@BreadInCaptivity

Strange, #OwenJonesIsAMisogynist was no. 1 trending in the UK a couple of minutes ago and now I can't see it listed at all

Looks like Twitter have removed the # from their trending algorithm.....

Must be a simple admin oversight

Private Eye also has this cartoon in new issue.

That tweet by Butterworth has made me gasp!

BingBangB0ng · 13/04/2022 13:02

Looks like people who dislike each other being reciprocally unpleasant to me.

PronounssheRa · 13/04/2022 13:04

Jones incited a pile on of butterworth a while ago

AutumnSquill · 13/04/2022 13:09

Private Eye is now top of UK trends on twitter, and is shown as trending with #OwenJonesIsAMisogynist, so it hasn't gone away.

Peaness · 13/04/2022 13:11

Funnily enough this came upon my twitter right under LOJ.

Word of the day is 'maw-worm' (19th century): one who insists that they have done nothing wrong, despite evidence to the contrary.

@TerraNovaTwo

Not only is OJ a misogynist, I believe him to be a covert narc. His gaslighting techniques are most ingenious.
He reminds me a lot of an individual I know who I also believe to be a narcissist. Very self-righteous and I think genuinely incapable of seeing other people's perspectives or challenging his own thinking. Lost his job due to bullying, interestingly.

But I think it's good that The Guardian is taking action on this formally, even if they were forced by circumstances to do so. It might not make OJ take stock but it will be more difficult for him to claim he is being treated inappropriately.

The question then will be why did it take management so long to act?

Thelikelylass · 13/04/2022 13:22

what does the talcum reference mean?
I have to say, I love being on MN, this section especially balanced and informative...then I look at twitter and even though I dislike Owen Jones heartily and had to define my view of him as a misogynist to a big fan of his (and I won!) - I am very glad I am not on twitter.
Some Twitter users swarm like shoals of fish from one pile on to another. I honestly think people like OJ must have their mental health damaged by being so excessively out there.
It isn't normal is it?

EmbarrassingHadrosaurus · 13/04/2022 13:25

what does the talcum reference mean?

It's a riff on Malcolm X.

BenCooperisaGod · 13/04/2022 13:26

Talcum is a reference to one of his many excellent nicknames. This one being Talcum X

yes I saw that Talcum X mock up poster and got that but wondered why talcum. Was hoping it would be something more exciting! (well as exciting as talcum powder would ever get...)

What action are they actually taking though?

The PE report reads like they've commissioned the report then swept it under the rug.

WinterTrees · 13/04/2022 13:31

Just scrolling through the twitter thread and came across a screenshot of that time last year when OJ retweeted a mother who was 'heart sick with worry' about her gender-questioning 16 year old daughter and unleashed a huge pile on of abuse.

He's a bully alright.

LizzieSiddal · 13/04/2022 13:39

Both Owen Jones and Private Eye are trending.

Talcolm seems a bit quiet. He’s been found out and I hope he’s shitting himself.

Thelikelylass · 13/04/2022 13:40

Interesting. There is a letter to Viner said to have been signed by over 100 women, it says that these women are horrified at his misogyny due to the tweet he made comparing anti-trans activists to anti-abortionist activists.

Awkwardy · 13/04/2022 13:41

Benjamin Butterworth dislikes him too?? I'd have thought they'd get on well.

I think Buttergasp gets mistaken for OJ occasionally.

Two men whose over-valuation of their own talent is exceeded only by their dislike of women, especially successful women.

I mean the report itself. We'll see what they do with it, and it may take some time I suspect before the public knows, but having an outside report is a very good thing. Had they simply taken action themselves it would have been easy for OJ to try and spin it.

@EmbarrassingHadrosaurus

Also referencing the fact that he is white. He also happens to be Oxbridge educated and from a solidly middle class background.

he's trending. right up there with tupperware

unpleasant hypocrite that he is

WinterTrees · 13/04/2022 14:00

I came here to post the Foxy Kimono tweet too, Pronouns.

Misogynists just don't see misogyny, it seems. Even when it's been pointed out by an external investigator. What a surprise.

RoyalCorgi · 13/04/2022 14:03

The fact that he's made an enemy of Benjamin Butterworth is revealing of just how awful OJ is. He dislikes people on his own side almost as much as people on the opposite side. I can't wait to see him fall out with Laurie Penny.

If ever Kath Viner grows a pair and sacks him, I'm not sure who else would employ him. An ability to get on with one's colleagues is surely a prerequisite in most jobs.

RoyalCorgi · 13/04/2022 14:05

Talcum X was a nickname originally given to an American journalist called Shaun King. The joke made more sense when applied to King - with OJ, it's just the fact that he seems himself as a social justice warrior despite the fact that he is white, middle-class and never does anything more warrior-like than get into arguments on Twitter.
