New business on the block selling organic tampons via post and so on, called Yoppie. This is their instagram.

Text of instagram post:

'Most bleeders know how they are impacted by their period, but unfortunately aren't in touch with their feelings & symptoms in the other phases of their cycle. We are here to change that.'

I just can't stop laughing at this one. Grin

Yoppie is so out there that even the most vehement trans allies of my acquaintance aren’t having it, so, uh, well done Danielle, I suppose? Grin

It takes some doing to get the “proud mum of a transman” mutual acquaintance on my Facebook to dig her toes in and not endorse some gender whackery, but using “bleeders” managed it. Even she admitted it was degrading.

The thing that gets me is that using language like this, in the mediums they’ve used it in is only ever going to come to the attention of a fairly select group of the literate middle classes. In my experience, that’s not a demographic that has a great deal of trouble understanding and discussing menstrual issues. This is all very self satisfied, and preaching to the choir.

If you get into commenting and responding on Instagram (as I foolishly have), it's quite mind-blowing. One commenter keeps popping up over and over every time someone says something like 'women and girls have periods' to say 'not a woman or a girl but I have periods'. Anyone who questions it gets the response 'I have a non-binary body that happens to menstruate.' Confused
I mean, it's not really worth getting into arguments with that sort of person is it?

KittenKong · 17/03/2022 08:06

She will realise when sales aren’t all that. Thinks she is playing a smart game but isn’t really.

Some people need to go to school, I have read the comments that person just keeps coming back with that rubbish time and time again.

I do hope they are not in the UK, I like to think our education system hasn't gotten that crap, altho my son did tell me that sex ed in primary school made no mention of menstruation.

KittenKong · 17/03/2022 08:08

She is Swedish I think and based in London. Speaks 4 or 5 languages fluently (her profile says). I thought Sweden was backing away from all this nonsense?

MarshaBradyo · 17/03/2022 08:10

The only downside is the free extra publicity from this

I hadn’t heard of them before, not that I’ll buy anything but it’s a leg up on exposure for them

‘a body that happens to menstruate’ as if it’s some sort of lottery. Just a spot of bad luck. All these kids waiting patiently for puberty to find out whether or not they have a body which ‘happens to menstruate’.

No. We know who ‘happens to menstruate’. It’s not random.

As I said I think she thinks she's cleaver and trying to reclaim words, using bleeder and you're bloody awesome.

its a marketing ploy thats backfired and shes far too up her own arse to say sorry, so she is trying to spin it as a gender ideology thing to play victim and label all the women who find being called a bleeder offensive as terfs.

she is a fucking idiot.

KittenKong · 17/03/2022 08:15

How can you attempt to recall a word that women have never ever used about themselves - a word that has been used by males as a derogatory term to insult and dehumanise women? She has taken this from men who seem to hate women.

No thanks, we don’t want ‘their’ words. We are not default males, or second class males, or males with smaller feet. She needs to have a serious rethink.

DameHelena · 17/03/2022 08:19

waterlego and Velvet, I can't help reading it like a 'gotcha' or 'I'm smarter than you'. I CBA looking at that person's comments any more, but I think terms like 'narrow-minded' and 'so many people are ignorant' are bandied about.

I came across the same person. Honestly, I think she needs mental help, there’s something missing somewhere to need numerous responses in insta comments, whether that be positive or negative attention, by posting the same nonsensical thing over and over.
MrsTimRiggins · 17/03/2022 09:52

The peak of it was the statement ‘my body […] is nonbinary. It happens to have a uterus but that has nothing to do with my sex or gender.’
I mean… where do you even start?!

KittenKong · 17/03/2022 09:53

‘Ok let’s start small. What sex are you?’

ThatsNotMyGolem · 17/03/2022 10:13

The whole concept of "Yoppie" is tired and unnecessary. We all know what periods are, and what the stigma is that surrounds menstruation. Alienating the target audience is just further stupidity.

IcakethereforeIam · 17/03/2022 10:17

I wish she'd tuck her shirt in, or not. Just pick a side! Stupid bleeder.

KittenKong · 17/03/2022 10:21

That’s so 2018…

I have photosensitive epilepsy so had to scroll off their later post (which was equally offensive and nonsensical) to read the caption.

So tempted to write:

"I have photosensitive epilepsy so feel personally victimised that you chose to ostracise me and others like me with the literal violence of a flashing picture."

To show how utterly ridiculous the principle of berating people who don't change everything to suit a tiny minority of people is!

It's annoying for me when stuff is flashy and I have to look away / it triggers a fit. But you know why I accept it's going to happen at times? Because I am in a tiny minority of people and the world doesn't revolve around me!!!

Basic biology lesson?

I saw this thread when it was first posted and didn't bother with it. I assumed it was another thread on the Always ad. and bleeder was being used sarcastically.

I'm trying to be open minded, clearly Ms Peri is a bright and driven woman. Perhaps a little bit privilidged and sheltered? I can't see anything wrong with trying to be inclusive, assuming it wasn't a cold blooded marketing decision. But there are ways of doing this without insulting the bulk of your target market.

Also, learn to recognise when you've got it wrong. There's no shame in apologising. Oh, and also learn to tuck your shirt in!

You are charitable if you assume it wasn't, given a) the current climate around and high profile of this issue and b) the fact that she has pinned the only two (last time I looked) positive and supportive comments at the top of the comments feed...

IcakethereforeIam · 17/03/2022 11:48

DameHelena, yeah I know. The sun's shining, I'm trying to be positive today. That shirt though! Somebody ironed that!

MarshaBradyo · 17/03/2022 12:10

Just looked at the comments

Hopefully they don’t just get excited by how many are commenting and being a ‘topic’ and actually read and take it in

But I doubt it as there is a huge amount of arrogance in ignoring women
