To wonder why an MP is lying about womens bathrooms?

709 replies

TeaKlaxon · 28/03/2022 09:33

Lucy Allen has tweeted that the Barbican has mens bathrooms and gender neutral bathrooms, but no womens bathrooms.

Lots of twitter users told her that was wrong.

The Barbican itself told her it's wrong.

But the tweet remains. AIBU to think that if an MP gets something wrong, they should apologise and remove the lie? Or to think that this is deliberate misinformation to further the myth of women being 'erased'?

But why doesn't the floor plan show accurately what toilets they have or don't have? Why can't we just solve this now but opening up the published floor plan on their website? Why don't they mark gender neutral toilets on the floor plan?!

TeaKlaxon · 28/03/2022 15:29

@SamphiretheStickerist

Oh, I can find them! As I said, they are further in, further up and not always with all the other loos. Sometimes they have been replaced by the gender neutral ones.

No male loos have been replaced by gender neutral ones. Only women have lost single sex spaces, as usual!

Further in? Actually the gender neutral toilets are further from the main entrances and exits than the women's toilets.

Further up? There's a women's toilet on the Ground Floor and First Floor. The gender neutral toilets are on floor 1.5.

Not always with all the other loos? You mean the way it has always been in the Barbican? When on some floors the womens loo is on one side of the auditorium and the mens loo is on the other side of the auditorium? Are you also pissed off that the mens loo is not with the other loos?

No male loos have been replaced? According to @Franca123 that's not correct - both the mens and womens on 1.5 floor are now gender neutral.

@daimbarsatemydogsbone

How many posters have said they have been in the Barbican and been unable to find the women's bathrooms?

100% because there aren't any public bathrooms at all.

Hmm

@SamphiretheStickerist

a real, identified person who has described her experience in public and been called a liar.

But YOU CALLED 2 WOMEN LIARS, one a verifiable woman, an MP and one of her constituents, who she cannot name for legal reasons.

Based on the facts that you didn't read the tweet in full and that you intuited something or other!

I read the tweet in full.

It remains blatant misinformation.

I said nothing of the sort. I said the Barbicans floor plan wasn't accurate.

Helleofabore · 28/03/2022 15:34

Based on the facts that you didn't read the tweet in full and that you intuited something or other!

Just to be clear, are we still discussing this tweet:

I received this message today: “I was at the Barbican yesterday where there were male toilets, disabled toilets, and gender neutral toilets. I asked where were the female toilets as I am not gender neutral I am a woman and they laughed in my face. Women are being erased.”

The one where an MP tweeted about a woman who had to ask where the single sex female toilets were and was laughed at. And obviously not told where they were because she is under the impression there is none. This tweet?

DdraigGoch · 28/03/2022 15:35

The post you quoted was explicitly responding to a poster claiming that 'many' posters had difficulty finding women's toilets in the Barbican.

And you have claimed that many butch lesbians encounter problems, yet have only referenced one of them.

I'm not denying that Eloise has encountered problems, I don't know who she is so I can't judge. Yet you are determined to disbelieve a woman and call her a liar solely on the basis that you personally were fine. You don't know this woman either, so you likewise can't judge or accuse her of lying.

I'm only holding your posts up to the same standards that you seem to expect of everyone else.

girlmom21 · 28/03/2022 15:40

There are at least 5 posters who've said they have struggled to find the toilets and at least 2 who have said certain toilets get closed off at certain points in the day.

If you don't attend a setting often, or it's your first time visiting, it's obviously a lot more difficult to navigate than if you're there often.

If you know what the layout was like, it's much easier to find the remaining women's toilets if the ones you intended to use have changed or are otherwise unavailable to use.

It's fine if the first time you went you happened to find womens toilets but if you were in an area of the building where there were none, and you asked where they were and were laughed out, you wouldn't know whether womens toilets existed or not. Regardless of what you claim, many people would assume that meant there were no womens-only toilets.

I don't understand why this is so hard to comprehend.

Regardless, I don't understand why the experience of a butch lesbian means that women shouldn't have access to single-sex spaces. Would you then blame that woman if she got insulted in the ladies toilets when gender neutral toilets were available? Of course not.

SamphiretheStickerist · 28/03/2022 15:42

Further in? Actually the gender neutral toilets are further from the main entrances and exits than the women's toilets.

Not quite!

Further up? There's a women's toilet on the Ground Floor and First Floor. The gender neutral toilets are on floor 1.5.

You do know I was not talking about each individual loo against any other. That in general the main concourse, easy to find loos are the ones that have been changed. That is my recent memory. I had to go elsewhere to find a female loo. There wasn't one in the usual places, there were gender neutral loos instead. I didn't spend any of my time counting them, I just needed a wee at two different moments in time!

Not always with all the other loos? You mean the way it has always been in the Barbican?

Aren't we talking about the Barbican?!?!?!

When on some floors the womens loo is on one side of the auditorium and the mens loo is on the other side of the auditorium? Are you also pissed off that the mens loo is not with the other loos?

As I said, when there is a 'bank' of loos it is often the womens that get changed

No male loos have been replaced? According to @Franca123 that's not correct - both the mens and womens on 1.5 floor are now gender neutral.

I had indeed missed that. I don't go into male or gender neutral loos and had missed that one of them had been changed.

That's because I am talking about my recent experience with the changes. And no, I am not stupid, not an idiot! I am a woman who was surprised to see gender neutral loos and no womens loos in some locations.

DdraigGoch · 28/03/2022 15:42

Could whoever was offering to visit the Barbican next week please count up just how many women's, men's, and gender neutral toilets there are in the building? I'm interested to know if there is an equal balance of male/female, or whether the Barbican have merely rebadged the women's toilets while leaving the number of men's toilets intact.

SamphiretheStickerist · 28/03/2022 15:44

I might ask my butch lesbian SIL to do that for us. Smile

It remains blatant misinformation.

Which bit is misinformation? The bit where a constituent asked for female toilets? The bit where the constituent was laughed at for asking? Or the bit where the constituent says "women" are being erased when the Barbican is quite literally erasing (some of the) women's toilets and replacing them with gender neutral ones?

She'll be fine as long as she only actually uses the gender neutral ones... Grin

The GB News story about the bar in Belfast is utter bollocks. The Ladies Toilets in that bar are on the ground floor about 5 steps to the right of the sign directing the Mens and Gender Neutral toilets on the 1st floor.

OP, you were the usher, weren't you.

Next time a customer asks where the women's toilets are, politely direct her to the nearest one instead of laughing derisively, and she'll feel no need to contact her MP.

SamphiretheStickerist · 28/03/2022 16:03

And even a stopped clock tells the correct time twice a day!

Can we just agree not to trot out any more tired tropes, cliches and ad homs ??

@daimbarsatemydogsbone

Why do they have bathrooms at the Barbican? Wouldn't toilets be enough?
Grin

I hate that Americanism. A bathroom is very different from a toilet!

334bu · 28/03/2022 16:06

Do the male toilets ,which are now mixed sex, have urinals? If they do then they can't be for women as well.

SamphiretheStickerist · 28/03/2022 16:06

Then again, loos are a very male thing, aren't they.

Invented by and named after men... The John, The Jakes, The Crapper etc etc. It's been that way since Elizabethan times...
