Jennifer Swayne has been arrested on charges of vandalism, ‘hate crimes’ and public order offences. Police searched her house and removed several sheets of stickers.

@barleybadminton

I am outraged by everyone who gets treated like that. I have been involved in social justice for several marginalised groups through my career, and personally, for decades.

Good, but that has not been the response to this by most people has it. I don't think I've seen anyone gender critical saying it is an outrage that the police routinely treat people like this, it's been all it only happened because she's a woman, or it only happened because she's gender critical as if her poor treatment is some unique outrage based solely on her politics. It's not, as you seem agree, and claiming it is undermines the way the police treat other groups.

I honestly don't know which website you're reading but it's not this one. The women here are the bones of the social justice movement you're so blithely appropriating. There are an enormous range of women here, many of whom have fought for a range of causes - for disabled rights and racial justice, against nuclear weapons in the 80s, against homophobia and section 28, for marriage equality, for abortion rights, in the class and industrial disputes of the 80s.

The irony of you not being able to see these women who are passionately involved in all of these things including their intersections with feminism is actually blowing my mind a bit.

White middle class women is all you will ever see if it's all you ever want to see I suppose. It's hugely insulting to all of us, but particularly to those of us who are not the bogeyman you have devised so you can hate us.

This thread IS ABOUT THIS WOMAN AND THAT IS OK

@TurquoiseBaubles

Having said that, should we really be interacting like this? I presume Barley is getting something out of it, I hate to think what. I know we are continually educating lurkers, but the thought of the satisfaction some people are getting out of some of these threads are making me feel a bit bleurgh.

I wholeheartedly agree.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 25/01/2022 20:21

@justaftb

Could someone give Barley a job because he clearly has too much time on his hands.
I agree too, @TurquoiseBaubles and @Alekto.

I suspect it's not time that Barley has on his hands. I expect it's something far more boring. It always is.

Oh yes.
Ereshkigalangcleg · 25/01/2022 20:36

some groups far worse than others.

Like disabled people of either sex, wouldn't you agree?

I'll take it that you don't think disabled people are a marginalised group, then, barley.

The Gwent Police and Crime Commissioner has helpfully posted this collection of statistics on twitter.

Enough4me · 25/01/2022 20:37

I just think Barley would like to tell us to talk about other things or STFU, best ignored.

Are there any updates?

Mollyollydolly · 25/01/2022 20:43

Gwent Police have issued a statement. It doesn't seem to be any different from what we've heard so far. Only difference I can see is that they offered her transport home. Maybe it never entered their head she didn't fancy being bundled in the back of a van again?

Artichokeleaves · 25/01/2022 20:43

Perhaps we could locate the one pure righteous woman we could all agree is free of any stain of sin such as being of the wrong class (with middle being the cardinal sin and almost a capital offense), wrong state of ableness, wrong race and skin colour (white is as bad as middle class), wrong beliefs, wrong politics and wrong voting habits, and keep her in a glass case somewhere for posterity.

Dickens was taking the mickey out of this sort of puritanism and snobbery 200 years ago. Anyone else watching 'Suffragette' this evening and thinking bloody hell, nothing's changed has it?

I will look forward to the evidence that sharp objects were behind the stickers, and to hearing a judge discuss whether those stickers were likely to cause illegal distress and offense.

Frankly I find many of the political lobby words such as 'cis' and 'cervix haver' exceptional offensive and distressing, but somehow I doubt they're illegal either.

MrBlobbyLivesNextDoor · 25/01/2022 20:58

We published a post on one of Twitter accounts on Friday 21 January, asking the public to not remove posters, including those containing offensive material, in the city after sharp objects had been found behind them.

I presume they will be providing evidence that this has occured. As previously it seems to be something that, on further investigation, never happened at all.

Enough4me · 25/01/2022 20:58

Do they really think she stuck glass and pins behind the stickers or just trying to inflate her 'crime'?

OldCrone · 25/01/2022 21:00

We published a post on one of Twitter accounts on Friday 21 January, asking the public to not remove posters, including those containing offensive material, in the city after sharp objects had been found behind them.

Did the police actually find these sharp objects, or did someone just report to them that there were sharp objects behind the posters?

yourhairiswinterfire · 25/01/2022 21:02

Me too. Would like to know if the police have seen these ''sharp objects'' themselves, or if they're just taking the word of MRAs (who have been caught lying about this shit before.)

Someone pointed out on twitter (see if I can find the link) that Jennifer has severe arthritis in her hands, and getting the stickers/posters up is hard enough, so her being able to fiddle and fanny around getting ''sharp objects'' behind them is unlikely.

And if there was any evidence that she'd done this, she'd be facing something a lot more serious than criminal damage and hurty words charges, surely?

We published a post on one of Twitter accounts on Friday 21 January, asking the public to not remove posters, including those containing offensive material, in the city after sharp objects had been found behind them.

What I notice here, is that they actually don't say what "offensive material" contained the alleged sharp objects. Could well have actually happened, but been completely unrelated to Jenn

Ereshkigalangcleg · 25/01/2022 21:08

12 violent crimes

All sticker based.

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 25/01/2022 21:22

This charge of displaying threatening or abusive writing likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress seems very selective in application.

“We published a post on one of Twitter accounts on Friday 21 January, asking the public to not remove posters, including those containing offensive material, in the city after sharp objects had been found behind them.

“This public safety message was intended to make the public aware of the dangers of potentially removing a poster, after glass and pins had been stuck behind the posters.

“We would reiterate that if anyone finds such a poster that they leave it to the relevant authority to remove it safely rather than risk injury.”

I can't even figure out how you would sandwich sharp objects between the curved surface of a lamp-post and a sticker, without ripping the sticker itself as soon as you put it up. I am far too young to have arthritis and I don't think I have the manual dexterity for this kind of feat!

I think barley does a terrific job. We know from a recent thread there are plenty of lurkers who read everything. barley lays it all out there, the whole ideology, the whole strategy, the whole misogyny, plain as day for all to see. Thank you barley, sincerely.
Freeformation · 25/01/2022 21:49

I don't do twitter, but can somebody post on the statement thread that her husband was led to believe during the search that somebody would ring when she could be collected. Also note that Jen is a traumatised person and the implication that she was politely asked if she wanted a lift home is untrue. She was taken to the station flat on her back with her legs in the air with absolutely no dignity. The Gwent Police statement is a disgrace.

Mollyollydolly · 25/01/2022 21:52

It is an absolute disgrace. And to imply she was placing sharp objects, that urban myth probably goes back to Mosley's time. If they thought this would make things better. I'm amazed I can still be shocked, yet here we are. Hope it goes to court, hope heads role.

Freeformation · 25/01/2022 21:58

They didn't ring her husband BTW.

Freeformation · 25/01/2022 22:06

Also they didn't mention the book and notes in their statement

It doesn't need Sherlock Holmes to work out what's happened here, does it. Good grief.
