DIANE ABBOTT AND SEX WORK ARTICLE IN THE TIMES

Diane tweeted about sex work
'Horrific that Durham University is offering training to students who want to be sex workers part-time. Sex work is degrading, dangerous and exploitative. Uni should have nothing to do with it'.
If you really want to depress yourself look at the responses to her tweet. I really don't understand what went wrong on the left, how is prostitution progressive? I just don't get it, some of the replies from the likes of Femi and blue tick Independent journalists make me feel sick. They sound like pimps.

Saddest of all are the young women who have been gaslight into thinking this is a good career choice. So depressing.

God it’s so depressing
I despair for this generation of young women

KimikosNightmare · 16/11/2021 19:22

Do you think sex workers should lose custody of their children for selling sexual services?

There will be situations where yes , that is necessary.

Here are the views of parents in Leeds Holbeck - the so called "managed zone"

@KimikosNightmare the stories on that website are awful. The guy asking the 13 year old if she was working and then arguing with her mother about his right to ask any woman in the area was just dreadful. I had to stop reading the stories about women being dragged into cars and raped because they are so upsetting. Living in that area must be hell (and not just that specific area - it seems to be anywhere in the vicinity that's seen as fair game).

merrymouse · 17/11/2021 07:02

Again you are sanitising the reality of what it means to 'sell sexual services' and the real danger to physical safety.

Men are not buying a service, they are buying the use of a body.

loislovesstewie · 17/11/2021 07:41

Bloody hell! I've just read the awful stories on the website. What idiot thought this would be a good idea?

Helleofabore · 17/11/2021 07:43

I think there is a huge amount of sanitizing happening. This is a poster that repeatedly has tried to maintain that all sex workers are happy, well adjusted people and not one of them is trafficked, drug or alcohol dependent or with mental health issues. Or that would be living in a situation that would pose any risk to a child.

loislovesstewie · 17/11/2021 07:50

And there is also the issue of the long-term effects on the mental health of a person who is forced into degrading acts. Start off doing things that are OK by you and after a while you end up doing things that are not OK but pay more or feel coerced into.
What are the chances of a young prostitute having a happy, loving sexual relationship when she has had enough of selling her body?

I have just read that link. It is beyond belief what is going on. What harrowing stories. To think innocent girls get abducted and raped, then are told they had no case, or the man acquitted, because there was no proof they weren’t prostitutes - simply because they lived in a do called ‘managed zone’.

And it goes to show that raping prostitutes would be fine too.

MargaritaPie · 17/11/2021 13:00

"Here is a link that shows huge numbers of women are sex-trafficked daily"

Yet the largest anti-trafficking operation in the UK that involved all police forces doing surprise raids in all known brothels and homes of sex workers fell completely flat?

Should we have another Operation Pentameter and have all police forces surprise raid every home of every sex worker or brothel again looking for traffickers and trafficked victims? Would it be any different this time around?

MargaritaPie · 17/11/2021 13:02

@loislovesstewie

So why then are you advocating that Universities, of all places, tell them how to work safely? I would suggest that it would be better to point out the pitfalls of carrying out prostitution.
I think that has been answered lots of time s already.

And you are continuing to ghoulishly push that 2009 campaign like it has any relevance today.

It is like you are stuck in a bubble of activism and cannot see new data that disproves your one article.

There are most likely many reasons that campaign failed. For you to gleefully declare that in 2009 there were NO trafficked prostitutes is false. Either you are determined to ignore the accounts that I was reading even back in early 00s of trafficked women, and of even the small number of ONS stats collected at the time, or you are overly reliant on that one article to push your agenda.

Either way, it says a great deal about you.

Waitwhat23 · 17/11/2021 13:15

Operation Pentameter which took place in 2009? When various studies show that the numbers have increased year on year since then. You might want to use sources within at least the last decade if they are to be in any way relevant. Like these -

“The now 17-year-old claimed she was 'vulnerable and unstable mentally' when she agreed to have sex with Lowry for £120 in 2020, with the offence taking place at his home.

She said: "Kenneth was charged with paying for the sexual services of a child. He paid £120 to have sex with me while a relative of mine sat and watched. My relative had wanted the money to go to a party."

When contacted by BirminghamLive Lowry claimed the girl had been a sex worker who had replied to his advert for 'legal age sex' placed on the Craigslist website.”

Sounds great! All that choicey empowering sex work for completely consenting adult women with no controlling and abusive men present anywhere. Yes?

KimikosNightmare · 19/11/2021 01:13

[quote foxgoosefinch]@MargaritaPie

Is it this kind of thing that’s really empowering?

My jaw is aching from the number of times it hit the floor reading that article.

The comments made by that vile man and the equally vile woman beautifully demonstrate how brutalising and dehumanising prostitution is.

Helleofabore · 19/11/2021 08:02

I notice we haven’t had any more comment about why anyone should consider the 09 article to be relevant in 2021. Or even HOW it can be considered relevant!

So, I think it is pretty easy to judge the credibility of posters who have posted such links. Maybe on this thread, like on ‘some’ other threads, that poster is more interested in scoring points off women discussing women’s rights than discussing their actual point of view.

foxgoosefinch · 19/11/2021 09:55

@KimikosNightmare absolutely - and though I’ve seen Margarita on other threads today complaining about Jk Rowling, s/he has notably not returned to comment on this thread.

MargaritaPie · 19/11/2021 12:02

"Is it this kind of thing that’s really empowering"

Sex with a child (paid for or not) is already illegal. He has rightly lost his job and been convicted over this.

MargaritaPie · 19/11/2021 12:07

I just read the article.

"placed on the Craigslist website"

One of the problems with using Craigslist for this sort of thing is it's not meant for this. There are no age verification checks or anything like that in place like Punternet has.

foxgoosefinch · 19/11/2021 13:24

Sorry, Margarita, are you confusing “Punternet” with some kind of lovely paternal safeguarding morally upstanding sex work website…?

foxgoosefinch · 19/11/2021 13:27

You seem very familiar with the workings of Punternet, too, Margarita.

FlyingOink · 19/11/2021 13:36

I thought Punternet was just for reviews? Are you thinking of Adultwork, MPIE?

I remember a thread on here where women discovered their husbands/boyfriends had AW accounts, it was very interesting.

MargaritaPie · 19/11/2021 16:22

It's for reviews/feedback and for escort advertising. And yes the escorts (which as stated above, need to be age verified unlike Craigslist) can leave reviews for the clients too (eg if the client is a no-show timewaster or something the escort can say this in the feedback which other escorts can see which may mean they won't take a booking from that client). For an example.

Fun fact- Harriet Harman once made a fuss a few years back over Punternet and even called the California Governor Arnie to ask him to close it down. The result of this was for the site to get a lot of publicity and sex workers were thanking Harriet for the free advertising because they got more customers as a result.
