Woman's Hour 18/11/2021 Nancy Kelley CEO of Stonewall

From the programme notes:

"Nancy Kelley is CEO of Stonewall, the largest LGBT rights charity in Europe. She speaks to Emma about her organisation’s work and gives her reaction to recent high-profile withdrawals from Stonewall’s Diversity Champions workplace inclusion scheme, including the BBC."

Hmmm...yes, we've heard - and dissected - the previous pronouncement from that quarter about the BBC pulling out of the Stonewall scheme. Let's see what waffle and spin come out in this interview.

I'll be listening to this.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 17/11/2021 23:40

Don't suppose she'll have much to say given Stonewall's preferred mantra of #nodebate.
They may have to play some sad music instead Hmm

Melroses · 18/11/2021 00:09

I expect it will be a rehash of the Middle Temple appearance.

ItsLittoralViolins · 18/11/2021 00:09

Emma Barnett does finally seem to have been questioning activist guests more analytically and robustly of late.

Should be interesting. I hope EB asks NK about the Stonewall involvement in the ideologically extreme 'Safe To Be Me' conference next year, to be chaired by Lord Nick Herbert Lib Dem, and the role of the soon-to-be-discredited APPG involving other members like Crispin 'backroom' Blunt.

Tangled webs.

Hope she asks her what a lesbian is.

Datun · 18/11/2021 00:14

Funny, isn't it, how you couldn't get hold of a stonewall representative for love nor money. And now one podcast later...

Redshoeblueshoe · 18/11/2021 00:19

Well I am going to let you lot take one for the team - and I'll catch up later on here

Mollyollydolly · 18/11/2021 00:19

Looking forward to this. I wouldn't like to be interviewed by Emma Barnett. She'll have done her preparation.

Abitofalark · 18/11/2021 00:31

I can't wait to see how the BBC intends to do this interview straight after the furore over leaving the Stonewall programme. Is it to show balance or give a right to reply, or meant to hold out a hand to the rejected suitor or to kiss and make up? Or to smooth the ruffled feathers of an angry staff group? Will Emma Barnett pounce with the Gotcha! technique that she relies on so much? Will we be able to discern which way the wind is blowing or which way the BBC is facing?

This will be really interesting to hear!

StandWithYou · 18/11/2021 07:13

I hope she asks about equating gender critical beliefs with Nazism.

EmpressaurusWitchDoesntBurn · 18/11/2021 07:21

Interesting. Emma did a brilliant job on the recent interview with that bloke from the BBC about their relationship with Stonewall.

I hope she’ll ask her about her statement conflating lesbianism with racism.

LizzieSiddal · 18/11/2021 07:35

It’s just been advertised on R4 and is a prerecorded interview, which I always think are better as people can’t waffle in order to waste time.

I hope Emma is her usually rigorous and brilliant self.

JustcameoutGC · 18/11/2021 07:37

It is great to see Nancy start to talk. It is one thing to say from an ideological perspective they wont debate whether TW are W, but it is organisational suicide to not answer the allegations of inappropriate levels of influence inside national bodies.

I do hope she asks if NK stands by the view that GC women are akin to anti-semites and holocaust deniers.

LonginesPrime · 18/11/2021 07:43

Yes, it's heartening to see that they might have realised this now.

Stonewall has acted absolutely bizarrely for a charity over the past few years, so I'm pleased to see that they're taking steps to actually engage with the public again instead of acting like some secret doomsday cult.

beigebrownblue · 18/11/2021 07:50

bump

beigebrownblue · 18/11/2021 07:51

@Datun

Hope she asks her what a lesbian is.
Good idea
highame · 18/11/2021 08:00

I want her to explain how 'getting ahead of the law' is appropriate in a democracy

BoreOfWhabylon · 18/11/2021 08:08

Interesting. Stonewall getting rattled now.

Redshoeblueshoe · 18/11/2021 08:19

I'd like to ask her when do I get my cheque from the Christian far right, because I'm a bit short right now, so a few extra quid would be nice for Christmas 🎄

FindTheTruth · 18/11/2021 08:19

It is great to see Nancy start to talk

yes it is, this has been needed all along. To see Nancy & co. sat next to and talking to Naomi Cunningham & co the other night. was historic.

what's interesting is that Nancy & co. couldn't answer the direct questions put to them at the Middle Temple event the other night. Somehow I can't see getting away with it on WH with Emma Barnett but who knows

FindTheTruth · 18/11/2021 08:21

@Datun

Hope she asks her what a lesbian is.
My favourite question suggestion. I really hope she does.
MidsomerMurmurs · 18/11/2021 08:31

The short clip in the trailer is interesting.

I think it’s important that we try and make it possible for people to explore things, to learn, and try and have, like, always an open door for that

It would be good to know how that is compatible with #nodebate etc.

I don’t think we’ve contributed to people being harassed or harmed in the kind of way that we’ve been talking about

Suggests that EB will present NK with examples of the kind of rank misogyny that Trans Rights Activists routinely come out with. Given that many of them parrot Stonewall’s slogans, again it would be good to hear how NK concludes that Stonewall plays no part in that.

Examples from Terfisaslur would be good. Also the pavement art outside Filia. Marion Miller’s case. Man at the bus stop. Little OJ. Etc etc etc.

nauticant · 18/11/2021 08:36

This is good timing. Emma Barnett had a thorough primer the other week from Kathleen Stock about what gender critical means and the consequences that a lesbian woman can face for being gender critical.

It seems that the longer Stonewall have been hiding from serious interviews, the more the media have been looking for answers elsewhere and now that Nancy Kelley has realised she has to put Stonewall's case, she's facing a better informed and more critical set of interrogators.
