Starmer says biology matters for 99.9% of women

In the Scotland section. It looks like the Respect My X campaign is having an impact.

Biology as basis for sex is common sense, says Starmer

www.thetimes.co.uk/article/01012bc6-ba77-11ec-94e5-2197dead5942?shareToken=20e63c70e9e3f8c424182815f247e84e

"During a visit to Glasgow this morning, Starmer was asked if he agrees with Duffield’s view that “of course a woman cannot have a penis”.
He replied: “I think for 99.9 per cent of women biology matters and of course that it what defines them.
“Nobody is quarrelling with any of that and I think Rosie and I would say exactly the same thing on this. There is a small minority of people who were born with a gender that they struggle with and don’t identify with.
“They often go through quite a traumatic time. I think we should respect and support them in that.
“That isn’t to suggest that for 99.9 per cent of women biology isn’t the determining factor, of course it is, it is plain common sense and I don’t quarrel with that, but I don’t want to leave out of account the smaller group of people who really do struggle with their gender identity.”"

Yep he’s not even near it , is he? Got to keep those mini Jimmy Savilles onside

Westfacing · 12/04/2022 20:51

To be honest I'm giving up.

If the Labour front bench want to be cowards then there's nothing I can do about it.

NancyDrawed · 12/04/2022 20:51

It's a slight change from ' for the vast majority of women' which was the line at the end of March

quite frankly i do not trust the Labour Party and until that changes they will not speak in my name

Fenlandia · 12/04/2022 20:58

I still don't really understand, after years of trying, how a man who is dissociated from his body and identifies strongly and painfully with some stereotypes of the opposite sex, is literally the same as me. Saying it's only a teeny tiny number doesn't help either.

tabbycatstripy · 12/04/2022 21:00

I don’t understand how he doesn’t get that men taking our word for ourselves and changing its meaning without democratic discussion and consent is entitled misogyny.

MarshaBradyo · 12/04/2022 21:00

What a load of guff

Keep on trying with new versions

Blackandwhitehorse · 12/04/2022 21:03

He’s still saying the same thing though really, that some men are women. They should ask him the Staniland question.

tabbycatstripy · 12/04/2022 21:06

Yes, they should. We know he thinks some women have penises. Now does he think those ‘women’ should be sharing accommodation/changing facilities with women and girls?

Dinosauria · 12/04/2022 21:07

@88sausagefactory88

Budge up women ! Let some sad people join you
Grin Sad
Signalbox · 12/04/2022 21:08

How could they not have seen it before?

Arrogance and "no debate". They've backed themselves into a massive echo chamber the result being that they all believe their own propaganda. They've finally started to emerge from the echo chamber and slammed head first into reality. Must be a bit of a shock!

GibbonsGoatsGibbons · 12/04/2022 21:09

Wanker. Women is not a mixed sex group Angry

gardenhelpneeded · 12/04/2022 21:09

Well but of course that’s what I meant. Gaslighting, backtracking arsehole. What a disappointment they are.

Now just need Sturgeon to get with it.

Sunflower987 · 12/04/2022 21:10

"but I don’t want to leave out of account the smaller group of people who really do struggle with their gender identity.”

The BUT there ruins the first part of what he says.
He's conflating sex and gender.
And the 99.9% figure he gives what on earth is he on about.
I won't be voting for him that's for sure.

I also think he needs to be specifically asked about self I.D.
He's never clear cut and dances around it all.
He just annoys me, I am sick of hearing about 'the struggle of trans,' what about the women and children?
Fed up with it.

MimbleCat · 12/04/2022 21:11

@JayAlfredPrufrock

99.9%?

Que?

Only 70,000 women have penises, according to Keir!!! That's an awful lot of penises (read MEN) in women's spaces.

Yup. Hoist on their own petard. And frankly, not worth my vote.
AngelinaFibres · 12/04/2022 21:12

Women are biologically female adult humans. They never, ever have a penis. Transwomen are biologically male adult humans who wish to identify as the female gender . Their sex can never change. Ever. The vast majority still have a penis (and looking at the surgical procedure involved in reshaping it I can't blame them for keeping the penis) . When Kier Starmer says this I will have slightly more respect for him.

Voice0fReason · 12/04/2022 21:12

Although this is important to 99.9% of women, we are going to ignore their needs and focus on ensuring that any men who feel oppressed can be pandered to.

He's trying to play both sides and he is failing.

Nat3kids · 12/04/2022 21:15

To be fair, a lot of people on this thread are jumping to conclusions about what his / Labour’s position on prisons, changing facilities are, etc but I would like to hear it from the horse’s mouth. Does anyone know what his stated position is? Genuinely curious.

_* THIS THIS THIS THIS THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!*_
JellySaurus · 12/04/2022 21:17

So he's still not saying anything other than that men should be counted as women if that's what they want.

Signalbox · 12/04/2022 21:21

Only 70,000 women have penises, according to Keir!!! That's an awful lot of penises (read MEN) in women's spaces.

That's quite a low estimate as well. Although there is no reliable data on this according to the .gov website. Despite this Stonewall estimate 1% of the population are trans (including those who call themselves NB). So approx. 700,000 with approx. 350,000 of those being people with penises.

tabbycatstripy · 12/04/2022 21:21

‘To be fair, a lot of people on this thread are jumping to conclusions about what his / Labour’s position on prisons, changing facilities are, etc but I would like to hear it from the horse’s mouth. Does anyone know what his stated position is? Genuinely curious.’

‘Labour will protect single sex spaces.’

Big buts:

  1. He thinks people can change sex.
  2. He admits services can exclude TW from single sex spaces in very limited circumstances, but he doesn’t say what those circumstances are. I think he mentioned refuges once.

His position seems similar to the SNP’s. They seem to jog along with the line that TWAW, so can use single sex spaces almost all the time, but ‘case by case’ a service might exclude an individual transwomen in extraordinary circumstances.

Effectively - hard to tell what he means but it doesn’t sound like protecting single sex spaces to me.

TheGreatATuin · 12/04/2022 21:34

Honestly, right now I wouldn't trust him to sit the right way on a toilet seat.
He's shown massive errors of judgement over this and that he is incapable of understanding and navigating complex issues.
He needs to go and Labour needs another leader.
Rosie Duffield can have a go. She's got more balls than he does.

MrsDanversBroom · 12/04/2022 21:37

So weaselly, still not getting my vote.
