Common sense.

Is Lia finished? Do college events count as “elite” events.

I find it hard to see how college events could be taken seriously unless they follow athletic rules.

WarriorN · 19/06/2022 17:44

To be honest, I doubt team mates will take lia seriously.

Amusingly it was DH who told me this!

Same! I boycott the beeb but he likes their website Smile

Do trans men have to go into the Open category? If so, they'll have no chance against the trans women. But presumably the TRAs cannot argue that ...

finally, an organisation with a backbone. I wonder if the fact it went to a vote by member countries rather being entirely decided behind closed doors by a limited number of interested parties affected the decision made.

LaSavoie · 19/06/2022 17:56

Well thank fuck for that

MiniatureHotdog · 19/06/2022 17:56

Common sense! Well done Gina. Hopefully all other sports will now follow suit 👏

No - the policy (which is really worth reading) states that trans men are welcome to compete in women's swimming subject to specific drug requirements. I have no idea how significant the requirements are in easing out any advantages that transitioning may give a woman over other women.

Glad they have done this. DS was a national level swimmer and even at this level the biological differences between m/f post-pubescent swimmers is huge. I’m pleased that the women he swam with will have their competitions protected.

Hopefully that's the case Vest but a blanket ban at all levels would be best. When I competed I knew I was never going to the elite levels but I enjoyed my level. And the competition still needed to be fair.

Do FINA have authority over lower level competitions?

GrimDamnFanjo · 19/06/2022 17:59

I'm just left a little uneasy at the part which mentions transition treatment beginning before age 12?

Think you're right. This was open and above board with the self interested not being allowed to dominate. Unlike the IOC with the self invested Joanna Harper who was allowed to use minimal inadequate research involving her mates to sell the idea of born males in women's sport.

Madcats · 19/06/2022 18:01

The thing about swimming is that most people in the infrastructure have either been swimmers or swim parents themselves (so have had many hours poolside either watching/volunteering/competing).

Finally some common sense. GB swimming will be fine with this.

Well done Sharon Davies and others.

I think it's so they can't say never ever. But realistically any boy who doesn't go through puberty isn't going to be able to compete in elected competition against girls.

My take is that it's a complete fantasy. No child who transitions before puberty will ever be able to compete in elite sport - their bodies will be totally compromised and they'll be on a lifetime regime of drugs and surgery - completely incompatible with elite sport.
It seems to be there as a token gesture?

Clymene · 19/06/2022 18:02

Elite. Girls/women who are going through/have gone through puberty

KangarooKenny · 19/06/2022 18:03

Good. Hopefully they will do this with toilets and changing rooms too.

SuspiciousDuck · 19/06/2022 18:04

Stunning and brave.

BruceAndNosh · 19/06/2022 18:05

Yes!
And yes to creating an Open category too so that those genuine transgender athletes (as opposed to those men who can't beat other men so decide to compete against women) can compete fairly as well

FOJN · 19/06/2022 18:05

It says transition must be completed by the age of 12. Let's hope there is no one out there prepared to administer opposite sex hormones and perform surgery on anyone so young.

happydappy2 · 19/06/2022 18:06

Although this is a huge step in the right direction-why don't they take this full circle and say no one born male can compete in the category of women?
If pushy parents have an effeminate son, who is a great but not the best swimmer-what's to stop them transitioning him at age 11, so s/he can then compete and most likely win against girls that age.

Supersee · 19/06/2022 18:07

Bravo! Unbelievable that it's even up for debate. 46 against is still pretty worrying.

Really hope all other sports follows suit. Happy for everyone, women and transwomen, all get to complete at elite.level, but fairly
