gender woo and voting

Is party stance on gender woo a deal breaker for you? I am/have been a center left type my whole life, would never previously have even considered voting tory-but I cannot vote for parties that spout manifest bollocks. How about you? Or you friends?

Same.
Friends, I don’t know. Some are so wedded to the idea that the Labour Party are always the good side, that they would vote for them if they had a Gorilla up for PM.

bellinisurge · 11/07/2022 11:01

If you either lie or fudge on something as simple as "what is a man?" "what is a woman?", what else are you going to lie about. What else are you too scared to be honest about? What other lobbyists are you too afraid to stand up to?.
Simple, really .

Things will change and humans will adapt. It'll take the best part of another century for things to reach a crisis. So in the meantime raise your children to be dentists and doctors and IT specialists and skilled construction workers and encourage them to emigrate to New Zealand, which may be one of the least-affected areas of the world.

Are you for real?

I am for real and I've worked for the last 18 years in the green/ renewables sector and am very much aware of climate change. I'm part of the sector that has been trying to change things. I live in a heavily insulated eco house and we've had PV, batteries, solar thermal and a heat pump for 15 years. For years I lived a low-carbon lifestyle while I watched everyone around me who said they were concerned about the climate continue to fly several times a year, buy larger and larger vehicles, live with the thermostat at 23 degrees... Most people aren't going to change until there's no alternative.

I don't have children but if I did I'd be looking two or three generations ahead and planning to encourage them to emigrate to the parts of the world least likely to be badly affected. Why do you think so many billionaires have bought properties in New Zealand?

TooBigForMyBoots had said
(quoting from what I had said that Labour, Lib Dems and Greens had behaved appallingly to dissenting voices):

The Conservatives have *behaved appallingly to dissenting voices.

Any more appallingly than Labour has behaved towards Rosie Duffield and Luciana Berger? Labour's banned Filia, LGB Alliance and Labour Women's Declaration from having stalls at the conference. And that's all I can think of in the two minutes I have to post here. Other examples will occur as soon as I post.

Yes. So I wondered if TooBig was referring to other issues altogether, rather than “Gender Woo”?

I apologise for the derail, but that is seriously interesting. I think you should start a guidance thread about this, especially to start with ideas for what to do if you don’t have much money. Where to begin etc.

Pluvia I’d be interested too as I think about future generations and have two passports (Aus and U.K.) and think both will have issues but not sure which has more

It's true that Johnson removed the whip from some remainer MPs. Generally though they are better at allowing free speech than the other parties and definitely so on gender issues.

All of Australia will presumably need to decamp to cooler NZ at some point?

I charge £50 an hour (minimum) for advice. Sorry to be blunt, but I've worked in this field and demonstrated my commitment by building my own home and living a low-carbon lifestyle over 18 years. I have a string of paid-for qualifications. Practically every new person I meet wants hours of detailed advice once they know what I do — and then most go off and spend the money they could have invested making their homes future-proof on a motorhome or a second home (which they then ask for my advice on). There's advice all over the net for anyone who cares to look. End of derail, please.

Or live in a small Island nation or country prone to drought related famine.

I want to vote for Rosie Duffield, but I know Labour don't support her view. I am torn, but have to go with the party who know what a woman is...

I don't know Oz, but judging from all the flooding/ drought issues I'd have thought Tasmania or New Zealand might be a better bet than some parts of Australia. No one knows what's going to happen as global warming progresses, there are so many different and intersecting elements at play. That's why some of the super-rich are hedging their bets and inadvertently creating a massive property boom in NZ.

"In the meantime, I'd like to make sure that while we wait for climate armageddon, women still have the right to use single-sex loos and to meet in single-sex groups."

it's increasingly hard to tell what's satire and who is being serious

GCautist · 11/07/2022 17:43

I will never vote the tories. The fact that more tories don’t buy into the gender woo than other parties doesn’t really reassure me. I’ll vote based on other issues because there are so many other injustices too.

I'd vote for Rosie.

I think its actually really important to show that Labour GC MP's will not suffer a loss of votes (or preferably increased votes compared to their TRA peers).

If you don't vote for her you play into the narrative that Labour "can't" revise their stance on this issue.

I'd strongly urge anyone in her constituency whose is GC to give her your vote regardless of your politics.

This would be especially true if the other candidate did not respect sex-based rights.

Traditionally, if you’re trying to heavily exploit female socialisation by “guilting” women into voting the way you want them to — it normally helps to not go about the place calling them “fascists” beforehand. Just a tip 👍

Interestquestion · 11/07/2022 19:30

Have not RTFT but as a floating voter who views herself as centrist, and in a perfect world centre left I used to be dismayed by the American way of one issue voting. I thought it was a red neck ignorant approach. I could conceivably vote Starmer if he recanted (as it were). If they all acknowledged women’s rights. But if I visualise it, I know they KNOW what a woman is, but I’d feel suspicious they were just saying it to win votes.

in the last election, I voted conservative as Corbyn was too far to the left and ambiguous in various issues. I also voted remain in the Brexit referendum but I was shocked and frustrated by the persistent stalemate in Parliament: the referendum was definitive. There was a vote and in the interests of democracy the result had to be acted on. Even if the losing vote (me btw) can scream (not me) that the other side are such dunces they don’t deserve to have an opinion.

the tories know what a woman is and they’ll say so. As a woman I feel really really passionately about this. I understand that the economy is screwed and we’lre all in for a tough time, some tougher than others. But economies come right, stock markets rise, oil values rise - women’s rights have always been stamped into the mud given half a chance. I want nothing in law that can’t be reversed. I didn’t vote Tory because I thought Johnson had the morals of an Archbishop. But when he expressed himself eleoquently on the hoof and knew the difference between sex and gender, gillick competency and otherwise and what’s necessary to make single sex sport fair, I think he opened a door that only a PM can open. It meant other people could say it openly. So I am open to any centrist that knows what a woman is basically.

achillestoes · 11/07/2022 19:35

@antifascist

Stop telling us to vote for what everyone else needs. Ask yourself why we can’t have our needs met, because they aren’t extravagant.

"heavily exploit female socialisation by “guilting” women into voting the way you want them to"

also known as pointing out policies.

Still the millions of girls who depend on free school meals are unlikely to ever ever afford to enter a public space- so they are useless for your culture wars agains scary trans people
