Mhairi Black and 'gingers'

order-order.com/2022/02/22/mhairi-black-compares-intersex-people-to-gingers/

I didn't realise Miriam Cates has a degree in genetics.

Anyway, here is Mhairi Black using a term I find pretty distasteful. 'Gingers'? Isn't this equivalent to 'Blondes'? Applied as a descriptor like this it winds me up.

As does her using of people with intersex disorders as a cheap, and irrelevant, point scoring exercise.

She's still awfy young

Oh come off it. That excuse is tedious in the extreme as well. She is 27.

Viviennemary · 23/02/2022 10:54

Whst a nasty piece of work she sounds.

KimikosNightmare · 23/02/2022 10:56

It wasn't actually this that impressed me about Mhairi, though - it was her apparent willingness to speak up on issues that she cared about and be honest, and what seemed like a down to earth attitude - refreshing in a political class that has become so focussed on career and soundbites

You're easily pleased then. Black was always a series of manipulated and fake soundbites.

NotBadConsidering · 23/02/2022 11:05

I have a degree in genetics

Well, echoing my earlier post there are two possibilities. Either you have a degree in genetics but didn’t really understand it and you call Black “sharp as a tack” because you think she understands genetics just as well poorly as you do, or you have a degree in genetics, know that Black espouses shite on the subject, but call her “sharp as a tack” because you agree with the propaganda she peddles in her speech.

Neither are a good look, really.

Abhannmor · 23/02/2022 11:31

Guess I fell for her tell it straight shtick @BlancheB. I do know actual working class Scots who found her a breath of fresh air mind , so I'm not alone.

Abhannmor · 23/02/2022 11:33

Ps the percentage of Scots and Irish with red hair is 12 /13 not 1 to 2. Come on Mhairi...

DomesticatedZombie · 23/02/2022 11:47

Finding it hard to source reliable stats on red haired people. All seem to be guesswork, and putting Scotland at around 13%.

So Mhairi's point was possibly comparing 13% (red haired people) with 0.018% (people with DSDs)? And nothing to do with 'gender' or 'changing sex', anyway.

And in any case irrelevant - in what possible situation does hair colour affect people's propensity to violence or vulnerability to pregnancy, or menstruation-related issues?

This is crap politics.

what can I say? I do have that degree in biology, and you have to resort to insults ...
334bu · 23/02/2022 12:07

Congratulations on your degree, now can you explain how the number of people with ginger hair corresponds to the number of people who, as Ms Black described them, share both male and female sexual organs?

Masdintle · 23/02/2022 12:33

A degree in biology is not the same as a degree in genetics. Perhaps one is just identifying as the other.

The course was Biology, my degree is in Human Genetics

Black of course isn't an "actual working class Scot" no matter how much she might lay on the accent.

I find her repulsive and offensive. I loathe the perpetuating of the idea that everyone in Scotland goes around swearing all the time.

Amortentia · 23/02/2022 13:28

@Melroses

I am surprised at a Scottish MP coming out with 'gingers'.

The dodgy statistics about the frequency of red hair were not the Scottish statistics which are a lot higher.

Yes, as a ‘ginger’ I was thinking wtf, it’s definitely a pejorative term and for someone so concerned not to offend some it seems us red heads don’t count. Plus, where is she getting her facts? Over 10% of the population of Scotland have red hair, hardly a tiny amount.
DisgustedofManchester · 23/02/2022 13:28

BBC says 1-2% of the population are giner
www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-24331615

Intersex is estimated at between 1-2% in numerous pieces including the one below and Amnesty International

www.plannedparenthood.org/learn/gender-identity/sex-gender-identity/whats-intersex

the much lower figure applies only to patients with atypical genitalia which is only a subset of DSD people.

If people have links other that to twitter [laugh] ....

That’s the global figure. Scotland is the nexus point for the red hair gene as we are in the middle of all the countries that carry this gene.
WinterTrees · 23/02/2022 13:36

I took 2 goes to pass O level maths, but even I can work out why the percentage of the WORLD population of redheads is likely to be lower than the UK, or Scottish percentage

www.dsdfamilies.org/application/files/3015/4927/3142/Brief_Overview_of_differences_of_sex_development.pdf

I am not sure how any MP cannot see that some people being born with a DSD, is relevant to trans gender people having the feeling that their gender identity is different from their perfectly normally sexed body.

Mhairi Black and 'gingers'
ScrollingLeaves · 23/02/2022 15:17

Is not relevant

tiktok · 23/02/2022 15:52

I'm not especially worried about ginger/gingers....it's informal but not derogatory. I do see red (ha!!!) at MB's speech though, as she knows the incidence of intersex/dsd is not 1-2 per cent. She's said it before, and she has been told it's wrong several times on Twitter and why. She has no excuse for using this lie again. Even if intersex was 10 per cent, though, it would have nothing to do with trans, which is an internal feeling and not a medical or physiological condition. And she knows that, too, as she has had it explained a few times.

I cannot bear her.

DomesticatedZombie · 23/02/2022 16:21

Yes, Mhairi is talking through many layers of rubbish.

It's a ridiculous interpretation of the term.

Tiresome. A sort of condensed gish gallop. Where do you even start with such a layer cake of bad-faith bullshit?

Do you have any peer reviewed links which state that 1-2% of people have DSDs, DOM?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 23/02/2022 16:29

And Planned Parenthood and Amnesty International have repurposed themselves to be trans lobbyists.
