Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Sir Bernard Jenkins standing up for women on IWD - and a bunch of female MPs failing to.

This has just popped up on my youtube feed. It is Sir Bernard Jenkin, in the commons on the International Women's Day debate, pushing back against self ID and advocating for women's need for single sex space. Anneliese Dodds has a beef with him when he refers to her performance the other day. Once again, the betrayal of women by several female MPs astonishes and depresses me. Thank you, Sir Bernard.

Arrggh, typo in the title. Jenkin, not Jenkins!

Well, he seems like a nice man. Thank you, Sir Bernard.

'we must be clear and courageous' - yes.

And a mention of the Cass interim report. He's on it.

I've got a transcript for you, Annaliese.

Spoiler: she gives no definition.

Monitaurus · 10/03/2022 16:03

Wow. He has it , even if most of the labour women don’t . Thank you for spelling it out so clearly. Did the labour MP concerned explain her definition later? Hearing the number of rapists identifying as women is really important, but very scary. ( goes off to search for later footage)

wateronthebrain · 10/03/2022 16:04

I'm not a Conservative, but I think that was absolutely wonderful.

MummBRaaarrrTheEverLeaking · 10/03/2022 16:13

Wow, the number of women standing up to betray their own sex is a bloody depressing sight indeed Sad How do they live with themselves?

Most vulnerable my foot, if we're talking vulnerable let's look at the number of women murdered shall we? How many predatory men get to use that loophole and attack women before whoever she is (no idea) takes some notice eh? Angry

UsernameNotAvailableHmm · 10/03/2022 16:17

Well done, and thank you, Sir Bernard

Igmum · 10/03/2022 16:21

Bloody wonderful. And yes, how appalling to see other members interrupting to refer to the 'most vulnerable' (no rights for you pesky women because you don't win Equalities Top Trumps this week)

Solosunrise · 10/03/2022 16:22

How much less likely is a man to be cancelled for speaking up though, do we think?

JanetPluchinsky · 10/03/2022 16:26

Oh bravo that man!

Do we know who shouted out ‘they’re not the most vulnerable’?

It’s a shame certain sections of society will completely ignore his points because he’s a (presumably) straight white ‘cis’ man though.

Jess Philips MP: "The list is painfully long, but in reality it is much longer."

This year's list of women known to be murdered by men:

@JanetPluchinsky I think it was Joanna cherry.

poshme · 10/03/2022 16:36

Also a good intervention from Peter bottomley about Kathleen stocks book.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 10/03/2022 16:36

That was great. Thank you to Sir Bernard Jenkin and Joanna Cherry, and the MP who confirmed the Dodds quote. Is she just very unselfaware of how confused she sounded?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 10/03/2022 16:37

She was SNP, wasn't she? Anyone know her name?

madeittofriday · 10/03/2022 16:43

Just extraordinary these women prepared to throw women's rights under a bus.

I hate to say it but if no one is going to listen to women about this we need more sensible men like this to stand up.

Can't find this debate on Hansard. Was it on Tuesday?
5zeds · 10/03/2022 16:46

Good to see.

Lifeinthelastlane · 10/03/2022 16:47

That was great. How can AD genuinely believe she did not fail to give a definition in that interview?

DryHeave · 10/03/2022 16:52

Wera Hobhouse @Ereshkigalangcleg

poshme · 10/03/2022 16:53

The person who intervened to say that trans are most vulnerable was Wera Hobhouse who is Lib Dem

poshme · 10/03/2022 16:53

@DomesticatedZombie it happened earlier today so it'll be on Hansard later.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 10/03/2022 16:55

It's today, so probably not up yet. Still going on, possibly.

Just watched Joanna Cherry's speech and she was amazing.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 10/03/2022 16:56

Thank you! Sorry for mis-partying Wera Grin

Ereshkigalangcleg · 10/03/2022 16:57

Also the guy who supplied the Dodds quote gave part of his speech to this and he was good too, immediately before Joanna.
