"Trans activists have hounded Nadhim Zahawi off a Russell Group campus, accusing him of “inciting hatred” by defining women as “adult human females”, The Telegraph can reveal.

The Education Secretary was met with dozens of student protesters chanting “Zahawi is a transphobe” and “Tory scum” while visiting the University of Warwick on Friday.

The Cabinet minister had to be ushered away from campus by security guards in dramatic scenes, as he was pursued by activists brandishing trans flags and placards."

Are the words adult human male ever used?

A Department for Education source said: "This proves the need for the Freedom of Speech Bill and is more evidence against those who say there is no such thing as a chilling culture on campus."

Well at least someone at the DfE has noticed.

That’s excellent. Hoisted by their own petard, hopefully.

Warwick joins Bristol as a place my DC won’t be applying to.

GoodThinkingMax · 31/05/2022 11:05

But then I don't imagine the young women at the centre of the rape chat scandal felt safe. Warwick has form for failing to protect students from other students.

well quite.

Andante57 · 31/05/2022 11:33

One of the protesters was Joel Cooper, son of Ed Balls and Yvette Cooper. Maybe fear of being cancelled by her son is why Yvette refuses to define a woman.

On the subject of 'transphobic dogwhistles', on the Jeremy Vine show a while ago, there was a non binary woman who compared using 'adult human female' to racist football supporters throwing a banana onto a football pitch, ie, saying that although there's nothing inherently racist about a banana per se, the intent is clear.

Bit of a stretch....

It's changed it's meaning in such a way that it can be used to characterize any statement someone doesn't like as a covert racist plot.

TWAW would totally fit by that thinking, it's a phrase that is meant to lead in a particular direction intellectually, and it's also recognized by supporters of the view as a standard kind of trope.

But actually, both statements are pretty up front about what they mean, they make an argument of sorts, which some people will agree with and others not. It's potentially possible to convince someone of your view on that matter.

Artichokeleaves · 31/05/2022 11:46

'Transphobic dog whistle' has just become nothing more than a lazy attempt to silence someone from voicing something the lobby doesn't want to hear or have to address. It's just another version of 'no debate'.

Considering transphobic now means nothing more than 'not in enthusiastic agreement with me' it's pretty much no longer worth worrying about, or accepting as meaning 'you have hit my boundary on acceptability'.

When a boundary is just 'do exactly what I say or else' without any respect for anyone else's boundary, it's cutted up pear pretending to be a boundary. And needs handling in much the same way.

I remember getting a masterclass in calm reasonable debate at the tender age of 7 whilst staying with my very very religious protestant, on every church committee, granny

I assume it was an act of rebellion by my mother, mind you, to get me christened Roman Catholic, at least the other granny was happy with that!

Anyway one afternoon just after lunch the doorbell rang and there stood two young American gentlemen with a religious book in their hand and matching name tags. Of course granny being granny, every moment is a teaching moment, invited the gentlemen in. It was dark when they left.

There had been no raised voices, no accusations of one or the other being wrong. Just many many hours of interesting debate and an exchanging of informational leaflets.

Now whilst I don't think granny learnt much that day, after all she could already suck eggs! those two young gentleman did. And I having no skin in the game religion wise learnt a really good lesson in taking the time to listen to the other side opinion.

On the other hand a trip to Tesco with my mother once resulted in the shop assistant in the fruit aisle screaming at my mother because my mother had asked her very politely why the apples were from South Africa? And did they have any from somewhere else as many mother refused to buy them on principle.

A ten minute rant from the assistant ensued with her calling my mother all sorts of things whilst my mother tried to calmly explain the situation as to why she didn't wish to purchase South African apples. Eventually the shop manager arrived and dragged the screaming banshee away!

Two occasions, two differing sets of opinions. Two completely different reactions. Both educational in in very different ways! I know which I preferred though!

Some people have the inteligence and capacity for listening to and acknowledging another perspective (even if they disagree with it), some people don't - they are bloody hard work!

God aren't they just. Lately this whole thing had been like reliving the South African apples debacle on loop!

TullyApplebottom · 31/05/2022 12:27

The solution to this is simple. The parents of these over privileged little no marks need to tell them that if that’s how they want to behave at university they can do it on someone else’s dollar.
lets see how they feel about their principles when bank of mum and dad withdraws credit

Well quite!

If they were having to work as many hours as possible at the local petrol station in order to survive through uni I don't think they'd have the time for doing this shit!

I think I want a T-shirt with 'Transphobic Dog Whistler' on it.

I thought their son was called Joe Balls.

Apparently one of the students is the son of Ed Balls and Yvette Cooper @SpindleSheWrote order-order.com/2022/05/31/exclusive-yvette-coopers-son-led-trans-rights-disruption-of-zahawi-qa/ Talk about a privileged background. And may explain Yvette Cooper, who I thought would have more sense, being so wet on this.

Too many parents are letting their teenagers and 20-somethings do the parenting by setting the values and acceptable topics to their own angst -ridden peer-group low standards. More parents need to stand up their kids - I don't mean insist the kids have the same views (futile) but that the kids don't get to moderate the parents' views - especially at work ffs. What is Cooper playing at!

Nadhim Zahawi has very gentlemanly tried to deflect the critics away from his colleague's son twitter.com/nadhimzahawi/status/1531590554441621506 which is a greater courtesy than the mob gives to anyone else.

Was the Balls-Cooper student one of the ones banging on the doors and being disruptive? Or did he lose control of his own protest?

Andante57 · 31/05/2022 13:52

I read it on Guido Fawkes.

‘A video posted by the Warwick Labour society shows Cooper interrupting the question session while another student interrupts him to point out the son of New Labour’s power couple was blacklisted from the event, as organisers believed he and the Labour society were planning to disrupt it. After concluding his monologue he sat down to applause from fellow Labour activist gatecrashers.’

Tanith · 31/05/2022 14:05

Wikipaedia lists three children for Yvette Cooper and Ed Balls. None of them is called Joel Cooper.

Andante57 · 31/05/2022 14:14

In that case Guido Fawkes has got it wrong - my apologies. Hopefully a correction will be forthcoming.

ResisterRex · 31/05/2022 14:16

On Wiki:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ed_Balls

There's this:

web.archive.org/web/20120223013401/www.telegraph.co.uk/news/1338650/Health-minister-celebrates-birth.html

"Ms Cooper is married to Ed Balls, chief economic adviser to the Treasury. The couple, who have called the baby Joel, already have a two-year-old daughter"

MagnoliaTaint · 31/05/2022 14:20

Definitely son of Ed Balls and Yvette Cooper.

Posh white kids trying to silence a man who came here as a refugee and having been very successful, builds a political career.
tells us everything about todays left, eh

Tanith · 31/05/2022 14:38

Very odd!
Now Nadhim Zahawi has tweeted to say "This student was very polite to me."
twitter.com/nadhimzahawi/status/1531590554441621506

So I'm not sure if he is Yvette Cooper and Ed Balls' son, but I am pretty sure it's Guido Fawkes stirring again.

MagnoliaTaint · 31/05/2022 14:39

What, the oppressed minority of rich white men? We see that quite a lot.
