MP comes out as transgender

A male Tory MP has released a statement on Twitter that they are transgender, and also that a couple of years ago they were raped.
It's a brave statement.

Saying you 'want to be trans' is making a declaration about your state and that you intend to transition. They're just recognising that they need to do something about it.

Like what? Does this mean you aren't "trans" if you don't do anything at all? What do you have to do?

twingirlboys · 30/03/2022 11:39

Gosh, what a life they have lived. If that were me I'd want a clean slate, a new identity and a good reason for everyone to simply understand that everything before wasn't my fault, but due to a very sympathy inducing medical condition.

Datun · 30/03/2022 11:39

@nauticant

If we're going to have a transwoman in the House of Commons representing the ideology to the public, someone like Jamie Wallis might fit the bill nicely.
Just what I was thinking.

In my opinion, they couldn't be more representative.

Let's turn all the lights on.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 30/03/2022 11:40

What does "transition" mean?

MuggleMadness · 30/03/2022 11:40

@80sMum

Poor chap. It was very brave of him to speak out and tell the truth about himself. I hope that will be the beginning of a new and happier phase in his life. I'm thinking that the strain of being an MP is probably not the best thing for him at this time. Perhaps he should resign and concentrate on recovering his mental well-being.

Everyone knows about him now, so there's no longer the stress of living a pretend life. He can be himself, which will most probably mean that "he" will ultimately become "she". I wish him/her well.

Incidentally, I've noticed people have been using the pronoun "they" when speaking about this person. "They" is a plural, so doesn't sound right when used in reference to an individual. Do we perhaps need a new, alternative pronoun that basically means the same as "it" (ie is gender neutral) but refers to a person rather than a thing?

No, we don't.

@fromorbit
Wallis signed up to to reforming Gender recognition act

Reform is used to say made better. How could anybody object to an improvement?
Language bias can be invisable. The act will be changed by amendment.
(Reform is a positive outcome, change sometimes fails)

@DoobryWhatsit

If a person stands for election on job creation or workers rights while offshoring jobs to countries with very poor pay and conditions thats relevant information to the people voting.

If a persons is profiting off prostitution and possibly sex trafficking its relevant if voters depend on their elected MP's act within the existing legal framework and to be honest about their policy on changes to legislation.

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 30/03/2022 11:41

I am very sorry that he experienced sexual assault and blackmail (not misgendering - he says in his statement that he wants to be trans, not that he is now).

I think there are major questions about his judgement and behaviour that are unrelated to the crimes or his gender identity. To be clear, I am not suggesting that his behaviour contributed to the crimes; I am talking about the sugar daddy website and his lies regarding it. He made a choice to profit from the sexual exploitation of women.

Yes.

InvisibleDragon · 30/03/2022 11:42

Just a note of caution on the car crash thing - it's possible that the comments PTSD as a mitigation are a reference to feeling suicidal.

It sounds like Jamie has a lot going on just now. I hope they are able to get support with the hard bits as well as the glitter.

Enough4me · 30/03/2022 11:44

@SparklingConsequences at what point does transition occur, is it a word, a time, a thought, an action?

Is it reversible or irreversible to be real?

If Jamie changes his mind, was he right before, or in transition, or afterwards?

It just seems like deciding whether my favourite food is chips or baked potato.

We know that the PC of gender reassignment applies if you say you are trans - you don’t need to do anything more than that.

Does saying “I want to be trans” also count?

dick27 · 30/03/2022 11:48

Stunning and brave will be trending online soon

Yes.

Horcruxe · 30/03/2022 11:49

From what I've read, I think he needs support.

With the amount going on his life car crash, involved in a sleazy website., PTSD, being blackmailed it might be better if he steps down for now.

If hes that unwell with PTSD that he is crashing a car then fleeing, it's unlikely hes in the right mindset for his work at present.

twingirlboys · 30/03/2022 11:51

The whole sugar daddy/ submission/ sissy thing is related and literally textbook.

As someone else said, let the sunlight in.

Rape is horrific, let's hope they will support women who don't want intact men in their crisis centres etc. I bet no journalists challenge them on this though, once this MP starts the next inevitable phase of their career, championing women's issues.

KatsuKatsu · 30/03/2022 11:51

He could probably do with a break from parliament while he gets counselling. There's a lot going on.

Horcruxe · 30/03/2022 11:52

Despite any bravery he may have shown by his statement he should still have his crimes looked at and investigated as anyone else would.
AnyFucker · 30/03/2022 11:52

I sense a promotion actually

borntobequiet · 30/03/2022 11:52

They'll be in for a rough ride, transsexuals usually get hounded out in politics.

But as a sleazy criminal he’ll be welcomed with open arms.

DomesticatedZombie · 30/03/2022 11:53

There does indeed seem to be a lot going on in Jamie's life.

Thoosa · 30/03/2022 11:53

@Signalbox

He seems to have quite a lot going on in his life doesn't he? Labour will be annoyed. Tories once again the more "diverse" party.
That’s an understatement. Sugar daddy site, car crash, rape, transgender, blackmail.

Who wouldn’t want a holiday from themselves with all that going on?

Who has time to be a an MP with all that going on?

Thoosa · 30/03/2022 11:55

All vaguely reminiscent of Ron Davies on Clapham Common, but times have changed so, as @AnyFucker says, it will have the opposite effect on career.

AlisonDonut · 30/03/2022 11:56

A woman says they were raped and they get ripped apart, and told they are weaponising their trauma.

A man though. What a totally different world they inhabit.

viques · 30/03/2022 11:56

Hmm. Is today a good day to bury bad news?
