@Rubidium

He comes across as such a petulant child Which is rather unedifying in a man approaching his forties.

"it’s about class. Owen went to Oxford and was a bag carrier in Westminster before being handed a national newspaper column. So many of these hard-Left types have no life experience and it shows."

There's a longer version of the Jones/ Nimco Ali encounter where Jones talks about his friends who grew up in poverty and Nimco comes back with, "you saw it, I lived it". Later he says, 'These are people I grew up with, my community" to which Nimco replies, "you grew up with them, I was them." Just perfect.

From about 7.15 onwards: www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/election-2019-50728428

Also, (from the clip), "I grew up under a Conservative government." Owen Jones was twelve when the Blair government came to power. All his teenage years were spent under a Labour government. He did not grow up under the Tories. He is lying.

Ah, great, thank you. I did want to see the whole thing without jumpy edits.

@letsallchant

Is there any sign of the statement that OJ posted a shot of on Twitter on the Guardian's website, or anywhere else? It's not listed on their press releases page on the site. How is it a statement if it's not actually been circulated by the Guardian?
Why is story underlined twice in blue?

RoseslnTheHospital · 15/04/2022 16:43

I reckon it's just a grammar check in whatever software the statement was written in. Probably wants a comma after "story" or similar.

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 15/04/2022 16:45

Looking again, is that a grammatical reminder to tell the reader/writer that there should be a comma after story?

So this could be a screenshot of a document that isn't cleared for public release yet.

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 15/04/2022 16:47

Cross-post.

So this is not the final read-only version at all, and we have not even seen one of those yet. I think that's significant.

Be right back, I've just got to type up a really incredible reference about myself...

FOJN · 15/04/2022 17:06

Do we have any confirmation that statement originated with the Guardian and not on the laptop of someone with a vested interested in defending their reputation?

SpinningMeSoftly · 15/04/2022 17:08

Yep, that's looking like a draft, via email.

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 15/04/2022 17:17

It's not even a draft of the statement.

The quotation marks suggest it's a draft of someone reporting what he or she heard an unnamed "Guardian spokesman" say.

SpinningMeSoftly · 15/04/2022 17:24

'[The Guardian] is edited by Twitter.'

Spot on, Suzanne; and a not inappriopriate F.U. to Viner.

ResisterRex · 15/04/2022 17:39

That sentence:

"In relation to X it is not true that..."

It doesn't quite have the style of a press release. "In relation to" isn't great written English, is it? It seems quasi-spoken English, not a formal statement about a serious matter that's been leaked.

DomesticatedZombie · 15/04/2022 17:57

That is an indictment.

The only person Owen cares about is Owen. He pretends to give a shit about women and minorities to ‘make up the numbers’ in his fight against the right wing - the ‘right wing’ of course being anyone who doesn’t completely and unquestioningly agree with everything he says.

He thinks his (very light) trace of Mancunian accent and sexuality are enough to negate all the privilege he’s had in life - being white, male, able-bodied, middle class, Oxbridge, graduate ‘parliamentary researcher’ job. They don’t. Nimco got it spot on.

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 15/04/2022 18:35

Back in October, OJ tweeted this:

Who are the voices on the police and institutional misogyny that need to be amplified right now (obviously exclusively women)?

twitter.com/OwenJones84/status/1443984954141155344?t=yyDOP8q7hs6dMBv3PQc0rg&s=19

In response, people dutifully tagged in women who've analysed police misogyny and institutional misogyny for him to talk to. One by one, those women replied to say, what have you tagged me into? I'm blocked, so I can't see what he posted.

Women are not a minority, but we are a marginalised group. Usually, when you have blocked large numbers of advocates for a particular marginalised group's rights, who also belong to that group, you need to take a long, hard look at yourself. I suppose Owen Jones would say it's the way they advocate. If they were just a bit more moderate, a bit more conciliatory, a bit less demanding in the way they speak up for women's rights...

Otherwise known as tone-policing.

Sheffield, actually, but yes, otherwise, spot on.
ScribblingPixie · 15/04/2022 18:44

Don't you think the Guardian 'statement' was just him getting on to his commissioning editor and asking them if they could dash off an email saying he wasn't found guilty of bullying? It's just his snapshot of a printout. I see John McDonnell's tweeted it, saying it's a smear campaign 'as Owen asked him too' - to whole-heartedly critical responses. Pathetic stuff.

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 15/04/2022 19:29

It's not a print-out though, because the software grammar check alerts are showing.

This is either a screenshot sent to Owen by someone else who was writing it, or a screenshot of a document open on Owen's laptop/phone, which Owen had editing powers on.

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 15/04/2022 19:57

Whoever the originator of that document is, whose draft Owen Jones had seen, he/she/voidgender is a slow typist. I still can't find the full, public-facing version of a statement anywhere on the Guardian website.

People on Owen's facebook page are urging him to sue Private Eye. I look forward to it.

Organictangerine · 15/04/2022 20:02

Did he ever comment on Priti Patel not resigning after her bullying inquiry?

Deliriumoftheendless · 15/04/2022 20:54

I’m guessing those telling him to sue The Eye have never read it or know what it is.

Bertiebiscuit · 15/04/2022 21:23

He's a nasty entitled little pr*ck, everyone knows he hates women, especially women with any power, wealth and opinions - he belongs to a cadre of lefty men who would like nothing better than to take us back to the time when women had no rights, were not treated as humans, only allowed to exist to make dinner, tea and babies

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 15/04/2022 21:45

This appears to be one of the people urging him to sue.

I never knew this:

"Aimee Challenor, the former Green Party candidate who used her father as her election agent even though he was facing charges of raping and torturing a ten-year-old girl, for which he was later jailed, was among those who responded to Ms Kennedy’s post of August 14 to the Trans Rights UK Facebook group, with suggestions of who to blacklist. All the named academics were women."

Some of those apparently targeted included Stock and Freedman. That article is from 2018 - about a large but closed group that listed people who ran courses to avoid, I think. Of Stock, this was written in the group's page:

"“File a hate crime report against her, and then the chairman and vice-chair,” advised one. “Drag them over the f*ing coals.”"

TheScienceStupid · 15/04/2022 22:03

I love that his Guardian profile says "Owen Jones is a Guardian columnist and the author of [...] The Establishment – And How They Get Away With It". Write about what you know, as they say...

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 15/04/2022 22:13

Kennedy may be watching this thread. The exhortation to Owen to sue Private Eye is no longer visible. Fortunately, I took a photograph in case I had problems with my eyesight at a later date.

I'm sure such a crowdfunder would be a great success, just like Dr Christian Jesse. Oh wait...
