It seems to be causing safety issues…

I swear the same thing was reported having happened in America (?) last year or the year before?

MrsOvertonsWindow · 10/11/2021 20:07

It's infuriating how the wishes of one exceptionally powerful group in society are able to trample over the safety and needs of other groups. These crossings do not comply with legislation but are actually dangerous for numbers of vulnerable groups:

Until transgender people and other minority groups are able to live without fear of discrimination or hate, we must continue to demonstrate our support and stand with them to clearly demonstrate our commitment to eliminating transphobia.

Discrimination against disabled people doesn't matter though.

NecessaryScene · 10/11/2021 20:10

The horse incident caught on video was in the UK last year, and that's what the article is referring to, rather than something on this specific crossing.

I recall there was a thing in the US or Canada where some skid marks left on a rainbow crossing were being investigated as a hate incident. Grin

Apparently Camden did manage to do an impact assessment, but apparently RNIB and TfL's Independent Disability Advisary Group were trumped by the Beaumont Society(!)

Fortunately the mayor has directed that all crossings should be in the standard LGB Alliance colours from now on. Wink Bev & Kate - branding geniuses...

Blackandwhitehorse · 10/11/2021 20:11

Yes and anyone who raises it is transphobic 🙄 as long as trans people feel ‘safe’ actual real safety is sidelined for virtue signalling.

The good thing I did see was Sadiq Khan has paused the roll out due to concerns raised.

Oh FGS. A road crossing has a very specific purpose. Where TF have people's brains gone begging? Will they be replacing motorway cats eyes' with glitter balls for Pride month next? Confused

MrsOvertonsWindow · 10/11/2021 20:21

Nooo foxgoosefinch Please don't give them ideas.

Btw - that twitter thread posted was rather fab!

JellySaurus · 10/11/2021 20:21

There is a legal requirement to carry out impact assessments. (I think!) But is there a legal requirement to take action according to the results of the impact assessments?

Are EIAs a tickbox exercise?

PronounssheRa · 10/11/2021 20:22

I've been watching this play out on twitter for the last couple of days. Transport for all have said concerns about accessibility for people with disabilities has been weaponised Confused twitter.com/TransportForAll/status/1458146144870178818

The council man whose been promoting this crossing is baffled about why no one who has visual or cognitive Impairments has contacted him on twitter, I mean just think about that for one moment 🤔 idiot

ArtemesiaK · 10/11/2021 20:26

Ours in Wimbledon was the first, I think. Didn't mind the normal colours too much but I was furious when they updated it with trans and BLGB colours. My council tax.....Grrr

334bu · 10/11/2021 20:26

Obviously this Equality Impact Assessment was a tick box exercise . Every disabled group highlighted serious concerns re safety etc and they were all ignored.
This is outrageous.

Blackandwhitehorse · 10/11/2021 20:26

They are so predictable. Anything untoward that happens because of this ideology is always ‘weaponised’

PronounssheRa · 10/11/2021 20:27

Are EIAs a tickbox exercise

They shouldn’t be. This one is bad, very bad. Long list of why colourful crossings are a problem for people with disabilities all ignored because the Beaumont society said the crossing was lovely.

Ikeameatballs · 10/11/2021 20:29

It’s really dreadful.

What will they say if someone is injured, or worse, using the crossing?

2020isnotbehaving · 10/11/2021 20:29

I wouldn’t even try cross there nor would I assume drivers would stop. Do they realise guide dogs take years of training can’t just change road markings they don’t even have strips going same way.

I’m all for awareness and flags whatever but someone will get hurt or worse. Unless major road signs before it explain its still a crossing and to be extra careful?

Santastuckincustoms · 10/11/2021 20:30

How are you supposed to know what this is? I mean traffic markings are pretty standardised for a reason.

334bu · 10/11/2021 20:30

The council man whose been promoting this crossing is baffled about why no one who has visual or cognitive Impairments has contacted him on twitter, I mean just think about that for one moment 🤔 idiot

It might also have been because he blocked replies to his original tweet.
So tweet me your complaints but I will block them before they get to meHmm

IDanielRadcliffe · 10/11/2021 20:33

As a non-binary person I don’t feel either the red or green man is inclusive of me. I will fight for non-binary folx to be represented and campaign for the red and green man to flash at the same time (one will have a skirt added).

RainbowCrossing · 10/11/2021 20:33

Yes, Wimbledon's is hideous. And is it a zebra crossing or not?

I have just seen a local councillor retweeting GC things though. So now I am wondering whether to email him about this and also some schools stuff. If he's not the cabinet member for anything education related will he be able to do anything? Might be worth a discussion? This isn't his ward though (and neither am I...)

Cismyfatarse · 10/11/2021 20:33

Is it worth tweeting photos of our local black and white zebra crossings and thank x council for standing up for LGB people? Tagging in LGB Alliance?

It might cause an excess of frothing but I am up for it!

LynetteScavo · 10/11/2021 20:36

I quite like a jolly rainbow zebra crossing, but I struggle to take them seriously as a zebra crossing.

I think crossing markings should be the same everywhere all over the UK - it's too confusing to have transgender crossing in some places and not others. I don't really care what colour crossings are, but for safety reasons they should be the same everywhere.

What next, police cars the colours of the transgender flag?

I do like the idea of glitter balls on the motorway though Grin

Shedmistress · 10/11/2021 20:36

It is not just paint, all road markings are made of a specific thermoplastic which needs to meet certain highway specifications.

You can't just change the law on road safety.

foxgoosefinch · 10/11/2021 20:36

Yeah, every time I use one of those traditional zebra crossings my gender feels so affirmed.

NecessaryScene · 10/11/2021 20:39

The most dangerous potential impact is people thinking it's a zebra crossing.

Lots of people discussing them do.

That's the sort of logic. Crossing = stripey. Flags = stripey. Let's put flag on a crossing.

Except only ZEBRA crossings are stripey. Light controlled crossings are NOT stripey because traffic is NOT required to stop for pedestrians.

But they've put these markings on the LIGHT controlled crossings (presumably because there's no specific rule saying they should be blank/plain).

There is a real risk of an impact here with someone trying to use a light-controlled crossing as if it was a zebra crossing, and crossing on red.

NecessaryScene · 10/11/2021 20:41

(Even most people discussing the crossings are confused and calling them zebra crossings. They're not!)
