Boris Speaks!

Sky News.

He thinks it's unfair for biological men to compete in women's sports.

He says it's important to preserve women's spaces.

Says he has a lot to learn about the issue but we have to be sensible.

Labour have left the door wide open and Boris has walked through it!

CorvusPurpureus · 06/04/2022 20:00

Just had a brief exchange of emails with my local Toryboy MP. I work abroad part of the year but maintain a UK residence.

He's very clear & unequivocal in his support of women's spaces, & pretty forthright about his opinion being based in safeguarding & his position as the father of a young family.

I won't name him, but even my staunchly Labour Party parents agree he's a good, involved constituency MP. They wouldn't vote for him, but they think he's a decent bloke. Does a lot for the local community & stands his round in the pub.

Bit Brexit-y, which I can't agree with him on. Can't find anything else online about him to take particular issue with.

He's probably got my vote for the next election. I'm done with party tribalism & will vote on this one issue, for any sensible candidate.

Charley50 · 06/04/2022 20:01

And not a peep on Channel 4 news. In fact if you only watched Channel 4 news, you wouldn't even know this situation even existed!

Stellaris22 · 06/04/2022 20:09

Boris suddenly cares about women does he? Great. Perhaps he could do more than sound bites and do something to help single mothers, those choosing between heating or eating (or going hungry to feed their kids). Could he increase UC and help women?

It's depressing how people can ignore the cost of living crisis, it's what they want, to distract people from all the misery and damage they've caused.

bingoitsadingo · 06/04/2022 20:21

This is probably the clearest sensible statement on the topic I’ve heard from any politician.

Which is pretty impressive considering it was Boris saying it!

McDuffy · 06/04/2022 21:15

I got a bit tearful watching it. I've only been involved in this fight for 3.5 years but this felt seminal.

Imnobody4 · 06/04/2022 21:17

Article in the Times. Some Tory Mps are raising concerns but also:
But a government source said that privately Conservative MPs had been pushing for the previous government policy to be abandoned. “I have never seen so many MPs lobby against a particular policy than [the trans conversion ban],” the source said.

@nauticant

I certainly wouldn’t dream if calling you a name for the way which you choose to vote/not vote.

This is the message I'm getting from the thread and it reflects what I see real life. Maybe I'm biased but I get the mainstream of the right in the UK saying that you're free to vote for who you want, while in the mainstream of the left in the UK there seem to be plenty of people who say that if you don't vote for our tribe you are a bad person. I cannot express quite how off-putting this is for me as someone who used to lean left.

It's because they really believe it, I think.

The believe that every member of the Conservative Party, all their MPs, and voters, is knowingly pushing for a state that strips normal citizens of money and rights in order to enrich the posh elite, that they are racists and homophobic, that they believe women should be chained to the kitchen sink. They do not believe that any type of conservative approach to economic or social issues could have any merit at all, or that anyone could honestly think so - those who claim to believe these things are uneducated and especially stupid, or fibbing in order to dupe the uneducated and stupid.

It just goes to show really that they are very narrow themselves in terms of their reading and exposure to different ideas.

MangyInseam · 06/04/2022 21:31

@Fairislefandango

ActuallyfrecklesI think he does care, not because his heart swells with compassion for women but because he knows this is a major issue for 51% of the population!

^This. It's strange how many people seem to be of the opinion that taking notice of what voters want is a bad thing. Labour certainly seem to agree with them though.

They believe the only valid reason for a political figure to hold a viewpoint is ideological commitment.

I'm not sure how realistic that is though. Any PM or party leader is going to have their own views on issues. Then there are the views of the other MPs, which they can't ignore. Then there are the views of party members, which they can't ignore. Then there are the views of their own constituents which they are meant to represent and which they need to consider to be re-elected. Then there are the views of the voters in general.

No one in the world is going to be able to have an entire party platform that aligns with their personal views. And sometimes there may be issues where their own views are quite different than those of the party or the people, and they will have to keep quiet about it.

crispsarny · 06/04/2022 21:34

@SelfPortraitWithPterodactyl thank you for your understanding.

crispsarny · 06/04/2022 21:46

@MangyInseam condescending & wrong.

