Common sense.

Good. And they'll provide an open category for those who have transitioned. That's a win-win isn't it? There'll be an elite open category for Lia et al. So no one is discriminated against. I'm pretty sure there'll be enough companies out there who'll be falling over themselves to sponsor an elite trans athlete who competes in the open category. So lia's career can continue. Fab news all round.

I should imagine Thomas will be competing in a 1 horse race😳

The usual suspects are having a full on meltdown on Twitter.

The Budapest location for the meeting is causing conniptions - it seems to have escaped them that the FINA World Champs has started and that’s why all the FINA country reps are there.

dropthevipers · 19/06/2022 18:12

Sharron Davies on radio 5 live just now giving no fucks whatsoever (politely)

The toddler tantrums will be epic. Trans extremists rarely have anyone saying no to them. They won't have read the policy and they are not interested in women's swimming or sport - merely the opportunities that it offers to them for self promotion.

DodoPatrol · 19/06/2022 18:12

Maybe, maybe not, Soontobe60. There might be loads of transgender swimmers who were trying to decide whether to compete in the women’s category but felt it to be physically unfair to do so.

I bet they are, any highlights?

Although this is a huge step in the right direction-why don't they take this full circle and say no one born male can compete in the category of women?
If pushy parents have an effeminate son, who is a great but not the best swimmer-what's to stop them transitioning him at age 11, so s/he can then compete and most likely win against girls that age.

One would hope that common sense would prevail! There’re a lot of experts out there who are now pointing out that suppressing puberty is downright dangerous. A male would have to be on PBS from an extremely young age in order to ensure he doesn’t go through male puberty at all. As a teacher, I know most 11 year old boys would certainly be too immature physically to go on to compete against girls who go through their puberty without the benefit of their own T boost.

You’re far more generous in thought that I am. IMO, and in face of the evidence currently out there, TW athletes who so far have attempted to compete in the womens categories of their sport have been men who once were elite, then lost their form in some way and coincidentally chose to transition at the same time as they tried to enter the women’s competitions.

RubyTrees · 19/06/2022 18:18

However, 'Athlete Ally' - an LGBT advocacy group which organised a letter of support for transgender American swimmer Lia Thomas in February, called the new policy "discriminatory, harmful, unscientific and not in line with the 2021 IOC principles".

"If we truly want to protect women's sports, we must include all women, we must include all women."

Unscientific - hilarious!

bloodyunicorns · 19/06/2022 18:18

Good.

But I hope their saying that 'transition must be completed by the age of 12' doesn't push parents with kids who think they're trans into taking blockers and having surgery before the age of 12...

PermanentTemporary · 19/06/2022 18:19

Absolutely fantastic. Hope other sports follow.

puffyisgood · 19/06/2022 18:20

MrsOvertonsWindow · 19/06/2022 18:02

My take is that it's a complete fantasy. No child who transitions before puberty will ever be able to compete in elite sport - their bodies will be totally compromised and they'll be on a lifetime regime of drugs and surgery - completely incompatible with elite sport.
It seems to be there as a token gesture?

yeah, I think 'be kind' probably does kick in for those poor wretches, their male advantages will be very modest and I should think they'll have much bigger things to worry about than any sporting career

bloodyunicorns · 19/06/2022 18:20

But a blanket ban would be best. If a born male competes against women, they're still taking a race spot from a woman, and perennially a winning place.

I worried about increased child abuse by pushy parents when i read that too.

and an open category! It is like they have read all the sensible suggestions on mumsnet.

are the white mediocre men frothing already?

Bollindger · 19/06/2022 18:20

I heard a statement the other day.
Why should we ask women have to agree to a lie, that is not biologically untrue?
Every cell of a person is either male or female, you can't swap,

dudsville · 19/06/2022 18:21

This is wonderful. It's realy given me a boost to my day.

Beingadiv · 19/06/2022 18:24

Great news and a total win/win with the open category. It would be great to see this apply to non elite levels too and other sports. The organisation opposing this have no argument other than 'transwomen should be included because that's what they want. End of'. I'm glad that has been dealt with fairly and meticulously.

Along the lines of “decisions made by out of touch white male baby boomers” and “disgusting transphobia, you’re going to get your asses sued off”.

Seems to have bypassed them that transwomen can still compete - just not in the protected female category.

Lots of focus on the Tanner Stage 2 / Age 12 requirement as the definition of male puberty (given that it’s unlikely in the UK that puberty blockers would be available at this stage / age).

Dreikanter · 19/06/2022 18:30

On another note, the policy confirms that transmen can compete in the male category, subject to a TUE and a safety waiver form for water polo and high diving, and that transwomen are welcome to compete in the male category.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 19/06/2022 18:32

According to the Times, delegates were told by experts that in swimming by the age of 14, the best boys in the world are already racing faster than female World-record pace. The American 13-14 boys age group records in the 50, 100, 200m freestyle are all faster than the Women’s world record in those events

VestofAbsurdity · 19/06/2022 18:36

Along the lines of “decisions made by out of touch white male baby boomers” and “disgusting transphobia, you’re going to get your asses sued off”.

And yet transgender people were included on the Athletes Committee that fed into the report and, surprisingly, they did not agree with the bods of Athlete Ally.

samsalmon · 19/06/2022 18:38

It’s been said on here previously that Lia Thomas was actually doing everyone a favour by shining a light, well we have Lia to thank in a way by exemplifying the issues so beautifully….even down to the fact that Lia’s performance was at times clearly sub optimal, in what could be seen as an attempt not to wipe the floor with the female opponents.
