Argh I am pretty fluffed off about this cancellation actually and had hoped that for once - FOR ONCE - someone might talk through things in good faith and find some common ground, whether third spaces or relinquishing of certain words but support of better health care and medical research on long term mental and physical health. I hope the MPs discussing GRA reform today can see what has happened and how we have TRIED to discuss the issues reasonably but the other side won’t even meet halfway.

Total coward. As soon as Lavery realised that Helen Joyce was going to wipe the floor with Lavery - despite Lavery's being a Top Debater at Cambridge -- Lavery got frit. Aw shame.

And then predictably had a very un-Cambridge like temper tantrum.

Lavery might aspire to be a woman, but the only female Lavery is convincingly impersonating at the moment is Violet Elizabeth Bott. "I'll thcweam and thcweam and thcweam until I'm thick!"

The second debate in April that hasn’t been cancelled with Grace is with Julie Blindel. Venue TBC. Fucking Hell.

I don't understand. I thought that people with professorships were intellectual heavy weights?

If someone could pretend to be an intellectual I suppose they could pretend to be anything.

I have just snorted my tea reading about Lavery's meltdown. Haven't laughed so hard in ages, thanks Prof!

I was looking forward to this too. I don't know much about Grace Lavery though, so perhaps I would have been disappointed about the quality of the debate.

In the UK! GL is not in the UK

In the US you can be a mediocre, junior, academic and you get the title - every "teacher" at a college or University is called 'professor'. UK Profs have to be earned.

What do you reckon? Another backing-off?

There's a joke in there about "cat" and alternative nouns, but I'd be a fool to make it.

I think it's highly likely that Lavery will pull out of the Bindel one too, but if I was Lavery to be honest I would be much more scared of a debate with Helen Joyce - she is clinically rational, hugely knowledgeable about this topic, and looks like someone who would be very hard to throw off with trolling. Those are not quite so true of Julie.

Fascinated by the method of communication here from GL. Would anyone who stood by the courage of their convictions do this - or hand over responsibility for it to such a seemingly vulnerable person?

If this person's troubles are genuine they have my sympathy, but we all have things going on in our lives apart from this. Why would this person's 'trauma' be any more relevant than anyone else's in the scheme of things? This is dog ate my homework/ don't hit me I'm wearing glasses stuff that only goes to show how silly these tactics are.

Hopefully this means the adults are back in the room here.

University education in America costs a fortune, especially places like Berkeley, so I suppose it comforts people that everyone who teaches them is a professor. They're really getting their money's worth. When I was at university there wasn't a professor who wasn't at least in his or her mid-fifties.
