From Glinner's update - this is brilliant:

If I were watching Nokes' performance, I would think that she is actually not suited to be a chair of any committee. She simply cannot maintain a professional countenance and seems to think that she is superior to the people she is 'interviewing'.

DomesticatedZombie · 04/03/2022 17:14

Completely agree, Helle. I don't actually know what she would be suited to - that towering arrogance would be a major drawback in most roles.

ATeamAmy · 04/03/2022 17:22

I realise that in my typing whilst happy dancing earlier, I failed to thank @IsitM for the link - thank you for making my day.

I also missed Nokes' "Don't talk over me" command, issued whilst talking over KB. It so very much smacks of the lady of the manor talking down to the hired help. I have to wonder if she would have spoken to a man in this way. She is very bad at her job, unprepared for anything except grudge fuelled point scoring, and she can't even do that properly.

Kemi was very clever to ask that question. Well done her.

Datun · 04/03/2022 18:17

I'm seeing a real determination to roll back the years. What with the EHRC talking about all the protected characteristics and striking a balance, and Liz Truss recommending disengagement from Stonewall, and now Kemi understanding that the reason for making gender reassignment a protected characteristic was not so it could be exploited by misogynists, fetishists and predators.

I wonder what they all think about the original legislation and whether or not they feel they've been had.

Yep. Really good to hear JDP asking whether we should look at whether the GRA is even necessary anymore.

I wondered this when the EHRC said they thought the balance was just about right in relation to Scotland bringing in self ID. I think it's finally dawned on them how bad this is for women. Writing a falsehood into law was never going to end well. Now It's impossible to reverse it so keeping things as they are is the best they can achieve.

HPFA · 04/03/2022 21:58

@FunnyTalks

It's almost as if, deep down, people like Noakes know it's all a lie. But they're so committed to the cause that the lie is serving, they don't know how to disentangle themselves. It's much more comfortable to keep lying and be cheered on for lying by all the self identified good people. No wonder they're so uncomfortable around people who are interested in facts.

It really reminds of a friend of mine who used to speak in tongues as a kid at her evangelical church. She knew she was faking it, but it was so much easier to fake it than to sit there wondering what she had to do for god to make it happen to her. And then once she was faking it, there was so much support from her community, she didn't know how to stop.

Her reaction when asked to define her terms was something to behold.
Goatsaregreat · 05/03/2022 07:37

[quote DomesticatedZombie]Holy moly. Nokes talks over Badenoch, and then when Badenoch responds in kind sharply tells her 'don't talk over me'. What an arrogant woman.

Thank you for all the links. Having listened to the whole thing, what struck me is that Kemi Badenoch completely gets it. In addition to Nokes outing herself as the privileged bully that she is, the whole of Badenoch's response highlights Nokes's role in empowering the trans bullies via this committee. Not hearing "both sides", ignoring detransitioners, Keira etc and failing to call out all those openly abusing them. Brilliant stuff.

Helleofabore · 05/03/2022 08:32

It is brilliant stuff.

And Kemi did it in a way that was completely professional. Whereas Nokes was very aggressive from the start. But it was mastery the way Kemi restarted the conversation after Nokes thought she had the ‘gotcha’ or all ‘gotchas’. And then pointed out just how biased that committee was. And yes, Kemi even reminded them that detransitioners are being ignored.

Kemi Badenoch was all class compared to the blunt tool that was Caroline Nokes. Who seems to portrayed a determined lack of knowledge that I cannot believe is anything but contrived. Seeing her in action against her own party colleague, and a minister too, was just so enlightening. She knows what she is doing. I cannot believe that anyone in Nokes’ position would be that unintelligent or uninformed after running that committee all this time.

Goatsaregreat · 05/03/2022 08:52

It's also reassuring to know that there are finally responsible voices being heard in government about this. For so long it's been the men like Cashman, Blunt, Lammy and Starmer with free rein to display their contempt for women and child safeguarding (along with the Nandys and Nokes of the world) and it's so important to finally hear voices of intelligence and reason now being heard.

This.

Hearing Kemi talk about this without ideological zealotry makes all those men sound unhinged.

Datun · 05/03/2022 09:15

And the women who enthusiastically agreed with them.

Imagine what Kemi would say to someone who claimed you cant say only women have a cervix, or that a parliament of 50/50 transwomen and men is fair.

I'd actually pay to see it.

Slothtoes · 05/03/2022 09:31

Thank you Kemi. Sunlight is much needed.

Cc'ing my own MP. Good idea.

Great idea, Slothtoes. My own MP has been hopeless, so I'll also copy him in. KB's contact details:

The contrast between Nokes's sneering tone and Badenoch's calm professional one was so marked. My resolution is to #bemorekemi

Goatsaregreat · 05/03/2022 11:37

Thank you for that Slothtoes. It's time that politicians understand that no matter how awful a government is, so many women are not going to vote for male led parties that sneeringly gaslight women with their not talking about cervixes, rapists in cells with women nonsense. And we note that this government continues to fund groups promoting unprecedented levels of social contagion in children as we're currently seeing via the captured DfE.

Definitely. Kemi is utterly fabulous.
StellaAndCrow · 05/03/2022 14:28

Wow, Caroline nokes comes across as not very emotionally intelligent doesn't she! Thanks for the link to the rest of the interview.

When Kemi talked about when her father died recently he was still worrying about the attacks on her, I briefly thought Caroline was going to be helpful/sympathetic when she started "I'd like to reassure the minister that . . ." she was maybe going to say - you have our support/we understand etc but no she continued:
". . . she's not the only one getting abuse".
I'm sure that made her feel much better.

So combative. And Kemi was so good in pointing out issues about how questions are asked as traps.

Nokes sounds so condescending in that exchange.
And by asking the question whether the other MP felt uneasy she sounded very smug as though she was going to unearth the other MP as a bigot.
