Jennifer Swayne has been arrested on charges of vandalism, ‘hate crimes’ and public order offences. Police searched her house and removed several sheets of stickers.

Well those are the politest feminist stickers I think I've seen!

fromorbit · 24/01/2022 17:19

I am thinking maybe we should organise a stickering demo in Newport and dare Gwent Police to arrest everyone.

Thus far the police will bully lone women activists, but when we get together they usually get scared.

Not much on those stickers that users here haven’t said a thousand times @Quetiapina!

Welcome. You have a lot of support here.

You can tell by the desperateness of the smearing happening on this thread that there is an urgent need to discredit you - a good sign that you’re making an impact 💜💚🤍

Hope you’re doing ok.

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 24/01/2022 17:30

Welcome, Quetiapina! Those stickers don't seem to have any visual representations of guns on. The TRA ones do, and no-one ever bothers them!

Maybe that's the key here.

barleybadminton · 24/01/2022 17:30

@PurgatoryOfPotholes

Of course I don't think it should be a crime, and I think the police should/could have shown lenience here especially given recent events (presuming we know the full story of course).

But criminal damage is a crime, plenty of other people have been prosecuted for stickering and flyposting, I fail to see why gender critical people should be exempt from laws that apply to everyone else.

Have there been any prosecutions for Brexit stickers, Remain stickers, Indy ref stickers, anti-vaccination stickers (those are everywhere), or generic My Name Is [graffiti tag name] stickers?

If these prosecutions are such a normal part of life, why do local clubs and DJs place highly traceable stickers with their names, addresses, and details of events?

I'm not sure if this resulted in prosecutions but there have certainly been arrests: www.thesun.co.uk/news/14716974/woman-screams-breaking-arm-police-lockdown/

Most of the time you wouldn't hear about it because it would be dealt with by an on the spot fine or caution. And whilst the businesses or events they are prmoting can be found liable it is difficult to prove they knowingly put the stickers up - though Camden Council did threaten record company bosses with jail if they continued using illegal flyposting to advertise in the borough: www.theguardian.com/uk/2004/jun/02/ukcrime.artsnews

Most people don't get caught because if you stay out of the way of CCTV and don't do it in broad daylight (and don't boast about it on the internet) then it's unlikely you will ever get nicked for it - it's not really a police priority unless it is done on scale. But it's a risk, and one to be aware of if you want to go out stickering. If a copper sees you doing it you will almost certainly be arrested.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 24/01/2022 17:34

Great to see your spirit is undaunted @Quetiapina Thanks

barleybadminton · 24/01/2022 17:35

How about it, Barley? Should this be a hate crime?

No absolutely not. I presume there were more stickers than just DV one however.

(and as it happens I don't particularly like hate crime legislation)

TheWeeDonkey · 24/01/2022 17:36
This is an article detailing the misogynistic stickers that can be seen around Cardiff, just Up the road from Newport.

And yet a disabled woman who only posts feminist posters not mentioning a single word beginning with T is hauled into a police station and held all night, house raided left to get home alone at 3:30 am.

genderisharmful.substack.com/p/cardiff-has-a-problem
I've just got round to reading Men Who Hate Women by Laura Bates, it's a tough read but I can see parallels here, the self absorption and blaming of women and the excusing of violence and threatening behaviour. Its scary, really scary.

ArabellaScott · 24/01/2022 17:36

Quetiapina I hope you are okay and recovering. Absolutely shocked by the police's treatment of you. Flowers

How about it, Barley? Should this be a hate crime?

That reminds me of a poster who was accusing everyone of bi-phobia, left right and centre, for believing in soul mates.

You don't really understand the suffragette spirit, do you badminton?

Unsurprisingly.

@CompleteGinasaur

You really are a vicious little pointless weasel, aren't you Barley?
I'd actually say I'm the only person on this thread giving her and any other sticker people some good advice.
MrBlobbyLivesNextDoor · 24/01/2022 17:43

It's taken pages but you've finally committed yourself. Well done.

See, it wasn't so painful to admit that men murdering women is a bad thing, was it?

Carry on like this, and we might have you boldly asserting that women aren't their husbands' property by the end of 2022.

Datun · 24/01/2022 17:44

There are some men who are just fuming at women's propensity to support one another.

They want to stop women doing things they don't like, spending money they shouldn't spend, and staying things they shouldn't say.

And they can't stand the female solidarity which encourages female emancipation.

UltraVividLament · 24/01/2022 17:44

I'd actually say I'm the only person on this thread giving her and any other sticker people some good advice.

Ha, of course you think that. But you have an entirely different motive for your "advice" than the majority here...

MrBlobbyLivesNextDoor · 24/01/2022 17:45

Your lawyer is weeping into their coffee reading this post.

I suspect the police will be weeping into their coffee when they realise they don't have the resources or man power to arrest everyone. Your faux concern is noted however.

Datun · 24/01/2022 17:46

I'd actually say I'm the only person on this thread giving her and any other sticker people some good advice.

Wanting women to STFU by administering preposterous warnings, isn't 'advice'.
