It seems to be causing safety issues…

@KittenKong

BigFatLiar - these are police horses. They are trained to be as unspookable as horses can be. They were struggling to keep control - and if you know horses, you know how bloody strong they are and how dangerous this was.

No ‘stirring’ necessary - these markings are dangerous.

Would they be similarly spooked by a van with these markings?
WomaninBoots · 11/11/2021 09:47

The horses will just be freaked out by the change, they are very wary of Thing That Are Different. For example I had a mare that was terrified of the daffodils every spring.

They are particularly wary of things on the ground that might get their feet. It makes sense for them to be suspicious of new footing and different coloured footing... might be a bottomless bog! Or a trap! Their vision is quite different from ours and they may perceive the markings as a potential hole in the ground even.

My daffy daffodil mare was also very cautious about normal road markings but was OK once they had proven themselves sufficiently safe and un-trapping. But she always high stepped over them just in case.

She'd have hit the roof at rainbow crossings! But would have eventually got used to it.

TL:DR... horses are Very Silly but it makes sense to them.

WomaninBoots · 11/11/2021 09:48

They would be unlikely to freak at a van. They see vans all the time with many different patterns etc. It's not the rainbow patter for them. It's the "different thing underfoot".

WomaninBoots · 11/11/2021 09:53

I should clarify that though the horses would get used to it as they get used to normal black and white road markings etc, it still adds an extra risk to the rider and others when horses encounter something like this and react. In all honesty I am surprised that the police horses reacted so strongly given the de-spooking work they will have done but the crossing was sufficiently unusual to the horses to get a reaction. I would have ideally responded slightly differently to my horse being cautious than the police riders did but that's a whole other discussion and not really relevant.

ScreamingMeMe · 11/11/2021 09:54

Found it. Of course they had to so some backpedalling even though he was absolutely right about where the privilege lies.

They won't stand with you if you're in the way of something they want, Mik. Trust us on that.

Aww, your lovely horse.

@KevinTheKoala

Not the point at all but does anyone know why the horses are so spooked by the colours? It's horrible to watch they look so scared. I don't know why they can't just put murals up on the walls if they want to have something that shows inclusivity rather than change something that actually has a function and people (and animals) have been taught how they work for years.
It’s new and different, and horses (being prey animals) are cautious. And whimsical. That rosebush at the side of the lane that they’ve gone past a hundred times before is suddenly spooky and has to be avoided.
VelvetChairGirl · 11/11/2021 10:35

I thought this was stupid when I first saw them, my first thought wasnt the visually impaired etc but obviously it affects them, I thought the drivers wont stop, it just looks like graffiti how is anyone meant to know its a crossing. I wouldnt use it because I wouldnt trust the drivers and I doubt my ASD son would even recognize it as a crossing.

stupid virtue signalling BS and its always one way too, wheres the crossing with the black pride colours or the feminist movement colours. everyone is sick of ranbows everywhere anyway. and to me a rainbow is gods covenant, to hindus it will be hindras bow etc.

Large amounts of thermoplastic on the roads reduces grip in the rain and is unsafe for cyclists

And presumably for pedestrians?
ScreamingMeMe · 11/11/2021 13:35

And presumably for pedestrians?

Good point. I've had footwear before that I couldn't wear inthe rain because I would slip on smooth surfaces.

It's just crazy all around. And these crossings are in loads of places, all around the world Sad

SomepeopleareTERFSgetoverit · 11/11/2021 14:02

On a traditional zebra you can safely traverse it on two wheels by sticking to the tarmac parts. These colourful designs deprive you of that option. Obviously it’s not as serious as the challenge they present to blind and partially sighted people, but it’s just another example of the practical problems that are being ignored.

Another person who has only realised feom reading this that it's not a zebra crossing.

I don't think the one in the horse video is even a crossing, its just two opposing dropped kerbs.
StealthPolarBear · 11/11/2021 17:04

Sorry not see the video, juat the pictures on Twitter

WhereAreWeNow · 11/11/2021 17:26

I've crossed the road at this godawful trans flag crossing and I can report that it's actually quite a tricky intersection at the best of times. One of the roads has a steady stream of car traffic (1 direction) and cycle lanes (2 directions). The intersecting road is just 1 direction I think. But it's busy and it's confusing because of the 2 way cycle lanes. There are a lot of bikes hurtling along because it's a big university/student area. All in all, the flags do nothing to help. They just add to the confusion!

Pacmann · 11/11/2021 17:29

Has anyone figured out what the point of them is yet? What positive difference is having them on the roads doing to anyone?

KittenKong · 11/11/2021 17:30

It’s because we just haven’t got enough rainbows of trans flags yet.

ScreamingMeMe · 11/11/2021 17:30

Great article from Glinner there.

I really hope there is a time we can look back on this period of lunacy, selfishness and pig-headedness with a wry smile. But at the moment I'm just rather disgusted and angry.

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 11/11/2021 18:01

@slug

I cycled over that crossing earlier this week. To be honest I didn't clock it as a pedestrian crossing at all. The lines go the wrong way for a start. The colours simply don't register as "pedestrian crossing" when you're travelling at speed. But worst of all was when I came back in the evening. It's simply not visible in low light. I was through it before I realised it was there.
I came on to say the same. I drove over one at twilight last week without seeing it till I was virtually on it. I wasn't distracted and my eyesight is fine - they are just really hard to see in low light.
foxgoosefinch · 11/11/2021 19:04

There couldn't be a better metaphor for the current state of identity politics, than the ignoring of the RNIB's written concerns about the effect of these crossings on literal visibility for disabled people, in favour of the entirely metaphorical "Trans Visibility Week." Hmm

Perhaps if a blind person gets knocked over, Camden Council can ponder on the meaning of "literal violence", too?

2020isnotbehaving · 11/11/2021 19:13

Perhaps they can paint it purple for disability history month starter for 10…/ anyone? Nov 19th-19th Dec don’t worry it pass you by completely maybe one program on bbc 4.
