I've not seen a thread on Amy on MN and the search didn't show up anything. She seems to be being put through the wringer by tras and by her nursing college.

I thought if she saw this thread it might be cheering Flowers, she's on twitter. I found her thanks to Bette.

In defence of the phrasing, usually the "identifying yourself as" phrase is used because you tell people you are a nurse/doctor whatever, and people give more weight to your statements as a result. It's the difference between saying "that's a spider bite, go to A&E" and "that's a spider bite, go to A&E and I'm a nurse". In the second statement the person has identified themselves to their hearer as a nurse.

Professionals with particular qualifications like lawyers, doctors, nurses etc have a higher standard applied to what they say when they also state their qualifications, aka identifying themselves as that particular qualified role.

A tweet from the live tweeting from @goinglikeelsie who also did the Yaniv court cases, gives a flavour of what Amy is up against:

https://twitter.com/goinglikeelsie/status/1572666165994074113?s=46&t=1wZ-I24n0SZAFaTFtsQB7g

Chair asks lawyers to introduce themselves and invites them to share their pronouns.

For the College:

Michael Seaborn, He/Him
Brent Olthuis, He/Him
barbara findlay She/Her

bf also identifies that she uses lowercase letters

Omg that's not good if the Chair is a pronoun person. I do some work for one of the healthcare regulators in the UK and I have never heard anyone announce pronouns or be invited to announce pronouns in a hearing before. I wonder if that's standard practice in Canada or if it depends on the Chair's own beliefs.

What is that all about? Is it another identity thing or cultural.
I've never seen it before.

RhannionKPSS · 22/09/2022 13:46

Good luck Amy 💪💚🤍💜

I think it's a Canadian thing, there was something about the law being that refusing to use someone's preferred pronouns is an actual hate crime.

They are knee deep in it. Particularly some of the soft comments from Canadian parents I've seen around the infamous shop teacher.

bell hooks is the most famous example of using only lower-case letters. I don't know the rationale behind it

Igmum · 22/09/2022 15:09

Good luck Amy. Here's hoping that the judge is sane and just being polite. Some of us would actively prefer medical professionals who believe in biology.

(And yes MoltenLasagna, a Cake and Gin fund would be a fine idea Grin.)

NitroNine · 22/09/2022 15:35

Are the Canadians going to have to tell us what the third sex is then? If the legal argument is being made that it is discriminatory to state there are only two sexes, for a judge to make a ruling that is indeed the case, surely evidence of the existence of more than two sexes must be brought? I am agog.

Also, in all seriousness, while the UK isn’t exactly paradise, if Amy’s case fails, if you look at the grounds for seeking asylum in the UK, I think she might qualify. The Forstater Ruling protecting gender critical views in the same way as religious beliefs seems absurd on the one hand; but if, on the other, it were to allow people from Canada to seek asylum here (as a last resort!) it might wake more people up.

(And yes, we should, as a priority, be establishing safe routes for asylum seekers from several other countries; the UK government has behaved abominably; the country is neither full nor a preferred destination for asylum seekers; but due to my neither being in government nor having magic powers - & thus being unable to effect policy change of any kind - I have posited the above. Just in case anyone was itching to have a wokescold about the audacity of daring suggest that someone with the right to seek asylum should they wish do so because they’re not The Right Type Of Asylum Seeker.

My use of the conditional with regards to asylum grounds & Canadians who don’t believe in gender was because there’s no precedent. And things get Political. Canadians are of course also more likely than most asylum seekers to be able to move here to work - 1 in 10 nursing roles in NHS England are currently unfilled, apparently, so…)

Perhaps she is a fan of e e cummings.

But I doubt it somehow.

Tallisker · 22/09/2022 19:25

Is k d lang canadian?

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 22/09/2022 19:29

i've applied to have access to view the hearing

as a pp says, having a bunch of international watchers may concentrate people's minds

a number of journalists logged into the LGBA one. How excellent would it be if some logged into this one?

MoistBandana · 22/09/2022 19:32

Amy has the Bestestest glasses on Twitter. I'm very jealous.
Hope she's doing well and sense prevails.

except in her pronouns apparently - beautifully capitalised.

It is all so delightfully 16th century. The century's version of Do you or do you not accept the Real Presence in the Eucharist?" The human race - nothing new under the sun. I suppose at least they aren't actually beheading/hanging/burning ... so far

No beheadings or hangings. Just banning people from social media platforms, removing them from their jobs, shouting at them in the street. Difficult to believe we live in a so-called democracy.

But yes, your analogy is dead on.

well done to Amy for her well written statement concerning the consent agreement.
on totally different matter i was forced to sign one. i was a proud nurse for 30+ years and paid my dues to what was once the bcna...now with more letters of the alphabet added in and more each year.

MangyInseam · 05/07/2022 14:12

None of this is in the news here in Canada, which is typical.

RIGHT???

I try to listen to The Feminist Current podcast every now and then. No one seems to be writing about this on the CBC, in the Globe…

IcakethereforeIam · 23/09/2022 10:20

I just googled 'Amy Hamm', this thread was the sixth result. The lack of media interest, especially in Canada, is staggering. The statement supporting Amy is very good. Apparently, Doc Stock is a witness for her!

When men use use uppercase for their pronouns it's like being back in Sunday School; I'm sure they identify as Gods.

Misstache · 23/09/2022 16:04

I was looking up why bell hooks didn’t capitalize her name, because I couldn’t remember what her reasoning was, and I thought this was interesting. Note how she made a choice about how she wanted to represent her name but didn’t police people getting it wrong. She certainly didn’t shake and scream and cry and become suicidal if someone miscapitaled her.

You mean she didn't call for capital punishment?
