Velovixen women’s cycling group has drunk the koolaid

So it advertises itself as a women’s cycling group, it’s just a Facebook group. But nice to have a female space where you can talk about labia related saddle issues, etc.

It’s the sort of group where personal posts aren’t encouraged, got to be cycling related. People, don’t do introduction posts.

A new user has done a lengthy navel gazing “hi I’m new to the group post”. Which nobody does. Complete with photo where they totally look like a bloke. And of course in their paragraphs and paragraphs of waffle they say they’re a trans woman.

Some people have started other posts saying they don’t feel comfortable, etc. Such people are getting called terfs, getting banned. Posts from admin saying we are inclusive to ALL women, telling us to be kind. And then switching comments off quickly. I hate being told to be kind. What they actually mean is “shut up little woman and do as you’re told, do what men want you to do “. I haven’t seen anyone actually be unkind to this individual but accept maybe someone has been and it was deleted. Just so pissed off, nowhere is safe.

What got deleted there?

EdgeOfSeventeenAndThreeQuarter · 13/03/2022 16:10

Bear in mind I’m 50 and therefore SO not down with the kids - but I believe it’s American and comes from “yeet them to the moon” - which in olde English would translate as “a swift kick up the arse and send them on their way”.

EdgeOfSeventeenAndThreeQuarter · 13/03/2022 16:11

I posted something very provocative about hill-walking with women.

QuebecBagnet · 13/03/2022 16:11

Think you have to be very careful not to use the “m word” on these threads.

EdgeOfSeventeenAndThreeQuarter · 13/03/2022 16:13

Ah I see now. I stand corrected. Yes, meet whomever you like in a secluded car-park 20 miles from home.

Was the most unprovocative post ever. 😁. Can’t see what guideline it broke. Probably a guideline which means you can’t state biological facts.

@PurgatoryOfPotholes

Was this data disaggregated by sex, or were transmen, male and female people with non-binary identities, and transwomen all lumped together as "trans people"?
For the poverty stat, they did measure both trans women and men (as well as non-binary people) and say the differences were not statically significant (hence the grouped presentation). Trans people of colour are particularly vulnerable.

For the employment discrimination one: it was measuring the attitudes of employers towards trans people in general I think.

I did some more digging for the pay gap one, and found this interesting piece www.ilga-europe.org/sites/default/files/before_and_after_-_gender_transitions_human_capital_and_workplace.pdf

"For instance, a 2008 study found that the average earnings for transgender women fell by approximately 32% after transitioning. Conversely, the average earnings for transgender men actually increased post-transition, albeit only by 1.5%"

Pretty good data point demonstrating misogyny faced by trans women and that trans men can benefit from the patriarchy (at least in this small way).

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 13/03/2022 16:20

In the USA 29% of transgender people live in poverty (compared to about 16% of cisgender people)

Could someone explain to me how large amounts of medical debt will have zero impact on the finances of a group that seems to be disproportionately populated by disabled people, CSA survivors and so on? I'm having one of those days where I keep forgetting that my gender role is to be in the kitchen and to only think about numbers when it's simple arithmetic relating to baking.

extract

I wasn’t “born in the wrong body.” I was born female. But I didn’t like it. So I changed my appearance, at significant monetary, psychological, and physical cost, with plastic surgery and hormones. My sex never changed, though. Only my appearance changed.

Anyone going through this is in store for a brutal process. Yet we now have thousands of naïve parents walking their children into gender-treatment centers, often based on Internet-peddled narratives that present the transition experience through a gauzy rainbow lens. Many transition therapies are still in an experimental phase—as you will learn if you become sick during or after these treatments.

During my own transition, I had seven surgeries. I also had a massive pulmonary embolism, a helicopter life-flight ride, an emergency ambulance ride, a stress-induced heart attack, sepsis, a 17-month recurring infection due to using the wrong skin during a (failed) phalloplasty, 16 rounds of antibiotics, three weeks of daily IV antibiotics, the loss of all my hair, (only partially successful) arm reconstructive surgery, permanent lung and heart damage, a cut bladder, insomnia-induced hallucinations—oh and frequent loss of consciousness due to pain from the hair on the inside of my urethra. All this led to a form of PTSD that made me a prisoner in my apartment for a year. Between me and my insurance company, medical expenses exceeded $900,000.

Women may be voluntarily leaving the group but at least one was kicked out when she pushed back

Do they, aye

Do they explain what mechanisms are at work here? How is this numerical change effected?

I wasn’t aware of their Facebook group but I’ve looked at their website for cycling shorts because I’ve been having issues with getting saddle sore etc. Well I won’t be buying any new kit from them now. Very disappointing but not surprising.

Full disclaimer: I haven't ready this study in full yet, so this is just from a skim.

From the abstract: "becoming a woman often brings a loss of authority, harass-ment, and termination, but that for many female-to-male workers, becoming a man often brings an increase in respect and authority"

The conclusion is open about some of the shortcomings with the study, perhaps there's been more research since then...

QuebecBagnet · 13/03/2022 17:09

They’ve certainly lost my business.

They’re still calling themselves home of women’s cycling and the group is still called velovixen women’s cycling chat. They really should rename themselves.

Cycling UK’s Womens Cycling Facebook group is also open to anyone who identifies as a women. They have an annual Womens Cycling Festival which usually features some young people with interesting pronouns. It’s such a shame because they also have some really interesting women on it too.
Cycling UK have a TW as a trustee which probably explains it’s position.
British Cycling have a TW in the governance structure. BC are completely gender batshit crazy.
Why is cycling like this?

Hoppinggreen · 13/03/2022 17:35

It’s probably the Lycra - I wish I were joking!

Bosky · 13/03/2022 18:08

This woman was banned from the VeloVixen Women-only Facebook Group, for making it an "unsafe space" for "people who identify as women":

Can dog foxes become vixens, then?

Must ask a vet or mammal biologist.

Brevet1000 · 13/03/2022 20:08

The recent joiner had a post about dieting and mentioned using hrt. Someone who I guess hadn't realised from the avatar that this is a trans woman commented with a link to peri / menopausal diet strategies. There have been several women offering advice that could well be inappropriate for this person's physiology.
With reference to the post about the young trans person competitive cyclist, I tried to comment about the retained advantage but it didn't appear. Probably due to FB's auto modding.

What's that I see? A beagle amongst the foxes?

I was kinda hoping they’d done it on purpose! I’m tempted to link to women spec info every time he posts!
