Starmer says biology matters for 99.9% of women

In the Scotland section. It looks like the Respect My X campaign is having an impact.

Biology as basis for sex is common sense, says Starmer

www.thetimes.co.uk/article/01012bc6-ba77-11ec-94e5-2197dead5942?shareToken=20e63c70e9e3f8c424182815f247e84e

"During a visit to Glasgow this morning, Starmer was asked if he agrees with Duffield’s view that “of course a woman cannot have a penis”.
He replied: “I think for 99.9 per cent of women biology matters and of course that it what defines them.
“Nobody is quarrelling with any of that and I think Rosie and I would say exactly the same thing on this. There is a small minority of people who were born with a gender that they struggle with and don’t identify with.
“They often go through quite a traumatic time. I think we should respect and support them in that.
“That isn’t to suggest that for 99.9 per cent of women biology isn’t the determining factor, of course it is, it is plain common sense and I don’t quarrel with that, but I don’t want to leave out of account the smaller group of people who really do struggle with their gender identity.”"

Budge up women ! Let some sad people join you

malloo · 12/04/2022 20:14

Well that's interesting!

AnneLovesGilbert · 12/04/2022 20:19

People will remember he declared it shouldn’t be said that only women have a cervix. Which was so patently fucking ridiculous it’ll stick.

FOJN · 12/04/2022 20:24

Biology as basis for sex is common sense, says Starmer

Oh please do fuck off trying to play both side.

Biology is the only basis for sex; it's a factual statement not a fashionable one.

Rights · 12/04/2022 20:24

“born with a gender…”

Oh Keir Confused

Looks like Labour are finally realising what an utter gift to the Tories their whole stance on this issue has been.

Artichokeleaves · 12/04/2022 20:28

Ah. So women are a biological reality (and so by extension are men) but there's a tiny proportion of male people who should have unfettered access to women's spaces? Is that where you're going Kier?

Come on. Make the next logical step.

If sex and gender are two different things, and the two sexes are a fixed thing, then yes there are some times and spaces in which the female sex need to be apart from male people regardless of male identity or feelings, and where sex and gender needs must be met separately.

And if you say no to that, then what you're arguing is that female rights are conditional upon the gift and agreement of much more important male people, and that my friend is called Male Supremacism.

So where are you taking this?

ResisterRex · 12/04/2022 20:28

"Looks like Labour are finally realising what an utter gift to the Tories their whole stance on this issue has been."

How could they not have seen it before? I know they didn't and the past is the past, but I could never understand why they couldn't see this. And now the PM and Chancellor have been fined, Labour could be up and away if only they'd cottoned on.

And now it's still a fudge.

I don't get it.

Oh hang on that was the last lot.

dropthevipers · 12/04/2022 20:29

Oh dear. Given the TRA's binfire over some women having lunch, imagine the shitstorm if Starmer risie's in any way from TWAW? Also curious that he only appears to think women are bothered about this? Twat.

tabbycatstripy · 12/04/2022 20:30

Biology is the only determining factor in what a woman is. All adult female people are women. Some of them may identify as the opposite sex. I have no problem with them doing so.

Starmer seems to think making the proportion of male people who get to be women (rather than identify as women) very small makes this better.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 12/04/2022 20:31

It'll be interesting to see how this plays out. They've looked completely batshit in recent weeks as they've struggled with the flat earthism they've embraced so fervently.

There's a lot invested in how they handle this as I will not give them back my vote until they return to a respectful approach to women's rights and child safeguarding and an acknowledgement of competing rights. Come on Starmer - leave the toddlers having their tantrums and join the grown ups in some adult discussions.

Circumferences · 12/04/2022 20:32

“Biology is clear, I deliberately talk about hard fought sex-based rights that women over generations have fought for, and we have still got a long way to go in terms of achieving that, but we have also got to accept that transphobia exists and transphobia is real"

Transphobia does exist yes, but women protecting their rights are not guilty of it. Stop pretending we are, and stop with the gaslighting.

The problem is, is that the term "transphobia" has morphed into this ridiculous Neverland of Narnia where women who say "transwomen are not women" are accused of the apparently violent and heinous crime of "transphobia".

Protect transpeople from actual transphobia which almost entirely comes from violent homophobic men, and we'll join forces.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 12/04/2022 20:33

99.9%?

Que?

Exactly this. But as an aside how mealy mouthed and wet! Lifelong Labour voter, although no longer a member over this, so they have some way to go.

@Rubidium

"For the many, not the few"

Oh hang on that was the last lot.

This lot are just 'For the men'...

I mean, we are getting them closer and closer...look how far we've come in just a fortnight.

Redshoeblueshoe · 12/04/2022 20:36

I hope they have been getting a lot of grief on the doorsteps.
My labour MP is still adamant TWAW

tabbycatstripy · 12/04/2022 20:38

I don’t think we are closer. Starmer is saying 0.1% of women are biologically male. He’s sticking with legal definitions when he should be pointing out that the law was written to provide support to trans people by changing their legal status, but it doesn’t literally change their sex.

Frankly I'd trust them as far as I can spit.

Starmer may be finally realising what absolute unelectable twits Labour are looking to the general public, enough to start shifting the messaging.

However by their deeds shall ye know them.

They might make sufficiently electable noises to get into power; I don't believe for a second that once in power they'd demonstrate actually holding any respect for female equality and access. They'll abandon the marketing and do what that batshit crew truly do believe in, safe in the knowledge that the general public can't stop them for five years.

Westfacing · 12/04/2022 20:45

He still couldn't bring himself to say that women don't have a penis!

KittenKong · 12/04/2022 20:47

He can take a rubbing jump (or as my grandmother used to say ‘haddaway and loss himsel’)

DoubleYouOhEmAyEn · 12/04/2022 20:47

Looks to me like he may have realised he's made a catastrophic blunder and is now trying to back track but in a cowardly way. He needs to do much much more.
This suggests to me he thinks 0.01% of women are male. Funny how many of them are currently in women's prisons. Its OK though they are very rare so it obviously doesn't matter in Starmerland. Crack on.
Doesn't mention the safeguarding of vulnerable children.
Not good enough.

DifficultBloodyWoman · 12/04/2022 20:47

That is really not enough to overshadow his previous comments and stupidity on the subject.

It sounds like a load of political waffle trying to backtrack without actually admitting he was wrong.

Cyw2018 · 12/04/2022 20:48

Still not enough to win back my vote. Starmer and labour need to try harder than that.

WhereYouLeftIt · 12/04/2022 20:49

Too little too late Keir, and still factually wrong.

And as for - "There is a small minority of people who were born with a gender that they struggle with and don’t identify with" - how do you know that? Because they tell you? Are you sure they're all telling the truth? That none of them are just predators who find saying the magic words a lot easier than training to be a priest / social worker /Oxfam disaster worker / any job with a disproportionate share of aggressors? Not one?

I am VERY tired of the 'most oppressed, most marginalised' shite. Some will be, but not all. In fact I'd bet damned few fall into that category, given how common being a creepy man is, and how attractive saying the magic words must be to them.

LilithRises · 12/04/2022 20:49

Born with a gender?

Really?
I had high hopes for Keir - but he is a such a disappointment.
