And this is exactly why Posie Parker is a liability

Yes, she's charismatic, has style and says things out loud we all wish we'd had the ovaries to say.

But sometimes, the shit she says is fucking dangerous. HOW can she say she's standing for women's rights and then blithely say that our access to abortion is a price worth paying? WTFucking hell?

This isn't about elites, or head girls or any of that shit that Posie chucks at women who disagree with her. We're seeing the biggest pushback on women's rights since before women's lib, we need to build a grass roots movement to fight this, urgently, and Posie's tactics are harming us.

So, this morning someone called Billy Bragg out on his stance on women's rights, and he came back directly with a screenshot of Posie taking shit about Roe vs Wade.

We are NEVER going to convince the left wing that this is an issue they need to get to grips with if the loudest voice they hear on this Posie who's very obviously courting the US religious right, and if every time someone tries to have a conversation with the left about this topic, we're all smeared by association with Posie and whatever shit she's said recently. I know she says she's not a feminist but that detail is lost our detractors. She's a gift to those who want to paint us all as ultra right wing bigots, and this matters.

And this is exactly why Posie Parker is a liability

I think maybe some women have forgotten, or are unaware of the horrors of living in a country without access to abortion and what we stand to lose.

This video is well worth a watch.

These wankers will imply we’re all right wing bigots anyway. Do you want to ban right wing women from agreeing with us, or something? Because every time a right wing person or a person who stood next to a right wing person in a Facebook photo ten years ago agrees with a GC point, the likes of Bragg and his NEET chorus can weaponise it. If you allow him to. Stop playing into his hands.

terryleather · 10/07/2022 13:17

So PP is the leader of and speaks for all women now does she - sorry, I didn't get that memo.

If it wasn't PP it would be someone else not womaning correctly and letting us all down in the process because as everyone knows, one woman "doing it wrong" taints all women - misogyny as old as time.

I don't give a tiny shiny shit what the Left think tbh - they certainly don't give a shit about me or the millions of others who don't care for the genderist pseudo-realities arsewash they've been foisting on the despised lessers for years now with no thought to actual real world consequences for women and children.

If some wish to continue to ballpalm them in the hope of a headpat and cookies then have at it but I don't think I'll bother, thanks.

Pixiedust1234 · 10/07/2022 13:17
  1. I didn't think she was anti trans. More pro women, ie get self id,d men out of womens spaces. This phrasing matters so please use it.
2, what was the rest of her post, it was cut off.
  1. I'm sure there was a third but my womanly brain has fogged. Ill go with since when is posie our leader. I wanna vote for jkr
bellinisurge · 10/07/2022 13:17

Men find it easy to talk about Roe v Wade because it will never affect them and it sounds radical. Much harder to talk about preserving single sex spaces because it means they have to move over and help GNC men feel comfortable. Or pay more taxes to have additional spaces for those that want them. The poor dears are already paying for women's spaces and disabled people's spaces.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 10/07/2022 13:19

Meh. Arguing that having to keep the likes of Billy Bragg onside dictates what women are allowed to speak about is a waste of time. He's dismissed women from the outset of all this so why anyone's giving him headspace (let alone posting frantic posts about what he says) I can't imagine. Confused

achillestoes · 10/07/2022 13:20

Yes, we don’t need Billy Bragg. Bye Billie.

Animalatina · 10/07/2022 13:21

However, I think it's worth considering something else, which is that although it's common for many feminists to see abortion as foundationally related to women's rights, many many women do not think that.

This is so true, Baroness Nicolson who is also GC has sponsored a bill to reduce the legal gestation period for abortion down to 12 weeks.

LondonWolf · 10/07/2022 13:22

MangyInseam · 10/07/2022 13:14

I believe her point is that if you want to talk about women's rights to abortion, you need to have a biological definition of woman.

You actually can't talk about rights attached to sex without a robust legal definition of sex. If women are male or female there are no biological sex based rights.

This is actually basic and I am not sure why people don't get this, Bragg is an idiot and PP is crystal clear about it.

However, I think it's worth considering something else, which is that although it's common for many feminists to see abortion as foundationally related to women's rights, many many women do not think that. And in some cases they believe it undermines women's rights and the way they are treated under the law to claim that it is foundational.

In addition to all of that, RvW, though it's discussed in the UK as if it is about banning or allowing abortion, is actually more complex than that, and so is the recent judgement, in fact it doesn't ban abortion at all and a lot of pro-choice legal scholars believed the original decision was not justifiable legally.

All of this to say that accusations like this against PP seem to rely on the idea that obviously any women who is not seeing abortion as the most important number one issue is bad, and that there is only one view on abortion that it is ok for women to have. Which is bs, and frankly really shallow thinking.

There are far more women who are pushed away from feminism because of the common insistence that they must have this one view of abortion than are pushed away by saying that woman is a biological category of adult human female. Most women believe the latter, many do not believe that abortion should be completely unregulated.

So maybe it's not PP who is the liability here, unless you are saying getting on with certain groups of feminists is more important than reflecting women.

Excellent post.

Floisme · 10/07/2022 13:23

You know what op, your posts remind me of the kinds of things I thought and
said when I first became aware of this issue.

I had always believed the left were my allies and so naturally I thought it was just a matter of finding the right formula of words to convince them I wasn't a bigot.

