GRA Reform - Scotland
KittenKong · 03/03/2022 11:11

Today I am stepping away from twitter for a little while because I will explode.

Police in the met choosing which sex uniform to wear, and other forces staring the want officers to choose which sex they are with regards to body searches, RICS pretending to celebrate women then dropping the clanger (of course that means women of both sexes), celebrating women Posters with males (who identified as male) women who have dumped on women and honking omissions, the Sarah Everard anniversary and groups like Fawcett pretending to care about women…

🤯

Signalbox · 03/03/2022 11:28

FPFW are threatening court action. I can't read the whole article but looks like they are saying the SG are acting outside of their powers.

Ugh. I'm beginning to hate International Women's Day. It's a festival of smug, empty corporate virtue signalling and gaslighting which only goes to reinforce how little of a fuck society gives.

From The Times:

"Trans men and women can and do lawfully use single-sex facilities. Reforming the act will not affect this."

Is this correct? Can men currently legally access single sex facilities?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 03/03/2022 12:08

Yes it is true that it is legal, but they don't have to be allowed to. In most cases (workplaces and schools are covered by other legislation so it's not the same) left up to the individual service providers to make policy and enforce it where necessary, and people to take legal action against them if they disagree.

NecessaryScene · 03/03/2022 12:16

Can men currently legally access single sex facilities?

Yes, in much the same way adults can legally access under-16 sports, and able-bodied people can legally access the Paralympics.

When category splits like that happen, they're not usually legally enforced - they're just rules.

There are vanishingly few actual laws enforcing that sort of thing, because they've not usually been necessary. Social convention suffices.

Hence the Equality Act only covers single-sex provision as necessary to make clear that it isn't barring it under the general anti-discrimination rules. The assumption was social convention would continue.

Those sorts of things tend to pop up as law only in international contexts - eg requiring separate facilities for female prisoners of war.

Thanks.

JamMakingWannaBe · 03/03/2022 12:58

Thank you for the explanations. So they are just twisting language then to pretend selfID doesn't matter.

So concerned about the future for my DD's.

Signalbox · 03/03/2022 13:00

I don't think there are any laws that make it unlawful for men to use female spaces. Only the option for services to exclude males (including TW) from spaces if it is a proportionate means to achieving a legit aim.

It is mainly social convention that prevents males from entering spaces set aside for female people. And that social convention and the respect for women's boundaries is currently coming apart at the seams

littlbrowndog · 03/03/2022 13:05

I can’t watch it today. 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🥺

littlbrowndog · 03/03/2022 13:06

My country not giving any fucks about women

They even a gender unit SG

OhHolyJesus · 03/03/2022 13:11

Women are fighting so many wars. Actual wars. Physical wars, cyber wars, information wars, language wars.

I'm thinking of all Scottish residents who recognise biological sex today. I've no idea what will happen next, but I know one thing, it ain't over Sturgeon, not by a long way.

WinterTrees · 03/03/2022 13:14

We've seen how social convention works with mask wearing here in England. The minute the rules were slightly relaxed, or allowed to people to make their own judgement, it was remarkable how quickly the balance tipped towards most people not bothering.

I wonder how quickly all spaces in Scotland will just become mixed sex, regardless of which sign appears on the door.

KittenKong · 03/03/2022 13:15

Men will have to take the lead in this one - declare themselves women and target events, activities and spaces where it will demonstrate to these traitors to their sexist how much this will damage woman’s lives.

Girls - demand to have access to the lads changing rooms and teams (oh dear - wee Billy is only 5”2 and seven stone wet through - but he MUST be allowed to play in the school runty team, even if that means the school loses every single match).

Start messing with the rules - play them at their own game.

FPFW threaten court action every time a trans person farts. Doesn't mean they have a case or any hope of winning.

Signalbox · 03/03/2022 13:26

Social convention suffices

This is the crux of it all really. Women are allowed boundaries only by social convention. Once that’s gone…

WinterTrees · 03/03/2022 13:27

Oh grow up SevenWaystoLeave

Here's FPFW's review of 2021 just in case you genuinely aren't aware of how effective they are in pushing back against the erosion of women's rights.

I suspect you are though.

I am guessing evidence for living in a gender will be the same as the public boards act - having a vaguely stereotypically female name on your gas bill but no one will be allowed to check. In addition as there is no definition of a female name I am guessing names such a Kenneth, Patrick and John will be allowed.

Igneococcus · 03/03/2022 14:16

There is also a behind the story type article, although article is probably too grand a word for this:

TheYellowOne · 03/03/2022 14:43

I'm watching Shona Robison introduce the Bill on the Scottish Parliament TV channel. She said that trans people are not responsible for violence against women. I'm wondering if anyone will bring up the list of trans women who have committed acts of violence against women.

KittenKong · 03/03/2022 14:44

See that a load of utter nonsense - my SIL has a foreign name which is actually a boys name in the county of origin (for some reason her parents liked the sound of it and it causes amusement when she meets people where the name comes from).
Mistressiggi · 03/03/2022 14:51

@TheYellowOne how do you find the Parliament channel? I'm searching through Sky but I can't find it!
