Oh dear, that ROF thread. Someone's linked to this:

mobile.twitter.com/stellacreasy/status/1530475894002835456?t=at4hx13CXJq9etAJYx_loA&s=19

"Fwiw happen to think even if and when we eradicate FGM, patriarchy will find other ways to oppress women because it’s about power. The very brill
@LeylaHussein
and
@HiboWardere
are campaigners honoured to work with and who discuss how bodily and systemic oppress both possible."

My jaw is on the floor. I wonder what the Sunday politics shows will be like tomorrow?

@Forgotthebins the email i sent earlier to Stella and Kier actually contained the words " I am done"

I've given them so so much leeway over the last few years, but Stella today on the back of following Allisons trial this last month pfffffft!

I just can't do it any more I can no longer support the only party I have ever been a member of.

I'm absolutely devastated to be honest.

It gets easier and is nice to be a free spirit actually. If you had told my 1997 Blair-supporting self I would be voting Conservative in my late 50's, she would not have believed you.

I'm not sure this PN tweets helps Tory MP accuses Labour MP Stella Creasy of being 'drunk' for saying a woman can have a penis

I'm not a tory MP, but it did cross my mind at one point that Stella was drunk tweeting

littlbrowndog · 28/05/2022 21:14

Och don’t be boiled. They don’t like women and girls. Sack em off only thing to do

same as snp.
sack em off they never knew you and they don’t care for you or any women

sack em off

This...the UK centre and centre left parties have only themselves to blame...they don't seem to believe in free speech anymore either.

PronounssheRa · 28/05/2022 21:54

I think Lucy van Pelt may walk among us.

And I agree with her post, if people lie so easily and willingly about women having penises then I can't trust anything they say.

I agree that this is very much the concern. Anyone who ever read Orwell's 1984 knows why.

Boiledbeetle · 28/05/2022 22:06

@littlbrowndog @dinosauriam

To be honest looking back now when John Smith died in May 1994 I think the Labour Party that I knew, that had always represented my values and beliefs, died with him.

It's just unlike his very sudden death the party's death has been agonisingly slow!

MaudeYoung · 28/05/2022 22:10

Is anyone able to say exactly what Creasy has ever achieved in her political career?

Boiledbeetle · 28/05/2022 22:10

Helped end the Labour party?

MagnoliaTaint · 28/05/2022 22:13

If you think that women have penises, I won't believe a single word you say about anything else. Because if you will lie about something so obvious, I will assume you lie about everything.

Yep. I'm actually glad Stella is here to remind us that Labour's position is still that women can have penises and that TWAW.

They are currently trying to pretend they believe both GC women (women are entitled to single sex spaces) and TWAW (transwomen are of the female sex).

Which is patently bollocks and everyone needs to know it.

For what it's worth, it's exactly what the Tory spokesbloke said at the non-binary discussion in the Commons last week.

She can't take all the credit even if she wants to lol. She's had lots of help from many others along the way including Ed Milliband, Margaret Beckett, Lisa Nandy, Angela Rayner etc and all the other women who should know better.....they are elected MPs. If they do not really believe the 'trans identity ideology' gender woo, they shouldn't spout it, as if they do. If they really do believe it, they shouldn't be elected MPs in the first place as they haven't got any common sense.

To be fair I did say helped! Can you imagine the ego if she thought she'd managed it on her own.

I just had to go back and check the email I sent earlier, I had a sudden horror that I'd accidentally sent the sweary sweary vile mood one I'd written earlier in the day.

Thankfully I sent them the swearless version!

My background is in philosophy so it’s really embarrassing to see her mock and poo poo the concept of “homeostatic property clusters”. It’s a perfectly standard concept which has been in use in metaphysics for some time. It’s thought to be a particularly good theory to apply to things that arise in nature - so biological sex.

I also think that what this whole thing boils down to is men want to be women just because they say so. Women like Stella think “it can’t JUST be that, nothing works like that” so tie themselves in knots trying to argue for an unarguable conclusion .

It's strange, isn't it, to think that Penny 'TWAW' Mordaunt MP (Con) has a degree in Philosophy from the University of Reading; and also comes out with this utter shit.

I also think that what this whole thing boils down to is men want to be women just because they say so.

Juat to add - I don't think they do. I don't think most of them want to be women. What they want is simply to have the unchallenged right to say that they want to be women (iyswim), and to act that out in any which way they like, because it meets their needs. And those needs are very, erm, patriarchal.

Happily TWAW has never been an actual Conservative policy although they did come close on self-id until they realised what it really meant.

We do have words which define biology - female isn’t one which is commonly and consistently used solely for sex categories alone

Can anyone explain this? If Stella has ruled out woman and female to refer to the sex class which typically has the capacity to gestate then what words does she use to distinguish the biology of the two sexes?

How would the patriarchy still exist if there were no biological differences between men and women and how would the patriarchy determine who to oppress?

It makes my head hurt.

I would recommend not giving it too much head space. It defies logic because it is an ideology not a scientific fact.
The words woman and female are taken and are not hers to give away.

Yes. Me also.

PrelateChuckles · 28/05/2022 22:59

My default question is always "are they lying, or thick?"

I don't actually think she is thick and believes that mad shit is logical. I think she is desperately wanting to come to the 'right' conclusion and can't lay out a way of getting there, so handwaves everything away because she doesn't want to answer. I do understand that in politics there are lots of horrible answers you wouldn't want to outright state (e.g. prioritising one worthy use of funds over another) and I kind of class this as one of those, to SC, it's one of those 'let's not admit we are saying an unpopular thing' - i.e. that being female is down to feeling a feminine feeling or whatever.

I'd class this more under 'lying' than 'thick', is my general conclusion.

It's unfortunate, and telling re her character, that the handwaving involves mocking people and deliberately misrepresenting their positions.

It's interesting that she was triggered by JKR's use of the words 'luxury beliefs' and automatically assumed it was an attack on her even though Joanne didn't mention her.

That suggests on some level she does know and I think these sort of luxury beliefs are probably the price of membership in certain social circles. It would certainly explain why they're so hard clung to the point of absolute absurdity and offensiveness.

For me it has some parallels to the behaviour of those Tories in the Bullingdon Club. I wouldn't be at all surprised if some (prob not Boris!) had qualms about their expected rites of passage, which we've heard plenty about. But again it's the price of membership and being part of the 'right' set is too important.

And if you think Stella has been risible today Billy Bragg has just compared LGB Alliance to the Nazis and the holocaust .. I shit you not.

Totally agree with you. John Smith’s death was an awful tragedy and
it’s sad to think what would have been, both for the UK and the world if he hadn’t died so young.

I will admit there have been a fair few nights when the insomnia bites that I've tried to work out what an alternate timeline with him surviving would look like.

I do know it's never THIS!

SpindleSheWrote · 29/05/2022 01:09

I wonder what actually happened between the ascension of Tony Blair in 1997 to the GRA in 2004.

That's some paradigm shift in government and the civil service. What were the actual mechanisms, the levers?

I know the PR was pretty much taken care of by the Hayley Cropper story on Corrie: a mild mannered character played by a biological woman, who attracted a kind and lovely mild-mannered boyfriend.

But what of the politics behind the scenes to get this through rather than gay marriage?

I suppose Alistair Campbell and Peter Mandelsen would know.

Boiledbeetle · 29/05/2022 02:02

spindle At some point i really must go and do some decent reading on those years as they passed me by as I was working long long hours during those years.
