Trying to look at the ‘how to pass as a woman’ more sympathetically, the whole list shows the extent to which a would be trans woman might really be following an illusion and dream - ever elusive.
The state of imagined femininity must represent some sort of hope for something.
Is it to be ‘sexy’, desired, chased or subservient? Is it to be more emotional, among a nurturing friendship group? Is it to feel close to lived females in the person’s life when the males were awful? There must be lots of different reasons.
I agree the instructions are laughable when compared to reality. They read like 13 year old girls’ magazine instructions of the 1960s ( which I used to spend hours reading and love). It is true … where is Joan of Arc, Bodicea or George Eliot. But it would be interesting to understand what these men are after.
The other thing is that though these traits might be regressive stereotypes many women do actively want to conform to stereotypes too. Whether to be like an ethereal waif; or wear hair extensions, have injections to have fish like lips bug breasts and botox forehead.
The other way round - how to pass as a man might have useful tips for women at work. Margaret Thatcher famously had coaching to lower her voice. On a recent thread suggesting how to write to a company about why it is wrong to have pronouns, some suggested the original writer should have avoided any hint of emotion - the equivalent of a level voice. Angela Merkel, Nicola Sturgeon and Theresa May have short haircuts ( though not butch) and they would not have had the power they did had their hair been long in our particular societies where the leaders have been men before.
So I am suggesting people do manipulate stereotypes so as to adjust other people’s perceptions and treatment of them or to achieve certain outcomes.
We are a long way from stereotypes not affecting outcomes.
I presume trans people want to do this to the nth degree when they try to ‘pass’.