MangyInseam · 06/04/2022 21:46

@TheNameOfTheRoses

That said I agree with them and reluctantly would vote for them as I cannot vote labour or Lib Dem as o usually do this is a hill I will die on.

That’s the whole point.

To ensure that people who normally would NEVER endorse their policies on the NHS/poverty/immigration/civil liberties etc… will still vote for them :(:(

So we will be able to say that we have sex segregated sports (nothing about see seggregated spaces) but we won’t be able to go down in the street to demand more equality at work or to have a vigil or the express issues with the Met re racism/sexism etc…

Great idea in their part.

Turkey voting for Christmas.

Would you apply the same logic to Labour on this? Their goal is clearly to drive away certain voters who normally would vote for them.
PurgatoryOfPotholes · 06/04/2022 21:56

Would you apply the same logic to Labour on this? Their goal is clearly to drive away certain voters who normally would vote for them.

This.

Sometimes I honestly wonder if Labour, the Lib-Dems - and especially the Greens - were infiltrated years ago by undercover agents, with the sole goal of destroying the parties' political credibility. We have a situation where these parties' activists care more about pronouns than ever being in power to effect any of their other policies. It's insane.

Why is Labour not dropping policies like self-ID in order to gain more votes?

MsTSwift · 06/04/2022 21:59

Parties are supposed to listen to voters and represent the majority view. The left leaning parties are not doing this on this issue it’s really really weird. It’s not self Id it’s self annihilation.

liveforsummer · 06/04/2022 22:07

It's the first time I've ever agreed with him - but I guess that's what he's looking for .... however whilst I work 2 jobs yet still can not afford to keep my DD's warm and fed or offer them opportunities that might shape their futures in a positive way, I'm not going to vote Tory anytime soon.

MiladyBerserko · 06/04/2022 22:08

Shrugs. Are women supposed to care about the Labour Party when they have shown their contempt for women?

Boris would have been a fool not to capitalise on the opportunity.

MangyInseam · 06/04/2022 22:09
@MangyInseam condescending & wrong.
Read the kinds of comments people make on threads. They are clear and unequivocal.

If you vote Tory you are voting for stealing from the poor to give to the rich. You don't care about the lot of those who are less well off. Tories believe women should stay in their boxes. Boris wants women chained to the sink. Tories don't care about women. Tories are homophobic. Tories are racists.

It's actually kind of shocking the comments that get made.

nauticant · 06/04/2022 22:17

The subject is popular, it's also in AIBU:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/a4523391-I-agree-with-Boris

AlwaysTawnyOwl · 06/04/2022 22:32

I’ve just written to my MP supporting the governments stance. Please do do the same. Stonewall are organizing a mass pike on to MPs

AlwaysTawnyOwl · 06/04/2022 22:33

I mean pile on!

littlbrowndog · 06/04/2022 22:34

Try living in Scotland. No one to vote. Women. Is anyone who wants to be

Women are no one anymore.

Nothing people. That’s women in Scotland

Needmoresleep · 06/04/2022 22:43

What is it with Scotland. Even the Scottish Tories don’t support Boris on this.

nauticant · 06/04/2022 23:02

The AIBU thread I linked to is instructive. This move is clearly not about causing Labour voters to vote Conservative, although some might. It's about causing uncertainty and dissent amongst Labour voters to suppress the vote. It's going to have some effect although it'll be a while before we see how much.

crispsarny · 06/04/2022 23:06

@MangyInseam I know the comments that are made but to imply that the Tories are innocent, when they continue to fuck over women, children, the poor, disabled, minorities is some next level bullshit. The leader of the Tory party Boris Johnson called gay men tank topped bum boys, compared Muslim women to letterboxes, labelled black Africans Piccaninnies with water melon smiles, also that the problem with Africa is that we are not in charge any more. Tell me what’s wrong with all this?

www.businessinsider.com/boris-johnson-record-sexist-homophobic-and-racist-comments-bumboys-piccaninnies-2019-6?amp

Positing yourself as someone who knows what the fucks going on, calling people stupid & uneducated is all kinds of wrong. You sound like a typical dyed in the wool Tory.

Please tell us more about your extensive reading.
