Jeez. All the evidence that he has should be sent straight to Liz Truss.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 28/12/2021 12:00

Damning. This isn't my idea of what a charity working with a particularly troubled and vulnerable group of children and teenagers should be doing. I thought when it was first set up it was primarily supporting parents, or families, meaning parents as well as children. Now I get the impression parents are held at arms' length.

ArabellaScott · 28/12/2021 12:21

Who regulates this charity?

Whatwouldscullydo · 28/12/2021 12:23

This is one charity where I wonder what on earth has to happen before its shut down.

The data leak where staff were having private WhatsApp convos about children was bad enough.

We aren't allowed at work to discuss customers over WhatsApp. Even on the work group WhatsApp.

Whatwouldscullydo · 28/12/2021 12:25

Emails between staff would also be a no too.

FrancescaContini · 28/12/2021 12:28

Wow. This is deeply worrying and very sinister.

Thanks for posting this.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 28/12/2021 12:46

@ArabellaScott

Who regulates this charity?
Charity Commission, I assume. It is a registered charity.

The barefaced cheek of trying the Charity Commission to de-register the LGB Alliance while also carrying on like this is really quite breathtaking.

One of the most chilling things I came across was a suggestion on their podcast that if parents are not fully supportive of a decision to transition that “family isn’t blood” and that children should create a “misgendering jar” at home so that they can “monetise pain”. No wonder parents are terrified about what their children are being exposed to.

WTAF?

DisgustedofManchester · 28/12/2021 13:17

Whats strange about this blog is that many of the so called 'facts' have been repeated many times by gender criticals for years. Case in point about the 'chat room' where a moderator offered to send a binder. This must be three years old now and has been compeltelty debunked. GCs revive them with 'wishes to remain anonymous. How convenient. Even my own anecdotal experience shows this has happened to about ten different kids so far, all with anonymous parents. How remarkable...

Jesus. Not to mention the forcing of a link between pain and financial reward.

That's why I recommend he sends the evidence to Liz Truss. Let the investigations begin. If they haven't done any of those things, then they will be able to disprove the allegations.
WaverleyOwl · 28/12/2021 13:27

Does anyone think that all charities should have an expiration date, and that if they are still needed and are still following their original mission, they should have to prove this to the Charities Commission to gain charity status again?

DoubleTweenQueen · 28/12/2021 13:37

Good idea. A lot if big 'charities' are little more than a self-serving big business and political machine.
DoubleTweenQueen · 28/12/2021 13:39

@Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g. Yes - my view if the GoodLaw project has also nosedived due to their support of this group.

I wonder how many members and donors are aware?

highame · 28/12/2021 13:40

Tell you what Disgusted why don't both GC people and TRA's start provide evidence, statistics and dates to back up their claims. I'm all for that.

Nice to see you here, always a joy

VestofAbsurdity · 28/12/2021 13:42

Remarkable that Mermaids are taking the LGBA and Charity Commission to Court over the fact the LGBA has charitable status, Mermaids are the ones who should be in the dock and in a criminal court.

Artichokeleaves · 28/12/2021 13:50

This. Bring it on, let's go. If all this has been maliciously faked then I for one really want to know and for it to be all out in the open. And exactly the same too if it's true.

A couple of years ago some of the young TRAs started muttering about whether SG was a suitable person to be leading Mermaids, given that she is not trans herself. The fact that she has single-handedly changed the landscape on this issue in the UK and also had a voice internationally through WPATH didn't seem to count for as much. She took her deeply troubled eldest child to the US at the age of 12 so the child could get cross-hormones and then she took the child to Thailand just before child's 16th birthday so child could have sexual reassignment surgery on the birthday, youngest age possible at the time in Thailand (now 18 as a direct consequence of this case). SG has presided over an enormous expansion of Mermaids and she and her staff have done their level best to put pressure on the staff at the Tavistock to fast track children onto puberty blockers and cross-hormones, as attested by ex-GIDS staff. She is on record as saying that she doesn't see why children under 16 can't go on cross-hormones in the UK. Now we find out Mermaids is handing out binders to children behind their parents' backs.

A lot of the staff and volunteers at Mermaids are trans or non-binary. I wonder if SG is worried that eventually she will be ousted for not being trans or NB herself, and is doing everything she can to keep in with her staff and trustees. Surmise, but it would explain a lot.

rogdmum · 28/12/2021 14:00

What, is someone actually trying to say Mermaids don’t provide a free binder scheme? What an odd thing to deny given how open Mermaids are about the scheme.

Here’s a mod in the Youth Forum reminding adolescent girls about the scheme.:

SG sounds like a safeguarding nightmare.
Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 28/12/2021 14:07

I do wonder about her ability to run a fast-expanding charity with a very large budget and a complex brief, working with a particularly vulnerable client base. She used to look after the IT for a Citizens' Advice Bureau branch. No qualifications in finance, law, HR, psychology or any other scientific subject, any branch of health care, social work, public policy or any other relevant area. And then of course Mermaids had a massive data protection fail, the one area she might have been assumed to know something about from her previous working life.

Anyone who expresses a gender critical opinion knows they risk being banned from social media, reported to their employer or client(s), subjected to verbal abuse and threatened with rape and murder.

It really is a complete mystery why such people would choose to remain anonymous, isn't it?

TheWeeDonkey · 28/12/2021 14:18

I agree Disgusted these are some serious allegations that warrant a thorough investigation of this children's charity.

delurkasaurus · 28/12/2021 14:55

Has this been debunked? Because wasn't there this story from June 2019 which comprised the data breach and some detail of chats, weekends away with kids (involving alcohol), and Webberley?:

And after that, weren't Mermaids investigated by both the ICO and the Charity Commission? If investigated by the latter, then it hasn't been concluded, has it?

If this is true regarding her own child, why isn’t she in jail? Shock
