It seems to be causing safety issues…
I've been watching this play out on twitter for the last couple of days. Transport for all have said concerns about accessibility for people with disabilities has been weaponised Confused twitter.com/TransportForAll/status/1458146144870178818

The council man whose been promoting this crossing is baffled about why no one who has visual or cognitive Impairments has contacted him on twitter, I mean just think about that for one moment 🤔 idiot

mobile.twitter.com/DannyBeales/status/1457751785670598660
Even the TRA is calling him out on it.

OrangeJuiceAndNoodles · 11/11/2021 00:07

Well why should we care about disabled people?

Sarcasm obvs

Lovelyricepudding · 11/11/2021 00:07

What would happen if there were an accident on one if these 'street installations'. They don't comply with the legislation on zebra crossings so presumably the rules are the same as for a random piece of road - the car has priority.

londonmummy1966 · 11/11/2021 00:22

Some of the Lambeth rainbow crossings are just outside a park. Kids run out and over them all the time not realising that they are a light controlled crossing and not a zebra. It's an accident waiting to happen. If they want a rainbow (and it is pretty) they could have painted the park railings in multicolours - just as effective and a lot safer.

Owlmeow · 11/11/2021 00:37

I can't believe some of you want to put the safety of disabled people and children ahead of the feels of small group of fantasists. Monsters.

Chloemol · 11/11/2021 01:07

These are light controlled crossings, not zebra crossings

Can you imagine the havoc if they did paint actual proper zebra crossings? No car would need to stop as they are not correct

LobsterNapkin · 11/11/2021 01:52

I really dislike things like this on the road in busy spots.

The ones in Canada are more like our regular crossings and they seem to use them only where there are lights which was wise, at least where I live, but still problematic for dogs.

They have however started writing slogans like Black Lives Matter in very large letters in certain spots, which are meant to be seen from hills or tall buildings. When you are driving on the road though they are confusing as it just looks like a bunch of new markings and you can't tell what they are.

I just don't understand why this sort of built infrastructure needs to be used for what seems like nothing so much as propaganda messaging. Over the past five years, totally apart from this, we've had huge changes to street layouts to accommodate more bikes and slow traffic. Which is great but it means new road markings, barriers, signs. It has become very visually busy and the sloganeering doesn't help. Reading BLM on the road doesn't make me think differently about the movement or it's political goals and I doubt it has that effect on anyone else either.

KittenKong · 11/11/2021 07:43

I suspect the opportunity for a photo op with the mayor and some ‘fabulous’ on trend folx is far more appealing and photogenic than having to stand next to, yuk - sick, old or disabled people... not enough rainbows.

But who is more likely to be voters? Those who are more likely to be long time residents who use the local facilities, schools, healthcare... or people who are probably students/young adults who are temp residents (who will move further out when they get older).

Siablue · 11/11/2021 07:54

@Cismyfatarse

Is it worth tweeting photos of our local black and white zebra crossings and thank x council for standing up for LGB people? Tagging in LGB Alliance?

It might cause an excess of frothing but I am up for it!

No because that would deliberately inflame the issue. This has nothing to do with trans rights. All of these colourful crossings are bad. Disabled people need to be able to safely cross the road. That is the primary reason for crossings not to sign your political views.
andyoldlabour · 11/11/2021 08:18

What they have done with those crossings contravenes the RTA and if there is an accident then a car driver will not be liable for prosecution. Why would any motorist stop when confronted with this?
Anyone who is responsible for this madness is breaking the law.

Road markings

 1. Subject to the following provisions of this Part of this Schedule—

(a)within the limits of a Zebra crossing the carriageway shall be marked with a series of alternate black and white stripes;

(b)the Zebra controlled areas shall be marked with give-way lines, a line of studs and zig-zag lines,

of the size and type, and generally in the manner, shown in the diagram at the end of this Part of this Schedule

Large amounts of paint on the roads reduces grip in the rain and is unsafe for cyclists.

BigFatLiar · 11/11/2021 08:50

Apparently there are other patterns in London, part of Sadiq Khan's great plan for more art. Looks awful.

Remember it's not a zebra crossing, it's a pelican crossing (light controlled), pelican crossings don't have the black and white stripes so the painting is just a pattern. Provided the paint is suitable for the roadway its just a bit naff.

NecessaryScene · 11/11/2021 08:52

But that's a key part of the problem. LOTS of people think they ARE zebra crossings, because of the decoration. Some confused people will be expecting traffic to stop for them.

NecessaryScene · 11/11/2021 08:55

And I note that the rainbow one in the horse video wasn't actually any sort of crossing at all, as far as I can see - neither pelican nor zebra...

PlanktonsComputerWife · 11/11/2021 08:59

Looking forward to seeing the police horse put on trial for TERFy hate crimes.

Paint shouldn't be on the road in the first place. The road markings are specific thermoplastics that all need to pass highway regulations.

If you look at the picture you'll see the traffic lights and the 'red man'
NecessaryScene · 11/11/2021 09:18

All the other crossings shown seem to be pelican, but the horse one has nothing apart from the rainbow, I'm pretty sure.

(Why are we having to do photo/video analysis to figure out what road signage is intended to be???? Should be blindingly obvious!!)

KevinTheKoala · 11/11/2021 09:24

Not the point at all but does anyone know why the horses are so spooked by the colours? It's horrible to watch they look so scared. I don't know why they can't just put murals up on the walls if they want to have something that shows inclusivity rather than change something that actually has a function and people (and animals) have been taught how they work for years.

KittenKong · 11/11/2021 09:30

My sister did tell (she has horses) - I think it’s the pattern rather than the colour. Other animals won’t be happy with it either but I can’t see many sheep or cows wandering over them!

The video looks like its just dropped kerb in somewhere like a shopping area, don't know the area so just a guess.

As for why the guessing, it' shouldn't be necessary - you stop at lights. Its a story looking to stir up lots of indignation by mixing different things up. At least they kept control of their horses. I don't know much about horses but I think they can get spooked quite readily, there's the famous incident of the horse in the grand national trying to jump over a shadow.

NecessaryScene · 11/11/2021 09:36

Yep, on the whole I agree that the traffic should be clearly responding to the lights.

It's the pedestrians (including animals) I'm more worried about.

That rainbow one is the worst because there are no lights, pedestrians may be expecting traffic to stop, and traffic has no real reason to stop. Although as you say, it may be a sort of semi-pedestrianised shopping area? That road may not even be open to through traffic.

ScreamingMeMe · 11/11/2021 09:36

I saw a disability activist being called transphobic for speaking about this. I cant remember who it eas now, but it was pretty disgusting.

Doubletoilandtrouble · 11/11/2021 09:38

My DH is disabled. A slippery crossing (if the paint indeed makes it more slippery) would be a real danger to him.

I am actually quite upset by this.

KittenKong · 11/11/2021 09:41

BigFatLiar - these are police horses. They are trained to be as unspookable as horses can be. They were struggling to keep control - and if you know horses, you know how bloody strong they are and how dangerous this was.

No ‘stirring’ necessary - these markings are dangerous.
