To wonder why an MP is lying about womens bathrooms?

TeaKlaxon · 28/03/2022 09:33

Lucy Allen has tweeted that the Barbican has mens bathrooms and gender neutral bathrooms, but no womens bathrooms.

Lots of twitter users told her that was wrong.

The Barbican itself told her it's wrong.

But the tweet remains. AIBU to think that if an MP gets something wrong, they should apologise and remove the lie? Or to think that this is deliberate misinformation to further the myth of women being 'erased'?

If the woman implied to the worker that “women are being erased” because she couldn’t find the female toilet, which isn’t out of the realm of possibility given how quick she is was to rage over the issue, then I’m not surprised she was laughed at given how ridiculous it all is.

The Barbican has male toilets, female toilets and neutral toilets - ie both can use this space.

Literally a non issue.

TooBigForMyBoots · 28/03/2022 19:05

Has the Barbican commented on the tweet yet?

daimbarsatemydogsbone · 28/03/2022 19:05

the concept of the 'main' womens bathroom is a bit of a misnomer.

Correct. They are not bathrooms.

luxxlisbon · 28/03/2022 19:11

Has the Barbican commented on the tweet yet?

Yes, “ We try to be a welcoming and inclusive place for everyone. We have toilets for women, men, and gender neutral toilets, and toilets for people with disabilities.”

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 28/03/2022 19:12

How quick to rage? A woman wrote to her MP. How do you know how quickly she got annoyed?

She asked where the women's toilets were! 'Women are being erased' was her comment to the MP afterwards, after being given the impression there were no women's toilets.

You are putting the cart before the horse. Because a customer formed a poor impression of the business after excrable customer service, you are saying she only received excrable service because she was going to write to her MP about it?

And even if she had made comments about women being erased, it is still incredibly unprofessional of an usher not to direct her to the nearest women's toilets, and thus manage the situation. If the Barbican is employing staff who can't answer simple instructions, then it's a miserable excuse for a business.

So it's a non-story like the Belfast bar in GB News.🙄

So why didn't they usher direct the woman to the women's toilets when asked? Why did they just laugh?

Have they said why their member of staff didn't direct the woman to the women's toilets?

I'm not even going to go into the question of who the "toilets for women" actually admit in practice.

Eh? As per picture further up thread - it shows gender neutral toilets then disabled then men's toilets. That's where I went to the toilet and couldn't find a women's toilet. There were no urinals in the g/n toilets![/quote]
OK. But you said someone came out of the gender neutral toilets and said they were mens toilets. Frankly I am really struggling to understand your point.

@334bu

*Or do you mean she came out of gender neutral toilets that had previously been mens toilets so still have urinals etc?*

I am confused! If the toilets have urinals then they aren't gender neutral they are men's toilets. So she was in the Men's????

I mean I already said up thread that I haven’t been since before Christmas so this isn’t the gotcha you think it is.

I also know which toilets are being referred to, and know which toilets remain gender specific. So I’m not sure what point you think you’ve made.

Found some more people for the OP to accuse of lying. Given how rude OP has been to women on here who want single-sex toilets, I'm not sure why she is so befuddled at the idea that people in theatres with similar opinions might also be rude to women who demonstrate reluctance to use "gender-neutral" facilities!

Trans activists are just so good at showing tolerance.

Tweeter 1: I was at a theatre last year that did this. GN and M restrooms public, W hidden. When I asked for the W’s room, usher told me to use the GN room. Repeated “I need W or single occupancy” three times before she gave me directions. Gave me a look like I had slapped her. I wanted to.

Tweeter 2: Is that so they can report back that no one is using them because people couldn't find them or were being directed to the gn ones? How bizarre though - unless the usher was also having to clean the gn ones?

Tweeter 1: Worth considering, but I think that’s too sophisticated an explanation for what happened. I think that the usher was just unbearably woke. Flabbergasted that another woman who was just as “cool” (e.g. young, leather jacket) as her didn’t share her mindset. 😂

No gotcha at all, genuine question. Gender neutral toilets wouldn't have urinals as only men could use them and you were the one who mentioned urinals.

Franca123 · 28/03/2022 20:12

Last time I went to the Barbican, it was gender neutral with urinals or gender neutral without urinals. Presumably the OP enjoyed using the one with urinals. My entire life, no woman has said to me, that she wishes she could go into the men's and watch them piss into a urinal. This is not being done for women.

mudgetastic · 28/03/2022 20:19

Gender neutral toilets can have urinals

They are for people of male sex on any gender so men none binary males abs transwomen

PierresPotato · 28/03/2022 20:19

Do you know before you get in there?

Firstly I didn’t say the GN toilets in the Barbican have a urinal. But another poster claimed that both the mens and womens toilet were converted to GN. I guessed that if that is the case, the formerly mens toilet would still have its urinals. I don’t know for sure if that’s the case.

But what I do know is some establishments do have GN toilets that have a urinal as well as cubicles.

I haven’t used GN toilets in the Barbican. The GN toilet that had a urinal that I used was not in the Barbican.

The online floor plan shows women, mens and disabled using the usual symbols to denote. I think this is misleading.

Yes, so men have extra cubicles to take a long shit in.

And women have extra urinals to...oh wait...

Similarly unhelpful staff member at the Playhouse Theatre, London last month -

[Theatregoer] Sheila Gray said the toilets 'completely ruined' the show for her and added: 'The front of house person was horrible [saying], "Our toilets are gender neutral. If you don't want to use the urinals, it is your call".

The Old Vic 2019 -

The Old Vic ran a campaign last year promising to add more toilets for women. However, it has instead scrapped all gendered toilets for 'cubicles or urinals'. Under the system, women would use 24 cubicle toilets, that are shared with men. However, men could use the cubicles or the 18 other urinal toilets at the theatre.

No gender neutral should not mean anyone
It should mean anyone of the correct sex
