Shame on Greta Thunberg! Literally removing women from International Women's Day! How about "WOMEN are still being oppressed...for their SEX"?

These are the sorts of threads that are screenshot by TRA because of how absolutely batshit they are.

Yup @Dyrne.

OvaHere · 08/03/2022 20:10

The use of gender might be a language thing as others have said. I've noticed many Americans (I know she isn't American) use gender as a euphemism for sex even those who are opposed to gender ideology and queer theory stuff.

I think there's less excuse for using 'people' on IWD. Just use 'women' even if your own personal interpretation of women includes males.

'People' is just vague and actually tells us nothing about who is oppressed, why they are oppressed and who is doing the oppressing.

JaninaDuszejko · 08/03/2022 20:13

I suspect the use of gender rather than sex is deliberate because of the much more awkward substitution of people for women. The use of puberty blockers and cross sex hormones has been stopped for minors at the Karolinska in Sweden. I'm sure Greta Thunberg is well aware of the significance of what she says.

Janesmom · 08/03/2022 20:19

Jesus. The amount of hatred on here for anyone who has the temerity to hold a different view is staggering. This young women is fully entitled to hold, and express, the opinion she did.

CowsAreNotGreen · 08/03/2022 20:19

@LondonWolf

She needs to shut up now. She's been allowed to cause more than enough trouble.
What a nasty comment.
CowsAreNotGreen · 08/03/2022 20:21

Comments like "she needs to shut up now" are why some women are too scared to speak up for what they believe. I'm new to this corner of mumsnet but had hoped it was tolerant of people voicing their opinions.

LondonWolf · 08/03/2022 20:28

What a nasty comment.

Boo hoo. She has and I couldn't care less what day it is. Multiple countries have based their energy provision of her shouting and whining about climate issues. A school age child with no science background or qualifications shouting down actual scientists and climate experts and everyone listens and says how wonderful she is?! Absolute joke. Look where we are now, refusing to consider actual practical energy sources because they don't look pretty enough and now dependent on the likes of Putin and yes I know the U.K. only gets approx 10% of our energy from him but we like globalisation on here don't we so I am talking about Europe as a whole.

And hey, guess what? On IWD, I get to say what I want to as well, being an actual woman myself. Don't bother trying to shame me, I couldn't give two toots!

LondonWolf · 08/03/2022 20:32

And I don't "hate" her - stop that hyperbolic twitter-esqe attempts to shame me. It's not "hatred" to be utterly weary of having to accept policy that is completely arse about face and driven by screaming teenagers telling all the adults how shit they are - see also queer theory, CRT, gender ideology blah blah blah.

Unfortunately Mumsnet gets its fair share of trolls and wind up merchants, often with the aim of making the site look bad, Just report and ignore.

The majority of credible scientists agree with her
FemaleAndLearning · 08/03/2022 20:53

Sorry slightly off the op but I had a look through twitter hashtag international women's day, what is with all the anime and cartoon characters being celebrated? Is it a joke?

MiladyBerserko · 08/03/2022 21:02

Why would anyone want to shut her up?
The more discussion, the better.

JohnMcCainsDeathStare · 08/03/2022 21:08

But it is gender oppression - not necessarily sex, particularly before periods. As a fellow ND person I get this. Forced genderification was a blight at school and gender apartied with that.
I don't want to ever have my DSs feel they HAVE to have female friends but that they can without ridicule. I got SO much shit for mostly having male friends - or at least it mostly being boys that tolerated me.

Also, I think that Greta Thunberg is very well aware of her limits unlike some out there.

FUCK GENDER OPPRESSION!

TooBigForMyBoots · 08/03/2022 21:20

Greta Thunberg is an amazing role model for our young girls and women. Feminism is for all women, so is IWD, not just the ones you agree with @LondonWolf.

WarriorN · 08/03/2022 21:54

@Onionpatch

I agree with Ramayquaza

Posters on MN are very clued up on sex v gender meaning, but my years of working in consumer research means I know most of the uk sees them as interchangeable and gender as more polite. Greta's language might not even have two terms.

Also, technically, I think orgs such as the UN use gender to describe the way female gender stereotypes oppress and hold back women around the world depending on the "gender roles" of their culture.

When you read their wording in those contexts, it's absolutely about women as in those settings, men never have that gender role.

No, that's sex
MangyInseam · 08/03/2022 22:16

I think if I was going to speak to an international audience in a foreign language, I'd make sure I was using the right terminology. It's not that difficult to Google and she'll have a lot of native English speaking friends to check with.

Many English speakers consider them completely interchangeable. Here in Canada it is rare to find anyone who realizes there is a distinction and the US is the same. Even among people campaigning to maintain women's rights to single-sex provisions.

MangyInseam · 08/03/2022 22:21

This is fair and I don't have much time for her environmental activism, I think she is largely a distraction and a bit of a sideshow. But it's very unfair to pick her up on those words when many native English speakers don't understand the distinction between them.
KittenKong · 08/03/2022 23:16

@TooBigForMyBoots

English isn't her first language. She has not Literally removed women from International Women's Day because she used the word gender instead of sex.
You didn’t see her hat then - a wee beanie with that weird sex icon on it - the one with the circle and 3 bits sticking out. So that’s man, woman and ???
TooBigForMyBoots · 08/03/2022 23:27

Does wearing a wee beanie with that weird sex icon on it - the one with the circle and 3 bits sticking out change the meaning of the word literally? Does it mean that she is not deserving of feminism and should shut her mouth on IWD?

KittenKong · 08/03/2022 23:34

No it means that I assume she considered her words and decided that ‘woman’ wasn’t the one she wanted to use. So yes, if you can’t even say the word woman on IWD then please don’t…

VelvetChairGirl · 09/03/2022 07:01

I think its a misunderstanding, she tends to talk about the world as a whole rather then piddly little regional things, the TRAs are not global yet, large amounts of the world dont buy into it. Afghanistan has just been taken over by taliban again, her english is not that good when you see her speaking and I know plenty of people who use sex and gender interchangeably and the two are getting more and more mixed up the number of application forms I have seen asking what is your gender male or female. I dont think she meant it as an insult.

KittenKong · 09/03/2022 07:49

She used the words ‘people’ and ‘gender’ - not women and sex. It was international woman’s day (clue in the title).

Maybe she was just using the ‘current language’, or maybe she chose her words not to cause her to be condemned by those who choose to find the words ‘wrong’. If she is on social media then she will understand the issues.

It was one day in the year when women are supposed to be ‘allowed’ to celebrate and take stock, but no - we are people and a gender, Labour can’t quite put their finger on what we are, and police forces/magazines and charities have male bodied persons facing their campaigns in celebration of the day.

CharlieParley · 09/03/2022 09:04

Extinction Rebellion and GT are full on TWAW and do not tolerate any dissenting opinion on that.

But I don't tell anyone to shut up as I fervently believe in freedom of speech, so it's not something I would say to her either.

It does help to know where she stands though.

(As for the comment that she is causing more harm to environmentalism than good, I agree. And trying to incite kids worldwide to despise their parents and grandparents as evil climate despoilers who ruined the planet for their kids may play well in the media but it's not a winning strategy.)

Ereshkigalangcleg · 09/03/2022 10:21

She's got the trans symbol on her hat.
