument against the split was that all feminism is to do with Sex & Gender so there's not much point in having an arbitrary split.

As noted above, the people who pushed for the split don't seem to have set the FChat board alight with their burning passions. What has happened is screenshots of the S&G board being circulated on Twitter et al as 'proof' that all MN talk about is Gender stuff.

Ooh, thank you for that! It's been in my pile of books I must read for ages.

Thanks for saying. That’s a result!

Floisme · 20/07/2022 18:54

I have to say I tip my hat to whoever came up with the idea of persuading MNHQ into splitting up the Feminism board and then complaining endlessly that all we ever talk about on Sex and Gender is sex and gender.

Credit where it's due.

Another one is “if trans women are not women then how are black women.”

Oh god yes, unbelievable! Absolutely in-your-face jaw-dropping racism, yet they think it’s a gotcha.

Waitwhat23 · 21/07/2022 11:10

On Twitter it is increasingly genuinely difficult to tell the parody accounts and the ze/zir/trans masc enby/cake gender type accounts apart because the ze/zir/trans masc enby/cake gender accounts are so bat shit that you think that it must be parody. There's an apparently genuine account which is claiming that sexual dimorphism was invented as a social construct in the 16th c....

Jaw dropping is a completely spot on descriptor.

Thelnebriati · 21/07/2022 11:20

Every time women come together or start to make some progress they are disrupted, and the tactics are always the same.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 21/07/2022 11:22

Most of the feminist discussions have moved outside of mumsnet unfortunately.

No they haven't.

Helleofabore · 21/07/2022 11:39

I laughed at that eresh.

Or perhaps that person cannot see the practical feminist discussion happening all over MN. Or that there is a constant trickle of threads on this board that are posted here for traffic because this is the board with the activity.
