"Most bleeders know how they are impacted by their period"

New business on the block selling organic tampons via post and so on, called Yoppie. This is their instagram.

Text of instagram post:

'Most bleeders know how they are impacted by their period, but unfortunately aren't in touch with their feelings & symptoms in the other phases of their cycle. We are here to change that.'

I just can't stop laughing at this one. Grin

Before this thread, was anyone else aware of their company? I’d never heard of them - and their name will now be a “no” from me.

timeisnotaline · 18/03/2022 03:26

She has been very successful at putting me in touch with some specific feelings Angry

I am struggling to know whether I am more offended by
A) Being called a bleeder
B) The arrogant presumption that I am not in touch with my feelings in the other phases of my cycle - WTAF?
or C) that there is anything her company can do to change that (other than seemingly piss me off cycle-round)

Me too. It was being called a bleeder that annoyed me first. The TRAs have many worse, and more violent, insults for women, but I’m surprised to be insulted by someone who’s trying to sell me things.

The rest of the message is enraging.

@vivariumvivariumsvivaria it’s so true the be kind thing is so insidious for women. I actually had a couple of boyfriends who disagreed with me. One worked in mental health and was aware of the rather strong and obvious link between sex offenders and cross dressing. I thought he must be transphobic. Now of course I realise he just wasn’t dumb enough to be like “this is kind and progressive so it must be right”. I guess TRA movement is sort of piggybacking on the gay rights movement. And gay rights are fine so i and others were just assuming TRA is the next level of that.

They got absolutely annihilated on Instagram though. Yoppi then made it worse by issuing a video statement which actually began with the word 'bleeders' flashing up on the screen. The rest of it was really more of a justification than an apology. They then pinned two supportive responses to the top (making it EVEN WORSE) and left me aghast wondering what numpty is doing their PR.

When you get something so wrong and get absolutely flamed to death by your customers, you admit you got it wrong. You don't double down. It is rather compulsive reading though!

SirVixofVixHall · 18/03/2022 08:41

@DameHelena

everyone who experiences a monthly cycle. No, fuck that. We'e talking about periods (I believe there is some evidence that men have hormonal cycles too, although they're obviously different from menstruation).

It's really simple.
It's WOMEN AND GIRLS.
Oh, and if you're a woman or girl who doesn't have periods, you can easily infer that this ad isn't talking to you. And you probably won't be offended by it.

I agree with this. I no longer buy Thinx products because they erase women and send emails about transgender children. I have been using Modibodi but I can see they are creeping towards this defeminising language. Women and girls are the ones buying period products, mainly women, as mothers buy them for daughters. A generation of girls are being told that being female is a shameful thing. That if they feel unfeminine they must be boys. I think this is incredibly damaging and women need to vote with their purses by not buying any of this rubbish. “Bleeders…I am not buying it” literally.

Justification, not apology.

That is very insightful, thank you.

I can think of multiple examples where I have deserved an apology but what I got was justification.

It's galling.

I was! I was part of a small test group who tested out their new maternity pads as I was close to having my daughter. They were dire, they didn't end up going ahead with the maternity range in the end I think because the feedback from everyone was so negative. I'm glad now, probably would have been marketed for chest feeders anyway.
@PurgatoryOfPotholes

Because I used to be "Daniella" and used to insist that female humans could be men and male humans could be women

Out of interest - what changed your mind ?
Well, there were lots of little steps.

Some of the big things were:

I started lurking on mumsnet at 21 and started spending a good portion of my online life here. So, initially, I was obviously saddened and disappointed by other mumsnetters' transphobia, and their refusal to understand that they were misusing the word "woman". Grin

But carrying on posting here broke down my own internalised misogyny about being Not Like Other Girls as I realised so many of us feel like that. Also, gender identity theory relies on the idea that all women over 40 who express the slightest doubt concerning it are brain-dead bigots.

The amount of cognitive dissonance needed to post on MN, believing that, when at the same time I hugely value the same women's advice on everything from employment law, relationships, how tohow to handle awkward interpersonal interactions over parking seek advice from older women on everything from know also meant that I

Fuck, posted by accident.

The amount of cognitive dissonance needed to post on MN, believing that, when at the same time I hugely value the same women's advice on everything from employment law, relationships, to how to handle awkward interpersonal interactions over parking is unreal. So I actually read posts properly when women explained their worries. I decided everyone on both sides meant well though and everyone needed to listen more.

Also, hanging out in a predominantly female space online meant I was conscious of just how inconvenient it was to no longer have a verbal shorthand for "adult female human". So imagine my reaction when I saw gender identity theorists taking female.

And finally, overspill threads in AIBU where a pair of trans activists used the word ableist to shut down mumsnetters' concerns for autistic children. Concerns which I, as an autistic woman, already shared, having noted various issues away from MN. At that point, I stopped giving trans activists the benefit of the doubt and read what they were saying with a much more critical eye.

Best description of parking threads ever. Grin

DPotter · 18/03/2022 20:12

Thank you @PurgatoryOfPotholes - that's very interesting

It's been my recent experience that older women 'get' the issues pretty quickly. The concern i have is younger women who have fully signed up to the 'be kind or you're a bigot stance', have a lot invested in that stance and therefore the loss of face potential is high, if they admit / agree with the idiotic situation we currently find ourselves.

@PaddleBoardingMomma

Which one of you legends commented this under her wedding day pic of her and her husband? 🤣

"What song played at the wedding? When an ejaculator loves a bleeder by Percy Sledge?"

amazing GrinGrinGrin

I'm sure we could give her a whole playlist

"She's always a bleeder to me" and "uptown (young) bleeder"- Billy Joel
"You make me feel like a natural bleeder" - Aretha Franklin
"Oh, Pretty bleeder" – Roy Orbison
"Ejaculator! I feel like a bleeder!" - Shania Twain

Super catchy...

I had passive name recognition: if someone mentioned them first, I knew they were a new niche tampon company.

But I didn't have active name recognition; that is, if you'd offered me £50 to name as many sanitary product companies as possible in 3 minutes, I would never have remembered this one.

I suppose I definitely would name them now. Grin
