Shame on Greta Thunberg! Literally removing women from International Women's Day! How about "WOMEN are still being oppressed...for their SEX"?

fuck me I'd be so ashamed if anyone I knew and loved spoke the way some of you are talking about a young woman. Ghouls.

KittenKong · 09/03/2022 10:38

Old enough to address the UN and choose to display the trans sign on IWD I’m a tweet for the world to see - but not old enough to criticise? I’ve only read ‘shut up’ on here (I could be wrong but I’ve not seen threats of violence).

Ereshkigalangcleg · 09/03/2022 10:43

Exactly. Stop babying her, she's 19. She can make whatever statement she likes on social media, and people can disagree and criticise it.

JaninaDuszejko · 09/03/2022 11:14

Those who think the use of gender is innocent please explain why did she use 'people' rather than 'women'?

Fairislefandango · 09/03/2022 11:41

Yeah that's a good point actually.

SamphiretheStickerist · 09/03/2022 11:42

As has been said. She could have made other choices. She chose to tweet on IWD. She got up that morning like any other 19 year old and dressed herself.

Why that hat?

Why those words?

You either agree she has agency or you don't. Stop infantilising her!

I've had some concerns all along about the ethics of promoting a child as your spokesperson and then hiding behind their youth when difficult questions are asked. I'm even less impressed to see the tactic still being used now that the child concerned is an adult.

SamphiretheStickerist · 09/03/2022 12:00

@Floisme That is something some of us have been saying here since Greta first appeared, isn't it?

We've had our doubts about how she is being used and supported, we have wondered how she will transition into a normal, every day adult life that requires she works for a living, whether or not she has support for that. Now she is an adult we wonder if t/when the apparent ongoing support will disppear and whether she is prepared for that.

And we have been called haters, all sorts of names. And here we still are. Allowing her agency, yet wondering how hard she will be let down by those around her, those who pander to her fame>

Ereshkigalangcleg · 09/03/2022 12:03

I remember the same happening with Lily Madigan. Madigan was giving all these speeches and every banal tweet feted etc and the minute any time anyone said anything critical people pointed to Madigan's youth as if "a child" was being bullied.

DadJoke · 09/03/2022 12:24

I'm glad to get confirmation that she supports transgender rights.

SamphiretheStickerist · 09/03/2022 12:55

You just can't help yourself can you?

Everybody supports trans rights. Just as everybody supports all other human rights. Well, if they are in their right minds they do.

But we aren't talking about that, are we?

And yet here you are, just like Greta yesterday, insisting that we cannot discusss women's rights without having to include men.

Why do you do that?

If you could bring yourself to answer a single question make it that one!

crispmidnightpeace · 09/03/2022 14:09

She does what she's told by global leaders. She's been exploited since childhood. Blame the people influencing her... the ones who put her on the global stage. You don't get there on your own you know.

DadJoke · 09/03/2022 16:34

@samphretheSticerist

She supports what transgender people and their allies, including me, consider to be transgender rights, not what gender critical people think transgender rights are. .

I don't insist you discuss women's rights without including men. I can't answer why I do something that I don't do.

You do. Constantly on here.

People love their child prophets.
MyLittlePhonyPony · 09/03/2022 17:31

If my memory serves me well I recall you making a fgm thread all about trans women.

It was an eye opener.

What do you consider to be transgender rights?

Ive never had anyone explain

RufustheFloralmissingreindeer · 09/03/2022 17:37

How do you know what greta supports?

Anyone can wear a hat

@RufustheFloralmissingreindeer

Anyone can wear a hat

Admittedly I sometimes wear a bass pro shop hat that belongs to my daughter even though I have no interest in fishing.

But I think it's a fair bet that considering the day she chose to wear it, along with her age and political views, she is saying that she thinks transwomen should be part of IWD.

DadJoke · 09/03/2022 17:44

@Clymene as I understand it, this is not a women-only forum and I'm not insisting on posting.

Wouldn’t argue with this at all

But its not my point

Lots of people have very different ideas about rights …dad said that greta has a different idea about trans rights compared to GC people

She may well believe that transwomen should be in toilets and changing rooms but not female prisons for example…how do we know what people mean by trans rights if no one explains what they mean

I certainly have some different views from other fwr posters

Floisme · 09/03/2022 17:49

I think it was probably through this board that I read an article by Meghan Murphy that articulated it for me. Up until then I'd felt uneasy without really knowing why.

HellonHeels · 09/03/2022 17:49

@AnneLovesGilbert

Most if not all languages have words for men and women. Not sure why people are fixating on whether or not she’s confusing gender and sex. Women are oppressed, women, not people.

And thankfully there are many women to be celebrated who are fighting for the rights of women and girls, so i disagree with her message on that basis too.

This!

No it's not a women only forum. More's the pity. I spend my working days listening to mediocre men bleating their opinions; it's a shame it happens on Mumsnet too but I'm well aware that men are very uncomfortable with women only spaces.
