Amy Hamm - Canadian Nurse being disciplined for being GC

I've not seen a thread on Amy on MN and the search didn't show up anything. She seems to be being put through the wringer by tras and by her nursing college.

I thought if she saw this thread it might be cheering Flowers, she's on twitter. I found her thanks to Bette.

Are they on extended break? Had to shift to my phone to take DD to brownies and then hang out in the car for an hour

Mmmnotsure · 07/11/2023 18:39

Panel: Are you a terf?

AH: Says she does use it to claim it - mentions the terfisaslur website. 'First it's trans exclusionary which I am not and it's radical feminist which I am not.'

toomanytrees · 07/11/2023 18:49

The panel's questions are around whether she identified herself as a nurse on twitter and various publications. To me this implies they think her beliefs are unacceptable. This is alarming, not just for Amy, but for all of us.

Mmmnotsure · 07/11/2023 18:50

AH: I have never spoken about my political beliefs at work.
Makes comparison with working with nurses who may be pro choice or pro life. You're there as a professional and you leave your political beliefs at the door when you step in.

[Is this the opposite of bring your whole self to work?]

AH: Re trans - I respectfully decline to engage in this subject when I am at work.

Thanks for the access code. Good to see that BF has the blue hair that the TRA uniform requires. AH is very impressive, not rolling her eyes at all.

stealtheatingtunnocks · 07/11/2023 18:59

KS on after 15 min break.

well done, Amy. We are cheering you on from terf island.

chilling19 · 07/11/2023 19:00

And breathe Amy 👏👏👏

Mmmnotsure · 07/11/2023 19:05

Amy reminds me of Helen Joyce in that her answers are so very clear and she is quick-thinking enough to bring in so many points that need making.

It's unlikely that someone advocating for males to have access to women's spaces or someone engaged in this debate on the other side would need to take the same precaution of keeping their profession out of their twitter bio. There really is a double standard going on here.

Thank you so much for this thread and the comments.

chilling19 · 07/11/2023 19:18

Here is our Kathleen!

Mmmnotsure · 07/11/2023 19:20

LB: You are here to help the panel and not as an advocate for AH.

Link is here to listen. No ability to let them know that we're all groaning and cursing the little toad that is Barbara Findlay

Re the [nicely observed] toad. BF looks, now that Kathleen Stock has appeared, as though BF has swallowed a particularly rotten fly.

Signalbox · 07/11/2023 19:26

I think KS nearly laughed when LB asked about "feelings" and "knowings" about gender identity.

AutumnCrow · 07/11/2023 19:27

I appreciate all the commentary on the hearing from you all. It makes the world seem fuller and brighter somehow to know that others are observing and participating.

Mmmnotsure · 07/11/2023 19:28

KS: Dr Bauer's is an activist understanding of GI. Once you have a feeling it's not a feeling that might be wrong, it's that you know, and only you can know according to this activist view ...I think it's a misunderstanding of what the word 'knowing' means. It's not observation or evidence. There's no methodology here - it's just 'I know'. You may feel it strongly but that's different from knowing it.

Who is the slow talking man?

Signalbox · 07/11/2023 19:29

Does MS he/him objecting at this point mean that it's going to be him cross examining KS? I really wanted it to be bf!

Who is the slow talking man?

Lawyer for the Nursing Council.

Mmmnotsure · 07/11/2023 19:35

Michael Seaborn is objecting. Says that panel has decided what KS can and cannot testify about. We are straying past the boundaries of KS's report. Can't ask about the statements of AH.

LB's answer. In law, an expert isn't limited to precise contents of their report. I'm following the panel's decisions re what KS is allowed to comment on. Trying to define the concepts being discussed, starting with what is GI and the language used around it. Panel said KS could speak to the risks of defining transphobia too broadly. MS is wrong in his objection.

Panel go off to have coffee, smell the roses, and discuss the objection.

pickledandpuzzled · 07/11/2023 19:38

Polite little place mark. I’m bookmarking and watching, but a comment works better.

CyberCritical · 07/11/2023 19:43

The irony and utterly disgustingly depressing fact that a man would be tried for and found innocent of rape with more evidence against them and less questioning or length of trial than this ludicrous farce is really making me dislike the world at the moment.

Mmmnotsure · 07/11/2023 19:46

Panel - KS can't analyse AH's statement, just talk about language generally

Mmmnotsure · 07/11/2023 19:51

LB: what is sex by your definition

KS: the one that is standard by biology, distinguishing two types in a species pertaining to their role in reproduction.

[KS's feed is rubbish now, and she sounds like a dalek]

Mmmnotsure · 07/11/2023 19:54

KS: in certain contexts it's claimed that the former understanding of biological sex is old fashioned and it should be thought of as a spectrum. Or it's claimed that sex is socially constructed by humans rather than as found in nature. Those are quite radical views from a philosophical ?section in academia. I think they are completely wrong.
