In thrall to stonewall law as parts of the police are, barley, I don’t think that combing through digital records to try to identify anonymous women, find their locations, match them to the correct police force, then try to pre evemptively arrest them on a charge of conspiracy to sticker would figure that highly in priorities.

But then, I have a feeling that the reality you occupy and the one I do are very different.

I wouldn’t propose to test out whether they could be bothered to stir themselves to see if any of your sly threats over the extended time you’ve been here (one way and another)) would reach a threshold of communication intended to cause fear and alarm, because that would be silly

barleybadminton · 24/01/2022 16:51

@ArabellaScott

A conviction. For stickering. Is that instant gulag, or is there a chance one would get just a few years in prison for good behaviour?
No probably just a small fine, assuming there were no aggravated circumstances.

- the political content of each sticker
- the political leanings of the sticker

Processing these for a person is considered sensitive personal data

What safeguards are required for sensitive processing?
If you are carrying out sensitive processing based on the consent of a data subject, or based on another specific condition in Schedule 8 of the DPA 2018, you must have an appropriate policy document in place.
This document must explain:
• your procedures for ensuring compliance with the law enforcement data protection principles; and
• your policies on the retention and erasure of this data.
You must retain this policy from the time you begin sensitive processing until six months after it has ended. You must review and update it where appropriate and make it available to the Information Commissioner upon request without charge.
So, to recap, sensitive processing must be:
• based on the consent of the data subject; or
• strictly necessary for the law enforcement purpose and based on a Schedule 8 condition.

Sorry the source is ICO website

@feellikeanalien

So when Jess Phillips next stands up in parliament and reads out the list of women who have been murdered will the old bill be waiting to collar her for a hate crime?
You seem to be confusing the right to free speech with the right to damage property which doesn't belong to you.
Ereshkigalangcleg · 24/01/2022 16:54

Inciting people to kill gender critical feminists is already against the law, it's surprising it isn't acted on more often.

girafferafferaffe · 24/01/2022 17:02

What the fuck ....

Yes. This is not going to stop.

The compare and contrast list is going to be really loooong.

The never ending threats, of actual violence, plus the, er actual violence of transactivists against women vs a disabled woman with some 'women against male violence stickers'.

It's time this outright gleeful misogyny against women was tackled.

Let's have it.

ArabellaScott · 24/01/2022 17:02

@WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles

Gosh imagine if women were caught in possession of something really deadly like a label maker.
can't get a label maker without written permission from the man of the house.
PurgatoryOfPotholes · 24/01/2022 17:04

Of course I don't think it should be a crime, and I think the police should/could have shown lenience here especially given recent events (presuming we know the full story of course).

But criminal damage is a crime, plenty of other people have been prosecuted for stickering and flyposting, I fail to see why gender critical people should be exempt from laws that apply to everyone else.

Have there been any prosecutions for Brexit stickers, Remain stickers, Indy ref stickers, anti-vaccination stickers (those are everywhere), or generic My Name Is [graffiti tag name] stickers?

If these prosecutions are such a normal part of life, why do local clubs and DJs place highly traceable stickers with their names, addresses, and details of events?

yourhairiswinterfire · 24/01/2022 17:06

You seem to be confusing the right to free speech with the right to damage property which doesn't belong to you.

Well no, they're quite clearly talking about the ''hate crime'' part, not the vandalism (or whatever) part.

The police seem to think that: ''3+ women killed by men each week. Domestic violence kills'' is hate speech.

EmbarrassingHadrosaurus · 24/01/2022 17:08

Just blanched as I thought about children's Make Your Own Sticker sets. Or having a pair of scissors to cut up paper - I can hardly breathe for the number of potential crimes I represent by items that are co-present with me.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 24/01/2022 17:09

@PurgatoryOfPotholes the museums here give you a sticker when you go to an exhibition. Right enough, I hadn't thought of that.

feellikeanalien · 24/01/2022 17:10

barleybadminton So why is this lady being charged with "hate crimes" as well as criminal damage?

SamphiretheStickerist · 24/01/2022 17:11

You seem to be confusing the right to free speech with the right to damage property which doesn't belong to you.

Well, the supposed reason for arrest was hate crime related. So...

CompleteGinasaur · 24/01/2022 17:12

But... if stickers are illegal, how can I tell some poor ignorant passerby what my pronouns are, Barley?

CrossPurposes · 24/01/2022 17:12

You mean like this? (Spot the reason why I might have taken the photo.)

It is. Oddly enough this is never 'malicious communications' though. Apparently it's not what you say or what it means, it's merely the lack of power in who you are combined with the importance of who you say it to. Yay the right side of history, what progress, what enlightenment.

I'm increasingly thinking I'm going to have to find a race horse to walk out in front of. That seemed to help the situation last time women were really being stamped all over in the UK.

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 24/01/2022 17:13

The street signs and bus stops near the local primary school are often decorated with "Excellent Work" and "You're a Star" stickers.

I thought it was cute, but the kids in year 5 and 6 will be over ten, the age of criminal responsibility in England, so I'm calling the police now.

Ah, good spot. I'd missed the tangent I was being led down.

How about it, Barley? Should this be a hate crime?

BeyondShrinks · 24/01/2022 17:19

I wanted to tell you J - while I am sans real name - a relative of mine was arrested by Gwent police for DV/D&D. They, a vulnerable adult, were also released in the middle of the night, however GP took them back to their home!

Just wanted you to know that there is a discrepancy in their treatment of you vs an actual violent offender.
