Really.... gluten-free brownies.... I will check it out. I was the number 1 purchaser of GF digestive biscuits in my local Sainsbury's store. That apparently is a badge of honour!!

They have Goady Fucker biscuits now? I wondered where the deletions came from.

Thanks for that, I'll now be seeing a good chunk of my weekly shopping in an entirely different light… Grin

"They are ladies-look at their pronouns!"

All the double think bollocks skewered by just seven words.

Been buying 'fuck me it's not butter' for ages now.

So many of the Twitter replies by men under this clip reference the role of power, who has it (comedy fair game) who is an underdog (not fair game), and ‘punching down’ with oblivious lack of reflection on the status of women, who are literally and metaphorically punched down every bloody day.

I think this should be printed on a T-shirt. 😂

It is my new favourite slogan and I am going to quote it at friends people I know who have bought the gender woo and the rainbow lanyards that go with it.

Absolutely - thanks for that link Rex.

EsmaCannonball · 25/05/2022 11:50

The punching down aspect of this was also referenced by Dave Chappelle in his special. He said just when he thought he'd learned the rules he's got white men coming along and telling him, 'I'm a woman now!' The people who still have all the power to make the rules have now made a rule where if you don't pretend that they are the bottom of the heap, they will destroy you. It's all a con- trick to put the truly powerful beyond criticism.

I’ve just watched it all. My god, trans activists and the Guardian and others are so stupid. So utterly stupid. Gervais specifically says before he gets going that he will be using irony and he won’t mean the things he says. He then makes his jokes. He makes jokes about trans people, a baby’s funeral, christians, muslims, Hitler, AIDS, eskimos, racism, abortion, everything. Then he says of all the offensive things he says, people only ever focus on the trans things.

And then what does the news reports and activists do? Focus only on trans issues! They just did exactly what he predicted they would. And I think he structured it as he did deliberately. He did the trans jokes early, then the bit about how offended people only focus on trans jokes late, because he knew they wouldn’t actually watch it to that point to realise they were going to walk the path he so easily predicted. He’s brilliant.

WeeBisom · 25/05/2022 12:14

I just heard a clip of Nish Kumar being hysterical over Ricky gervais (seriously, he sounds like a gasping toddler having a tantrum). His poor audience instead of hearing jokes were subjected to statements like “trans women are far more likely to be victims of sexual violence than perpetrators of sexual violence” and “a rapist isn’t going to be put off by a sign on a toilet door.” This is just a sermon , not a comedy gig.

Im very amused at all of these self ascribed “cis” men coming out to defend transwomen. I’ve never seen them do the same for boring old women.

MagnoliaTaint · 25/05/2022 12:18

Aye, well. Nish gonna Nish, in't he? The best part of his show was the segments where women were mildly rude to him.

NecessaryScene · 25/05/2022 12:21

“trans women are far more likely to be victims of sexual violence than perpetrators of sexual violence”

Interested by this stat. Is it true? And is it any less true for all males? I think it's probably true of all males - from the logic that one perpetrator is likely to have multiple victims, so the perpetrator count is lower than the victim count. (Even if male perpetrators tend to target female victims more than male).

IIRC it's not true for murder - there are more transwomen imprisoned for murder than have been victims.

Yes. I think it was a very carefully thought through and put together piece. Some of the jokes were offensive, horrible - and some of them weren't funny. But they all hang together to make some well considered & pertinent points. (And some of them were genuinely hilarious. I find him funniest when he breaks the 4th wall.)

In fact the whole act was a back-and-forth between honesty and artifice. Which can be a very useful exercise.

AryaStarkWolf · 25/05/2022 12:23

It's hilarious to see the difference between the media reviews of his show compared to the Audience reviews bahahaha

MagnoliaTaint · 25/05/2022 12:23

To do any kind of stats, Necessary, you'd probably need some more parameters. Are we talking in the UK, or in Brazil, for example?

Mandodari · 25/05/2022 12:25

I liked Nish Kumars comment that Ricky Gervais should try being a better comedian. The phrase physician heal thy self sprung to mind.

BraveBananaBadge · 25/05/2022 12:33

I like Nish a lot usually. I think he's mates with mad angry cry woman isn't he, so it's not surprising. What does stand out is his generation of comics not even taking the time to look the craft of Gervais, Chappelle etc to see what they're doing as comedians first and foremost, and why they're so popular.

NecessaryScene · 25/05/2022 12:38

Exactly - tackling this stuff and not having it just be a "lecture" is hard.

Even on this side - Bill Maher I think was a bit too close to the lecture side. It was a bit of a sugar-coated lecture.

But Gervais and Chapelle know how to tackle this as proper comedy. Truly an art-form, and they're skewering people so precisely and cleanly that their targets often don't even fully understand how that they're being skewered, or sometimes even realise that they have been.

GC females get cross about something someone says in The Debate.

Their action? Do some stuff with pretty ribbons.

TRA types get cross about something someone says in The Debate.

Their action? Smash up property.

Interesting ... and they accuse us of literal violence Confused

Another Ricky fan and loved this - thanks for the heads up OP, DH and I watched it last night.

I'm sure Ricky is very grateful for the "how to be successful" advice from this guy (who?) 😂
