There’s a couple of things come to my mind when I see responses by The Guardian, other comedians etc.

one is that a few (probably not so few now) years ago there was a comedian (who I forget the name of, but I’m sure someone will remember) causing a stir by making rape jokes. And male comics were falling over themselves to say yes, they’re awful jokes but comedy should have no boundaries, everything should be fair game. We’re not defending him, but we don’t want to start telling people what they can make jokes about because that’s censorship.

Those same comics and media outlets are saying very different things now.

the other is Matt Stone and Trey Parker who have consistently stuck to the line “nothing is off limits” and when it was (erroneously) reported that Isaac Hayes left over their attitude to Scientology Stone was quoted as saying
“that Hayes practiced a double standard regarding the treatment of religion on South Park. "[We] never heard a peep out of Isaac in any way until we [lampooned] Scientology. He wants a different standard for religions other than his own, and to me, that is where intolerance and bigotry begin."

now personally I do have my lines, the things I can’t laugh at and I’m fine with where I draw my lines, but if you defend someone’s right to make rape jokes you fu king need to justify why that’s ok and jokes about trans people are off limits.

(I wasn’t censoring my swearing there, btw, it’s a typo 🤣)

Waitwhat23 · 25/05/2022 21:27

@Deliriumoftheendless suspect that it might be Frankie Boyle or Jimmy Carr you're thinking of, both of whom seem to be rather infamous in regards to their 'jokes' about rape.

Frankie Boyle has criticised Ricky Gervais for his jokes about gender ideology while rather conveniently ignoring his own deeply controversial material.

Deliriumoftheendless · 25/05/2022 21:38

No, it’s some non entity (possibly public school boy acting street) who has dropped from public consciousness.

Tbf he’s irrelevant, it’s the reaction from established comics (one of whom was Richard Herring) who are now singing a different tune indeed.

Deliriumoftheendless · 25/05/2022 21:41

Dapper Laughs.

Waitwhat23 · 25/05/2022 21:47

Just looked him up. Wow.

Waitwhat23 · 25/05/2022 21:49

And not in a good way. Rape 'joke' directed at an audience member - bloody hell.

Rape jokes are just.....shite....

BBC story here.

What is most worrying, to me, about this is the response from GLAAD
(GLAAD described here as a US LGBT rights group)
Their tweet started with "We watched the Ricky Gervais "comedy" special on Netflix so you don't have to".
Reminds me of "we read JK Rowling's essay so you don't have to" - we can just tell you all what we think is in there, so you don't even have to consider the point that he (Ricky) or she (JKO is making.

BeyondPurpleTulips · 25/05/2022 22:16

'Fame' back in 2007 featured a skit about ME/CFS, it's non existence in Africa ("sorry, can't get water from the well today - ME"), and increasingly frustrated "its not a disease!" from Ricky.

I was already a fan (though I did hate the office), suffering from at that time unexplained CFS, and it was funny despite punching down.

I did not vandalise any park benches. I couldn't. Cause of the ME.

Very caaaaaaaaaaaaaareful article from the beeb.

2Rebecca · 25/05/2022 22:47

Interesting the beeb article links people to the Glaad tweet where they instantly see all the responses telling Glaad they are over reacting and didn't have to watch it. Glaad channelling Mary Whitehouse here

Individuals, or groups can be both hurting and hurt others.

It's wrong to excuse terrible behaviour because the perpetrator is seen as a victim.

Terri Pratchett never said or wrote that.

It’s as accurate and sincere as all your other claims.

Reminds me of when Stewart Lee berates his audience for clapping at jokes they "agree with" rather than find funny. Surely there's nothing new here?

The difference being that Lee believes men can magically change sex. Gervais knows they can't.

BeyondPurpleTulips · 25/05/2022 23:06

Terry Pratchett also said “It’s vital to remember who you really are. It’s very important. It isn’t a good idea to rely on other people or things to do it for you, you see. They always get it wrong”

Make if that what you will 🤷🏼‍♀️

?? Lee's stance on the trans issue has no relevance to what I'm referring to here actually.

nepeta · 26/05/2022 00:46

Gervais was not making fun of transgender people but the activists who apply the ideology of gender identity like a bulldozer which levels everything in its way: Our words are taken away from us, we can no longer say that we are women because we belong to the female sex and are adult human beings, and our rights are also being taken away.

This is a consequence of the gender identity ideology which argues that trans rights equals the right to redefine lots of ordinary words, to force abstract identities on everyone (which end up being based on sexist stereotypes), and to make it impossible to even mention the female sex.

Those TRAs doing this are not marginalised individuals. They have the ear of many governments, universities, charities and much of the mainstream media.

And everything Gervais said in that skit I have heard stated by actual TRAs online.
