Ramayquaza · 13/12/2021 12:40

She is magnificent Thanks

Whitefire · 13/12/2021 12:41

@AlecTrevelyan006

Everyone should read 1984.
I have never read it, just ordered from eBay and hopefully with me before the end of the week.
GoodieMoomin · 13/12/2021 12:55

1984 is an absolutely essential read. I highly recommend Brave New World, too

Essential but bloody depressing! Anyone reading for the first time might want to wait until after Xmas... Xmas Sad
MummBRaaarrrTheEverLeaking · 13/12/2021 13:01

She is bloody amazing. Although I have noticed my likes on her thread reagrding those twats outside her house I've had to relike yesterday, and this morning because they keep disappearing Hmm

It didn't take too long for the frothers to start up, just read a horrible tweet where their take on what she said apparently made her a rape apologist Confused I mean it's fucking bonkers but it's also fucking dangerous, whipping up such utter bullshit.

GoodieMoomin · 13/12/2021 13:04

Definitely @SirSamuelVimes! And line up a box set of your favourite sitcom for a brain cleansing afterwards

brokendark · 13/12/2021 13:15

Nicola Sturgeon is what modern day misogyny looks like.

Grumpyosaurus · 13/12/2021 13:35

JKR 💚💜🤍

PineappleCakes · 13/12/2021 13:35

Had a quick look at JKR's post on Twitter, over 54K likes so far. She is amazing ♥️

I can't engage on Twitter, I find the levels of stupidity... mind numbing and depressing.

And Animal Farm.
Imposter1 · 13/12/2021 13:44

Oh thank god. My people.

I can’t look at the Twitter comments. It’s too depressing.

JKR is a legend. But I’m scared to say that on Twitter.

Whitefire · 13/12/2021 13:47

Have never read Animal Farm either. They were never on my school list of books.

Is it 1984 that I have to wait until after Christmas or Brave New World?

Giveaschitt · 13/12/2021 14:01

There's some terrifying reaching on Twatter - someone claiming that what she's actually saying is that if you're raped you should say it was a trans woman that did it. Apparently it might not be immediately obvious, but if you look really, really hard, that is definite what she is saying.... Plus she's also apparently saying that trans woman are never raped and if they are they have to be referred to by their biological sex as the victim. And she's saying that all trans women are rapists. Its quite incredible to watch really...

I'd say leave both until after Christmas they are not uplifting. Animal Farm is good too but, again, not uplifting.

The scary thing is the parallels between what is happening now and those books.

Mollyollydolly · 13/12/2021 14:20

Having seen the progressive American response on twitter I now understand why people voted for Trump. These people are insane. Helen Joyce is right .. we have to win.

SirSamuelVimes · 13/12/2021 14:21

Yes, put all the dystopian fiction to one side in a pile marked "January"!

I’d probably read them anytime but it depends on your overall mood at the moment.

There are many similarities between 1984 and brave new world in that they are set in a dystopian near future but there is a marked difference in tone.

1984 imagines a world where people are very much forced into behaving in a certain way. Brave New World suggests a slightly more subtle version where people are coerced into certain behaviours.

What Orwell feared were those who would Orwell feared those who would deprive us of information. Huxley feared those who would give us so much that we would be reduced to passivity and egoism. Orwell feared that the truth would be concealed from us. Huxley feared the truth would be drowned in a sea of irrelevance.

Definitely worth reading both.

Hmm. I'm not sure dystopin fiction in the most depressing month of the year is wise. Read at a happy time!

The comment from the clown "only 1 every 10 years"

In Ireland one male sex offender with GRC

The impact on policy change

Legal GRC 700 approx
0000 child of offenders*
0698 M&F non-offenders
0000 child of non-offenders*
1400 1 mother 1 father
0266 siblings ([email protected])
0000 children of siblings*
2364

  • ignored for minimum estimate.

The human context
A child
A mother
A father
Siblings of child
Grandparents
Siblings of parents
Siblings children
Siblings Partners families and children
Family friend's who have young children
Ex-partner's of rapist
Ex-partners children
Ex-partners family and friends
The rapist's family their children and family friends.
The police who investigated and their families.
The Judge and their family.
The prosecution team and defence team and their families (from the admin staff to the ones in Court).
Other witnesses (expert or not) and their families.
The Court staff, prison staff and their families.
The Jury who did their civic duty and their families.

It keeps rippling outward.
I am sure I have missed people who carry the mental harm of the "one every ten years".

Acceptable damage is a interesting position to take.

My logic was, well, if you're going to be miserable anyway, may as well have something good to read... 🤷‍♀️

Cailin66 · 13/12/2021 14:33

@MargaritaPie

"Well we’re not allowed to say ‘man’ when they identify as a woman, are we"

Is it really too much for JK Rowling and others to use the term transwomen? Even if she has differing views, just out of respect and to be polite?

You want a woman to call a rapist a woman out of respect for the rapist? Seriously?
2319inprogress · 13/12/2021 14:42

I believe MargaritaPie is serious.

When people show you who they are believe them...

YouSetTheTone · 13/12/2021 14:44

Thank you JKR for highlighting this Star

If I (a woman) was raped and went to court, what would happen if I identified as male during the court case? Would the charge change from rape to sexual assault (seemingly now perpetrated by a woman against a man)?

No. Rape is rape if it involves penetration by a penis, regardless of someone's (real or faux) 'identity' , and regardless of the sex of the victim. It's a specifically male crime in the U.K., but the victims are men as well as women (I can't remember the proportion but I think it's a not insignificant minority of cases)
