Starmer says biology matters for 99.9% of women

In the Scotland section. It looks like the Respect My X campaign is having an impact.

Biology as basis for sex is common sense, says Starmer

www.thetimes.co.uk/article/01012bc6-ba77-11ec-94e5-2197dead5942?shareToken=20e63c70e9e3f8c424182815f247e84e

"During a visit to Glasgow this morning, Starmer was asked if he agrees with Duffield’s view that “of course a woman cannot have a penis”.
He replied: “I think for 99.9 per cent of women biology matters and of course that it what defines them.
“Nobody is quarrelling with any of that and I think Rosie and I would say exactly the same thing on this. There is a small minority of people who were born with a gender that they struggle with and don’t identify with.
“They often go through quite a traumatic time. I think we should respect and support them in that.
“That isn’t to suggest that for 99.9 per cent of women biology isn’t the determining factor, of course it is, it is plain common sense and I don’t quarrel with that, but I don’t want to leave out of account the smaller group of people who really do struggle with their gender identity.”"

Anyway he still hasn’t defined women, if these trans women aren’t an adult human female what is it that makes them a woman.

The GRA creates a legal fiction, that’s all.

Instantnoodles · 12/04/2022 21:48

Too late for me. They casually threw women under the bus for political purposes. I won't be manipulated back into the fold.

He needs to own what he’s said previously and explain himself properly if he expects to be taken seriously. Can women have penises or can’t they? Which is it kier?

OatSprout · 12/04/2022 21:56

Trying to weasel back into women’s good books but it’s bulllshit. The key message is that he still thinks TWAW.

ItWasGoodWhileItLastedRVN123 · 12/04/2022 21:58

Still not clearly saying that men are the ones with the penises, women do NOT have penises, men can never be women or vice versa, and that a woman is an adult human female, or that biological men do not belong in women's protected safe spaces and facilities.

So a cowardly knob then.

DifficultBloodyWoman · 12/04/2022 22:00

@Nat3kids

To be fair, a lot of people on this thread are jumping to conclusions about what his / Labour’s position on prisons, changing facilities are, etc but I would like to hear it from the horse’s mouth. Does anyone know what his stated position is? Genuinely curious.
We may not know his or Labour’s position ‘from his own mouth’ but we do know it from his shadow ministers that he has put in place and supported.

Labour thinks men belong in women’s spaces if that is what men want.

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 12/04/2022 22:01

Fuck him. And I say that as a fucking member of the Labour Party. He is a weak weasel and I don’t trust him at all.

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 12/04/2022 22:02

My rights are still not his to give away.

It's actually disgusting how little he thinks of us. Not only are we to be a costume for men, we are also simple minded enough to be swayed by wish wash. Starmer is limp as old lettuce.

I really want to be clear exactly what he’s trying to say, but I’m still not.

EwwSprouts · 12/04/2022 22:12

@Datun [grinGrin
He knows he's got to try to appeal to women because the number crunchers have told him, but do I believe he's genuine?

Saltyquiche · 12/04/2022 22:13

Kier will need to be much more honest about what that means for safeguarding female spaces because his statement is vague and open to interpretation

It's worse than that imo. I don't believe he thinks TWAW, I do believe he thinks that thinking TWAW is a vote winner and more important than actual women.
LauriePartridge4Eva · 12/04/2022 22:15

It's aggravating how often he says he wants to be clear whilst proceeding to spew shite.

Terfydactyl · 12/04/2022 22:19

@tabbycatstripy

Yes, they should. We know he thinks some women have penises. Now does he think those ‘women’ should be sharing accommodation/changing facilities with women and girls?
More so with his wife and daughter?

The other thing is, giving him benefit of the doubt here, maybe he still thinks it's old school transexuals using our spaces. I mean surely by now he knows better, but ok.
We now say no to them too.
No one asked us back then, no one ever asked me. We rescind our acceptance of sharing spaces with any male born over about the age of 8ish.

Further, labour will have to do a lot more than just say words now. I expect a plan of some kind to make males stay out. If that plan costs money, I expect to know where that money will come from too.

LauriePartridge4Eva · 12/04/2022 22:22

Is Momentum still a thing in the LP? If it is, then he absolutely KNOWS these men are not like Hinge and Brackett.

Faffertea · 12/04/2022 22:24

@Datun Grin

I had high hopes for him when he became leader especially after Corbyn but I’ve been disappointed. Where has any clarity in what he says gone to? Mealy mouthed, fence sitting and trying to pacify everyone.
Well Keir, you can’t. Women matter. Our rights and the words we use to describe ourselves matter. And many of us are very angry.

Hoardasurass · 12/04/2022 22:25

He's behaving like an abusive man who's been dumped/had the police called on and is saying whatever he has to to reel the abused spouse (women in this case) back in.
Let's be honest he has as much intention of changing his/labour's beliefs/policies on this as the abusive males (in above analogy) do and I believe him even less than said male

Ithinkitsadoughnut · 12/04/2022 22:28

He does know women can vote ?

MindTheGapMoveAlong · 12/04/2022 22:40

‘People born with a gender’? You’re not ‘born with a gender’ you mealy-mouthed numpty. He really doesn’t get it, does he? As a lawyer and politician his ignorance and lack of critical thought are beyond breath-taking.

If that white, straight, rich, knighted man told me to my face that my two daughters had been born with a gender, he may well be eating his own teeth!
