I'm a long way behind on this thread, but surely, SURELY, if AH had an ounce of common sense he would have spent 2 minutes at the start of the hearing explaining some of the background to his strongly held views which he believes (wrongly) come from a good place, and then tried to focus on contrition, regret and apology for the rest of the hearing?

Betty91 · 18/11/2021 16:52

Is he trying to make out he's an addict to the gaming / dopamine aspect of being an internet troll to suggest he's not in full control - and has self esteem & body image issues?

That's what has happened to date.

Then along came the Vice article and him not writing reflective pieces on his supposed GMC learnings....

If I can bring attention to these tweets, number 47, you ask me earlier to lower the temperature, I believe in 47, a year after, I have had reason to write that. E is not named in these tweets. It's intriguing E can recognise herself in these tweets

AH I would say the tweets listed under 47 aren't inappropriate and gave a clear message to E...yet in spite of that it continued nonetheless

RD: you accept that the many tweets with E was inappropriate. If I could relive my time I wish I'd never even heard of E and I would never have had an opportunity to engage with E. It's ended up in a very unfortunate situation and it's regretable

I don't accept that some if my actions within the overall actions with E were appropriate. Tweet 47 came immediately after E had constantly tweeted about me wild and unsubstantiated accusations about me

At that stage I was not prepared to take anymore and made it clear that it needed to stop. What was inappropriate was ending up with that in the first place

I cant highlight the second to last sentence, but that's what I'm on about.

So AH says it needs to stop and apparently that's all it takes, but when previously AH had been asked by a different tweeter to stop , that wasnt what? Relevant? Real? Truthful? An honest request?
Double fucking standards

Chairman concludes that's all the evidence we were going to receive at this stage. Chairman is asking for written submissions from RD & GP and they'll be read in our own time.
Discussion about this and a late start time to accommodate this. We will adjourn til tomorrow @10.30am.

GloGirl · 18/11/2021 17:02

He is positioning his defense as an addict.

Dopamine hits, learning the environment that "triggers" him , will maintain regular supervision etc.

I dare say he only kept his IG open to show he can safely have access to "some" social media and he will steer clear of the dangerous environments like Twitter where he could be tempted to "spiral".

If only he could have done a week at the Priory - I'm sure he would have gone, just to demonstrate the depths of his remorse.

"I was goaded, people were dreadful, I got sucked into it, I've learnt my lessons, colleagues will supervise me to make sure I maintain acceptable behaviour. I realise my triggers."

If the GMC can allow addicts to apologise, clean up and continue practicing why not someone who went a bit too far on social media and stopped entirely?

But fundamentally it comes down to how he treats people. How he bullies and harrasses people with a different view. He bragged about his profession and sought all manner of publicity. It wasnt a chemical addiction.

He built a pedestal of trans rights, put himself at the top of it and starting throwing torches. As a doctor he dragged his profession down with his reputation.

Terfasaurus · 18/11/2021 17:02

I suspect the additional piece of evidence was the Instagram post.

Ekofisk · 18/11/2021 17:03

I've just asked for my post at 16:52 and Betty91's post quoting it to be deleted as one of the Tweets has now been deleted.

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 18/11/2021 17:12

It's a canny approach, because the GMC has a good record on rehabilitating (real) addicts.

JustcameoutGC · 18/11/2021 17:13

So can they not ask him about the Vice piece because it is not in date range? Surely it speaks directly to his 'contrition' so could be permitted?

GCITC · 18/11/2021 17:16

He was asked about the Vice piece.
Redshoeblueshoe · 18/11/2021 17:19

Glogirl I think that's exactly what he is doing

Mollyollydolly · 18/11/2021 17:20

@ANewCreation

Not on twitter, so maybe I don't really understand the ins and outs, but I thought that block lists were a thing - so why did AH feel a need to actively engage with people whose opinions he seemingly despises?
He enjoyed it. The power rush, the bullying, it's a drug.
Artichokeleaves · 18/11/2021 17:26

He's taken no real responsibility for anything.

E provoked him and he couldn't be expected to manage his reactions when someone provokes him, and besides she deserved it and its her fault for making him do it. He is vulnerable and requires close supervision and caretaking to know right from wrong and monitor his own conduct even on policies that have been repeatedly explained to him. It was only when HE needed to come off Twitter for his MH that he felt it was time to stop. It never occurred to him at any time that what he was doing was over the line despite repeated attempts including written warnings. People involving the GMC was a meanie attempt by a gang and not a rational, reasonable response to a doctor publicly behaving in this wholly inappropriate way. (But he wholly supports doxxing and worse for people he does not like the speech and actions of, and that's different. That's ok. Because reasons.)

Even without this massive failure of responsibility and apparent competence to act in such a responsible role without a minder and a lot of differentiation, the fact stands that the tweets read as rude, petty, unpleasant, and not in any way behaviour that should be associated with a working doctor.

If he'd posted this anonymously then whatever, much of it would just be unpleasant twit posting anonymously, but he chose to do it under his real name with his real job.

I don't see this as adding up to someone who should be in any position of great responsibility and judgement, and that's the bottom line. Competency is a thing.

Artichokeleaves · 18/11/2021 17:29

Also a bit Confused that it took three years, during which written warnings, verbal explanations, colleagues and his mum, before he had sufficiently intensive input to be able to understand his work SM policy.

This isn't a job where this degree of challenge with reading comprehension is really going to fly.

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 18/11/2021 17:32

All I can do is make my solid assurances that I've learnt some unforgettable lessons from these events and these events will never rear their ugly head again or happen again. I'm not saying it's implausible the situ would never arise again...

RD has no further questions
GP: just that last point about reflection where you are now. You told us around the time of the tweets in the bundle, September 2020, that you deleted your twitter account. Why did you do that?

AH: these tweets are only a glimpse of the extent of the abuse coming from the other side. It got to a point the level of abuse and harassment, both online and IRL, became unsustainable. Benefit of my own mental well being j can't continue to engage

I'm not saying it's implausible the situ would never arise again...

Lol why did he say this and did they notice?
"I'm really regretful but I might do it again, soz"
Or does he mean he'd get tweeted to but he wouldn't do 'the events' of slagging people off?

I also liked the bit where he wished he'd never known E existed so he wouldn't have had to do all this on Twitter and have this problem.

There are other Es in the world. We cannot E proof the world. We expect professionals to be able to behave professionally, responsibly and to know how to deal with things they don't like without behaving like this. And we at least expect them to have the basic common sense not to do it in their own bloody name!

Thanks all for keeping this up. I can't countenance the idea of Harrop getting away with this, and can't see how that's remotely possible given his woeful performance. But I freely admit I am biased as I can't stand the little twerp
