Will female swimmers ever win Olympic Gold again? Thomas aims for top…

Thomas plans to swim in the Olympics.

Thomas, who has applied to law school, now has her sights set on representing Team USA at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. But first she’ll swim in the NCAA Women’s Division I Swimming and Diving Championships starting on March 16 in Atlanta, where she’s favoured to win the 200 and 500-yard freestyle events.

As Disgusted knows very well, the rules only changed recently & 2021 was the first Olympics under the new rules

Come Back after 10 years if the rules remain as they are & then will talk

OvaHere · 04/03/2022 15:32

Maybe there should be a 'Cheaters' category in all sports. Anyone who wishes to cheat roll on up. Most ingenious wins the day - wearing flippers, attaching a propeller to your back, riding a dolphin. Anything goes, literally.

At least it would be entertaining viewing.

I don’t get the TRA argument that “no transwoman has won the Olympics yet so it’s not a big deal for males to be in female sports.” It’s completely disingenuous… I don’t believe if transwomen started winning records and medals all over the place TRAS would say”oh no! This is really serious now! This is impacting on women’s sports. We regret it! “ No, the goal posts would be moved again and the argument would transform to “well they haven’t won every medal so there’s no problem.” We want to get males out of female sports before they win the medals and records, anyway.

Exactly. Every competitive 'woman' swimmer globally could be a man and Disgusted would be telling us we can still pay a fiver and use the council pool so what's the problem? Hmm
Phobiaphobic · 04/03/2022 15:49

@DisgustedofManchester

Checks how many Olympic medals a trans woman has won so far... zero

Okay ... world records.... nope

National championships.... uh uh

Early days, Disgusted. You know that really.
NecessaryScene · 04/03/2022 15:58

No, the goal posts would be moved again and the argument would transform to “well they haven’t won every medal so there’s no problem.”

Plus the inevitable side dish of "transwomen have been winning medals since xxxx, why are you complaining now?"

Kind of pathetic, but when you've got no real argument, you've got to go with excuses and deflection.

OvaHere · 04/03/2022 16:19

I don't want it to get as far as Thomas and others taking the Olympic Podium as women. I know we have this idea that people being outraged will stop it but almost everyone is already outraged about this cheating loophole in sports. It's already the majority view.

It's possible it will just cement and normalise it to the point where all countries start doing it to remain competitive and it gets shrugged away in a sort of 'this is how it is now' because time and money has been invested and results achieved that benefit certain people/orgs/countries.

BloomingTrees · 04/03/2022 16:43

Just wait until the Russians and Chinese catch on to this easy way of winning medals.
They are notoriously competitive at the olympics.

I'm actually planning on going to Paris 2024 (if possible to get tickets) as I missed out on London 2012. I'd be up for wearing some sort of protest t-shirt if there are trans women competing female categories

@TheGreatATuin

Lia is an absolute boon for our side. The US is far behind on the gender debate. The higher Lia flies, along with all the sporting bodies shutting down discussion about it, the faster the US will peak. Laurel Hubbard was bad, but Hubbard was also middle aged and in a far more over looked sport in NZ. I hate to say it but I suspect Lia might help turn the tide in the US faster than any feminist voice might ever do.
Yep. I'm waving my pompoms for Team Lia very vigorously.

Love that.
DomesticatedZombie · 04/03/2022 17:06

Confused. 'What it meant to her to stand on a podium with other women and be counted as an equal'

Thomas will only stand on the podium when Thomas has beaten all the women, because Thomas is very much not equal to women.

bellinisurge · 04/03/2022 17:10

Sharron Davies (who knows what it feels like to be cheated out of an Olympic gold by a drug cheat) says there should be two categories: biological women and open . Let Liar swim in an open category.

stripeyflowers · 04/03/2022 17:22

@StopStartStop

Reminds me if the playground chant "Li-a, Li-a, yer bum's on fie-er!"

Lia is a liar. A man cannot be a woman.

It's going to take phenomenal self-sacrifice from women swimmers to put a stop to this. As every race starts, women placed against men need to sit down and refuse. Their replacements need to do the same. Audience members need to stand and turn their backs every time a man appears in a women's event.

Yes this is what needs to happen. Forget rhetoric.
MoonOnASpoon · 04/03/2022 17:29

'What it meant to her to stand on a podium with other women and be counted as an equal'

Aarrggh.

This is no different from someone claiming to be disabled despite not being, then winning a disabled sports race, then bleating on about what it meant to them to stand on the podium with other disabled people and be treated as equal.

Massively rude, disrespectful, entitled and narcissistic. Clearly not giving one single shiny shite about those who actually physically belong in that category and how they might feel about having their actual, real material identity appropriated and their places taken.

Likewise age categories and some 25-yo claiming to be 12 and then saying how happy they are to share the podium with the "other" kids..

Those examples wouldn't be OK so how can this be?

It must be bloody embarrassing being a gender ideologue and having to bluster on and pretend this makes sense.

Angry

Of course, it would be absolutely fine for someone to identify as disabled and enter the Paralympics so long as not too many won, wouldn’t it?

Back me up Disgusting, you surely agree!
@DisgustedofManchester

I don't get your point. Apart from the fact that you're wrong as MoononaSpoon has pointed out, either you think the competition is fair or it isn't. It is a matter of principle. My daughter is really into athletics - she trains hard. Even if she never wins a national title, let alone an international one, she deserves the chance to compete fairly and have a chance to win, don't you think? Or do you really think males have no advantage over females?
Not one person believes that

“Olympic medals” We have however had DSD athletes, ie to put it simply, genetic men who have been through male puberty but with abnormalities of their physical genitalia , winning Olympic medals at Rio. Gold , silver and bronze to be exact. In the Women’s 800 m Physically and genetically not that much different to a man deciding he is a woman and taking a few courses of hormones.

Thomas has already had his times recorded as records for women’s collegiate events. Records that genetic women will be unable to equal or beat. Track records, then National records, then World records, then Olympic records, it’s an obvious progression, and at every step women
‘s hard work and skill is crushed as they realise their achievements can never be acknowledged officially.

BloomingTrees · 04/03/2022 19:05

I'll see nearer the time, but I was thinking something really boring and scientifically factual like 'male = 30% more muscle mass' * or something.

 • this is a made up fact.
Jackjack0962 · 04/03/2022 19:42

Protest t shirt

mummykel16 · 04/03/2022 20:01

I wish you luck, but these sad acts fight dirty, jobs etc

BloomingTrees · 04/03/2022 20:41

I like the t-shirt, was thinking something more subtle though.
Not worried about my job. I'm lucky I'm in demand and no one cares about all that in my line of work.