And then one day, it hit me. There wasn't. I realised these people weren't interested in listening to women and that, however carefully we chose our words and however impeccably we behaved, they would look for a way to smear us.

It was upsetting but also freeing. I recommend it.

Terfydactyl · 10/07/2022 13:23

bellinisurge · 10/07/2022 13:11

Shock horror! Not all women have exactly the same views on every issue nor do they express themselves in the same way! Why didn't anyone tell me?

Awwww c'mon now we six are the hive mind dontcha know.

Well it's a well worn trope that we are Borg.
Not true obviously

TastefulRainbowUnicorn · 10/07/2022 13:23

This is so true, Baroness Nicolson who is also GC has sponsored a bill to reduce the legal gestation period for abortion down to 12 weeks.

🙄 do you (plural, or perhaps just identifying as plural?) think we can’t see you? This is transparent and tedious.

achillestoes · 10/07/2022 13:26

@Floisme

I was upset too, but it’s really obvious, isn’t it? A person (like Lisa Nandy) who will say to a woman’s face “yes, if you are in prison it might be with another woman with a penis and you are a bigot for thinking that’s a problem” has lost their mind. She’s not interested in listening to us.

JoodyBlue · 10/07/2022 13:26

Access to safe abortion if needed is essential. I hate BB's phrasing in the "allowing women to decide if and when to give birth". This is not it at all. Women do not use abortion access as contraception. Most women take this decision very seriously and is why we must listen to women. But it is a serious business, never pleasant or easy or unconsidered. Yet again BB is making it a right v left issue. PP stands and makes it clear that many of her previous natural political allies as someone who cares about people per se, have been damning of her, sneering of her, and painting her in ways that are not fair if you have genuinely followed her journey in speaking for women.

Women's rights and the right to speak for them do not belong to the left wing parties. These things belong to women.

SapphosRock · 10/07/2022 13:26

I agree she's a liability.

She appears very keen to start scraps with TRAs which is entertaining and makes good social media fodder but isn't particularly constructive or helpful.

MerchedBeca · 10/07/2022 13:28

TastefulRainbowUnicorn · 10/07/2022 13:13

Those screenshots have been floating around for a while. I disagree with them.

Posie is harming the fight against self ID itself.

No, she isn’t. Explain the mechanism by which saying a wrong thing on abortion counteracts everything she’s accomplished. Coincidentally or not, your reasoning is at TRA levels.

What has Posie accomplished, exactly?

The changes we're seeing are largely down to women organising, raising awareness is a part of it but also lobbying Parliament and local government, building alliances, fighting battles in court, getting articles in the media, standing up for what they believe in at work, in schools etc. Thousands of women up and down the country.

Posie make a lot of noise, she's great getting seen and raising awareness, sure. But she's not involved in lobbying, nor building alliances and she's making it harder for those who are. This is where a lot of the real work happens. It's not glamorous, it's not newsworthy. We're not changing opinion on this scale because of Posie having picnics! Or even her AHF posters, inspired though they were. They are just one small part of the picture.

Can you point me to a specific campaign Posie has created and "won"?

It's not a competition. Losing access to abortion is also a huge threat to women's rights.

But, my point is that by acting as if abortion isn't an essential women's rights issue, or one that can be traded for fighting self ID, and by courting the religious right in the US, Posie is harming the fight against self ID itself. It's a badly thought out, harmful, counter-productive strategy.

Losing abortion rights is a huge threat to one right - the right to an abortion. Losing the right to be defined as women - adult human female - and allowing self Id is a threat to all women’s rights - including abortion. After all, why would men fight for a right to something they’re never going to need?
Get this one massive thing sorted and the rest will follow far easier. You still haven’t said how you replied to Bragg’s post.

SamphirethePogoingStickerist · 10/07/2022 13:29

MerchedBeca · 10/07/2022 13:00

No, he doesn't. But he has a huge platform - bigger than Posie's. And there will be a lot of people reading that don't know a lot about the debate and aren't entrenched. And they will be reading what he puts out and being swayed by what they read.

If people like Billy Bragg can brush aside feminists who oppose gender ideology so easily, by simply quoting Posie Parker to smear us all, this is a problem, isn't it.

So what you actually meant was Billy is a twat doing what he usually does.

And, separately, Posie may have said something that you disagree with but have only Billy's word for, and a truncated quote!

If I wanted to discredit Posie Parker, I certainly wouldn't be saying this. 🤣

But Posie Parker and those who follow her are making it so much easier for people like him to imply we're all right wing bigots.

Honestly, you know we've reached 'reality departure' to such an extent you can see it from space, when people think FWR are going to be persuaded by what Billy Bragg says about Posie Parker, rather than the other way round. 😁

And for the love of God, try and come up with something more original than bigot when attempting to stop women's rights activists.

And really, Billy Bragg?

TastefulRainbowUnicorn · 10/07/2022 13:33

Just want to point out that it’s usually not people on this side of the debate who can’t defend their statements with their own words and have to resort to “watch this video, it will explain everything.”

(and no, as always, I will not watch the video.)

I'd love to see her accounts. I used to be on her mailing list. It's pretty much ALL sales stuff, very little actual campaigning on women's rights.
