DIANE ABBOTT AND SEX WORK ARTICLE IN THE TIMES

Diane tweeted about sex work
'Horrific that Durham University is offering training to students who want to be sex workers part-time. Sex work is degrading, dangerous and exploitative. Uni should have nothing to do with it'.
If you really want to depress yourself look at the responses to her tweet. I really don't understand what went wrong on the left, how is prostitution progressive? I just don't get it, some of the replies from the likes of Femi and blue tick Independent journalists make me feel sick. They sound like pimps.

Saddest of all are the young women who have been gaslight into thinking this is a good career choice. So depressing.

can you link to the tweet?
not on twitter so can't look

ErrolTheDragon · 12/11/2021 18:31

I'd not read the Times yet today, this must be the article you mean - I've not read it myself yet

www.thetimes.co.uk/article/durham-university-trains-its-students-to-be-sex-workers-6wcj7ncfh?shareToken=8d438f014ca7c85736f81355225d6351

notagain1001 · 12/11/2021 18:34

Well she's not wrong on that one. How many other female Labour MPs would be brave enough to agree with the Conservative Universities Minister? Does she also know what a woman is?

AdamRyan · 12/11/2021 18:41

I'm totally confused as to what is going on.
Durham say they want to support students providing sex services to do it safely.
Some (not all) media outlets say they are training students to be sex workers, based on something another MP (Michele Donelan) said. Its all very confusing. I think safety messages are important so I'm not too het up but as usualthe tone directed at Diane Abbott is laced with racism ("aunty") , ageism and misogyny

AdamRyan · 12/11/2021 18:43

It is that article errol with a disclaimer
The headline to this article has been amended to make clear that the university is not training sex workers but offering safety training for students who may be working in the sex industry. Presumably after Diane's tweet and resulting furore

JustcameoutGC · 12/11/2021 18:51

The university has to keep the fees rolling in. Even if they have to pimp out their female students to do it.

Babdoc · 12/11/2021 18:51

I thought it was the Students Union, not the university itself?
But neither of them should be normalising prostitution. Their input should be limited to pointing students to alternative sources of employment, income, loans or hardship funds, plus counselling for any students suffering post traumatic stress from being used as pieces of meat by violent misogynists in this vile “industry”.

Janaih · 12/11/2021 18:56

I despair at the comments as usual.
Are the menz doing sex work to pay their degrees?

Couchbettato · 12/11/2021 18:57

@JustcameoutGC

The university has to keep the fees rolling in. Even if they have to pimp out their female students to do it.
This is the disgusting thing.

The students probably don't even realise that they're cornered into it, and probably defend it as a legitimate choice.

fournonblondes · 12/11/2021 18:57

Omg that is horrifying!

Whatsnewpussyhat · 12/11/2021 19:11

Funny isn't it that male students don't get told sex work is work and that they should go on only fans to pay tuition fees.

LobsterNapkin · 12/11/2021 19:26

I really don't understand what went wrong on the left

They've probably heard, all their lives, an argument that goes like this: "We know kids doing x, y, or z isn't great, but it will happen nonetheless, so we should help them do it in a safe way."

If you go off to AIBU and ask questions about letting kids do things at home, be it have boy or girlfriends over to stay, drugs, etc, you will have a certain number of parents who are adamant that they would rather just let the kids do it at home so they can keep an eye on it, rather than attempt to influence their choices or voice disapproval.

And for a lot of them, they don't see it as a lot different than the casual sex the students might be having anyway. Maybe even less risky if it's stuff like cam work.

They are pretty poor reasons IMO but not far from the things they already believe and do.

LobsterNapkin · 12/11/2021 19:28

@Whatsnewpussyhat

It's probably not that they wouldn't tell men to do it, but sex work for men isn't really such a big market.

But it puts the lie to the idea that sex work is the only way for students to get by. Lots of them aren't going to be able to monetize sex for one reason or another.

FindTheTruth · 12/11/2021 19:29

this reminds me of the male sex worker in Canada who ran LGBT youth clubs opening doors to 30+ year old males to access female teens, before coming to the UK to work in Stonewalls Trans office where they tried to get a black lesbian barrister fired.

the point being - the same narrative comes up time and time again. 'sex work' alongside 'coercing females' alongside 'abusing females' alongside silencing women. I hope Diane Abbott wakes up about these connections.

Babdoc · 12/11/2021 19:36

If no male students are forced into sex work to fund their degrees, why the hell is it ever an option or “necessity” for female ones?
Why can’t these girls take the same jobs in call centres, restaurants, hotels, tutoring etc that my DDs did when students? One of my DDs was actually at Durham uni 12 years ago, and she’s disgusted at what is happening there now.

Thefartingsofaofdenmarkstreet · 12/11/2021 19:38

Lots of 'feminist men' in the replies 'reminding' Dianne Abbot that 'sex work is work'

As if any of them would be happy to spend their days getting done up the arse and sucking off multiple minging blokes for a few quid, and then getting slagged off on Punternet because they were 'a bit chubby' or 'looked bored the whole time'.

Fuck off.

soapboxqueen · 12/11/2021 19:40

I'm intrigued by how one makes 'sex work' safe.

Q: Where does the threat come from? What makes it unsafe?

Answer: The punters/pimps

What course is a young woman going to go on that will change the behaviour of the man she's with? What will they teach her?

I'm sure there'll be some interesting tips but none of it will mean anything once you are alone with someone who wants to hurt you.

MrsJamin · 12/11/2021 19:48

Can I suggest other alumni email [email protected] and voice your concern at what this does to the reputation of your university. I'm utterly horrified that Durham could be so stupid as to be OK with this even if it is just run by students to students at the union.

StillWeRise · 12/11/2021 19:52

The share token has run out (or, can't be used by the same person twice)
but from memory the times article did not state it was training aimed at female students only. Can anyone check?

However, in any case, many of those answers are showing their writers up with sexism/racsim and ageism
oh, and this too-

Guys, I know the levels of cope in here are already off the charts but she's just telling you with her full chest what she thinks of "degrading" sex work so maybe deal with that instead of acting like she's been bamboozled

nice.

Lordamighty · 12/11/2021 20:04

She is not wrong in what she had said here but the responses to her tweet are utterly depressing.

StillWeRise · 12/11/2021 20:12

however, it has given Nordic Model Now a chance to promote their handbook and seminar- wonder how many of these rape apologists will have the humility or curiosity to attend and listen- to survivors of prostitution

PronounssheRa · 12/11/2021 20:16

I really don't understand what went wrong on the left

Men on the left are every bit as willing to pay to rape women as men on the right.

Its really time to stop putting (men on) the left on a pedestal. They are as misogynistic as the right, they just try to hide it under the banner of progressive.

Ohmygodyesthatsit · 12/11/2021 20:23

Tbf lots of support for Diane Abbots postion as well.

Cactu · 12/11/2021 20:27

They should probably warn students that they’ll be unable to do certain jobs, and presumably courses, as a result of being involved in the sex industry, such as teaching. This came up on a thread the other day.

If sex work is work and nothing more why aren’t universities campaigning to have these rules changed as it would be clear discrimination.
