On Monday there is an amendment being tabled in the House of Lords to the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill which would stop men being held in women’s prisons.
Anyone on twitter please tweet #KeepProsonsSingleSex and #Amendment214 to show strength of feeling.

That is an excellent letter.

I used to be really anti the HoL but I've done a complete 360. I now think they're the only people who have the interests of the population at heart as most of the members of the HoC are self-serving career politicians.

They have stood up for women's interests time and again over the last few years.

KeepPrisonsSingleSex · 15/11/2021 09:05

Even if this amendment doesn't pass, this is still a win.

I want the government to state why the operation of the GRA which permits male sexual offenders to obtain a GRC whilst in prison, obtaining no surgery to do so, and to then be transferred to the female estate and be risk assessed and recorded as a woman is the correct thing to do.

The letters we have had back from MPs and Ministers post-judicial review have pleased that the JR judgement found that the policies are lawful (with subsequent throwing up of hands in a 'so what can we do?!?!' sort of way).

Well, here's something which CAN be done. The JR looked at lawfulness, not desirability. If it is lawful, change the law. And here's how it can be done.

If the government won't do that, then they must defend why all of this is desirable. In public. And on record.

I just don’t get the mother and baby unit thing - they are neither, so why? Is it the facilities?

PaleBlueMoonlight · 15/11/2021 09:12

I have always been a supporter of the House of Lords as an unelected chamber, the question for me has always been what the procedure should be to appoint Lords - how to do you achieve a broad church of experts in their fields and dedicated thinkers from the heart of communities (which is what I think it should look like!)?

If the amendment is being discussed this afternoon, then it is fingers crossed. I will try and listen.

Datun · 15/11/2021 09:14

Lord Blencathra,:

"This meant that the prison service treated them in every respect as biological sex women. That is not right.

YY. The law makers know sex matters. Unfortunately they left it up to misogynists to implement it.

Yes, there is absolutely a need for a second chamber to question and check the Commons; it's whether it should be stuffed full of hereditary peers and bishops (automatically male).

We have so few scientists/engineers as MPs, it would be great if the HoL could have a focus on those who understand statistics and practicality.

Completely and utterly agree.

'If this is legal, the law must change' yes yes YES.

@FindTheTruth

looks like it's the last slot this afternoon: Legislation: Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill – committee stage (day 8)
Thanks. Will be watching.

Good luck to KPSS.

perfectly put. this is the key.

Yes. In the full glare of the media, who are spotlighting these issues generally at the moment.

MrsJamin · 15/11/2021 10:29

Oh this is exciting! And just brings more light onto the situation. It's incredible that male prisoners are housed with female prisoners because of literally saying some words and the TWAW mantra, and that the argument is being held now, to say no this should not be the case! It's just bonkers that we sleep walked into this situation in the first place, no doubt because of Stonewall's influence.

GrandmaMazur · 15/11/2021 10:35

Have got everything crossed for this one.

Though it’s a sorry state of affairs that this is seen as in any way controversial when I imagine most people would think you’re off your rocker if you told them men were being held in women’s prisons.

I wish the law would be changed to exclude any man born male from being in women’s prisons, not just those with particular convictions.

battymaggot · 15/11/2021 11:58

Definitely a positive step and all credit to HL. It's not the first time HL has shown the bottle so tragically lacking in the commons to stand up to the Gender woo woo. Spare a thought and please support the efforts of women in Scotland. We have to endure erasure from Nicola ' feminist to her fingertips' and the rest of the SNP gender brokers. One day they will realise that they are on the wrong side of history. Women won't wheesht.

WalkOnGildedSplinters · 15/11/2021 12:07

Yes, me too. I suppose one step at a time.

Thanks for everything you do KeepPrisonsSingleSex.

WalkOnGildedSplinters · 15/11/2021 12:39

💪 good to hear!

Ereshkigalangcleg · 15/11/2021 12:40

You are doing such amazing work Thanks

Datun · 15/11/2021 12:57

The Lords letter calls these people males, too. That's really important progress.

burnoutbabe · 15/11/2021 15:54

think they just moved it to Wednesday morning now.

jeaux90 · 15/11/2021 16:24

They are talking about it now, not sure whether the amendment 214 will be proposed today. On amendment 208 at the moment.

KeepPrisonsSingleSex · 15/11/2021 17:24

The were at it until gone midnight on Monday last week, so there may be a good few hours to go!!

ArabellaScott · 15/11/2021 17:38

Cripes, KPSS. I was all ready with my party hat hours ago and am starting to get hungry. Obvs takes stamina to be a peer.

Timefortea4 · 15/11/2021 18:18

Thanks so much KPSS for all your work on this. It is so good to see it being discussed in Parliament. I have emailed my MP to ask whether his party will support the amendment. And if not, why not. Let's get them explaining why they think male sex offenders should be housed in the female estate.

FindTheTruth · 15/11/2021 18:54

So.... tuned in at 2:30pm for Amendment 114, only to find it was at 108. and learned how f*cked the justice system has been. a 25 year old gets a 2 year sentence and is still in at 38 years old!!!! and a former minister putting his hands up and saying "We got it wrong". I just Hope all these amendments go through
