Common sense.

And yet transgender people were included on the Athletes Committee that fed into the report and, surprisingly, they did not agree with the bods of Athlete Ally.

It was the majority of the Athlete Group
that agreed with protecting the female category. You can probably speculate on who made up the minority view.

hattie43 · 19/06/2022 18:43

Good the right decision

Luredbyapomegranate · 19/06/2022 18:47

Thank goodness for that.

And there are actually a fair few in the trans scientific community who would say so.

Iamnotamermaid · 19/06/2022 18:47

Excellent news from FINA and it sounds like a step in the right direction. Lia Thomas's statement of 'Let trans kids play' on an arm when competing sums up everything that was wrong with the situation. They are competing, not playing and competition needs to be fair.

OvaHere · 19/06/2022 18:48

Thank fuck for that. I wasn't at all sure common sense would prevail.

TotalRhubarb · 19/06/2022 18:49

Lordy, some actual common sense!

Great news! Well done FINA for using your brains and backbones.

Major thank-you to Sharron Davies and all the other women who were brave enough to raise their heads above the parapet on this.

AnyFucker · 19/06/2022 18:50

Fantastico

GCRich · 19/06/2022 18:51

Wow, this is big.

Out of interest I went onto honesttransgender on reddit (batshit crazy subreddit, but much less batshit than most) and there was a thread "FINA bans trans women from women's swimming tw: facts". All it said was "And how is that a bad thing exactly?... Oh yeah, it isn't. It's literally there to be fair and keep opportunities for cis women." Most responses were to be expected but a significant number of posts are in support.

If trans subreddits can be a little bit supportive then anything is possible!

According to the Times, delegates were told by experts that in swimming by the age of 14, the best boys in the world are already racing faster than female World-record pace. The American 13-14 boys age group records in the 50, 100, 200m freestyle are all faster than the Women’s world record in those events

Good website that tracks high school boys scores v women Olympians/ competitive athletes.

‘If trans subreddits can be a little bit supportive then anything is possible!’

Credit where it’s due - lots of trans people can see how much damage literalism has done to the level of their acceptance in society.

WarriorN · 19/06/2022 18:55

Youngest boy I've seen there winning gold over an adult woman was 14.

WarriorN · 19/06/2022 18:58

Eg, top woman's time was a new world record.

Hurrah! This is justice, fairness, and inclusion.

It’s been said on here previously that Lia Thomas was actually doing everyone a favour by shining a light, well we have Lia to thank in a way by exemplifying the issues so beautifully….even down to the fact that Lia’s performance was at times clearly sub optimal, in what could be seen as an attempt not to wipe the floor with the female opponents.

If he came out and said it was all to make the point then I wouldn't believe him.

If he produced evidence from years back that this was his plan all along, he was never trans and he'd taken hormones as a self-sacrifice for women rights then I think he'd have to go down as a legend!

reddit is not the best place to go looking for those people!

Fair point Dreikanter, however, they cannot argue they weren't included.

southbiscay · 19/06/2022 19:08

This is fantastic. The published document and policy was brilliantly and carefully written and should serve as a template for other, more timid, sporting organisations.

I'm not too worried about the tanner stage 2 stuff - the way I read it is that a boy would have to be on puberty blockers by tanner stage 2 or age 12 at the latest and then constantly keep T suppressed. There is no requirement for surgery.

Given the light that is being shone on puberty blockers and the Dutch protocol generally one would hope that this practice ceases anyway.

Sharron Davies was brilliant on 5 live sport (piece starts at 36 mins in).

SobranieCocktail · 19/06/2022 19:09

Haven't read the full thread, but what does "completed transition" by age 12 actually mean? And is there a possibility this is going to mean people (parents) push for earlier medical interventions on gender non conforming children?

dropthevipers · 19/06/2022 19:12

Just been racking my brains-is this in fact the first time the tin foil hat gang have been told to fuck off, no you cannot have what you want?

My take on it is that it clearly defines when the onset of male puberty occurs and what would need to be shown as evidence of no male puberty advantages.

I think it is. It's not an absolute No, but pretty close.

Expect lots of toys thrown out of the pram!!

Wow, this is absolutely huge isn't it?

I think (am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong) that World Rugby said an outright NO a while ago.

VestofAbsurdity · 19/06/2022 19:41

I think (am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong) that World Rugby said an outright NO a while ago.

I think they did but then England Rugby decided that was transphobic and ignored all the potential threats to women and caved in to the trans extremists. I have heard that there are a small number of transwomen playing in women's rugby (not at elite level) with a number of young women wondering if they dare to complain before a woman gets killed or seriously injured.

TheBiologyStupid · 19/06/2022 19:45

Yes, you're right Vest, World Rugby was first (although the risks of injury were higher and more obvious).
