I have just seen this link anout an “intergender” mma fight - labelled barbaric and brutal in the comments.
Is there any difference between this fight and a fight between a woman and a self identified woman?

The difference would be that the women would know upfront that they were fighting a male who had the sex derived advantages.

RufustheBadgeringReindeer · 31/10/2021 08:58

What is the actual point of mixed sex MMA fights

Obviously the male is going to win

Its like attempting to play dd at pictureka, but obviously much more violent

And i agree with helleofabore at least the woman know what she was walking into

rabbitwoman · 31/10/2021 09:11

There is definitely a fiction going around that women are as strong as men.

I was berated at a training day (I work in a school!!!) for daring to suggest that boys were stronger than girls.

I train in an mma martial arts club, sometimes with men or older boys. The instructor always tells them they can be as tough as they like with me and when he's gone I always say, no you can't, I am a woman and don't want to get hurt.....

In the depths of an argument about trans rights my sister said that me and her could easily beat up our brothers (???!) and when I pointed out that I always remind men in training to go careful because I am female she was outraged and said I should be ashamed.

Where does this come from? Watching kick ass female agents in James Bond, the avengers, kill Bill, all over telly and films - tiny little actresses like scarlet johanssen and gil gadot constantly high kicking and making mince meat of the opposition.

So what is the point of these 'intergender' mma fights? Hopefully to put these ridiculous ideas to bed for once and for all so we can go back to having our own sports, safe spaces and identity.....

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 31/10/2021 09:56

I work with a lot of young women who are fully bought into the "women are as strong as men" myth. I casually dropped into conversation once that the grip strength of a 30 year old woman is equivalent to that of a 70 year old man.

They were genuinely saddened to hear that and said it was "depressing."

Some of them have misinterpreted "equal" as "same."

Floisme · 31/10/2021 10:04

I've had stand up arguments with young women at work for saying women aren't as strong or as fast as men.

I agree superhero films have a lot to answer for and it's all over mainstream TV too. I was watching a crime drama the other night and there was a sequence, 2-3 minutes long, where a female cop chases a young, physically fit, male suspect and not only catches him but pins him down and restrains him.

rabbitwoman · 31/10/2021 10:04

My 80 year old dad, by the way, can still carry a washing machine out to the car by himself. He is much stronger than I am, aaaand he has been on cross sex hormones for about 14 years (for prostate cancer, although some quick research tells me they are of the same family as cross sex hormones).

That's what really sealed the deal for me. If my 80 year old dad wanted to compete against me at a strength based sport, he would probably win.

Although, he is also really tough.....

Kendodd · 31/10/2021 10:13

This idea the women are as physically strong and fast as men is not just wrong, its dangerous. If we are the physical equal of men how can they rape us? We could just fight them off. I wonder if this idea plays any part in low conviction rates.

I suggest you have a school (secondary school) arm wrestling competition.

rabbitwoman · 31/10/2021 10:16

You know what happened when I dared suggest boys were stronger than girls?

The young male teacher leading the training pointed to his female boss and said 'she can beat me in an arm wrestle!!!'

So I don't think arm wrestling is the answer...... 😂😂

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 31/10/2021 10:18

Is there any possibility you can switch clubs? This is an accident waiting to happen, especially with teenage boys. In my experience, teenage boys are the most likely demographic for training accidents when training with female classmates because they also don't yet know their own strength, either

Zebradanio · 31/10/2021 10:21

It is dangerous. It seems to be a narrative pushed to women that they can be equal if they just work harder at it. But men know they are generally far stronger than women. No matter hard women work at it. Working hard won't make them equal in strength.

FemaleAndLearning · 31/10/2021 10:35

My niece told me that Black Widow in the comics had a similar serum to Captain America which gives her super strength. This was casually missed in all the films!

Agree with previous poster equality doesn't mean being the same.

Equal but different.

The MMA intergender fighting just seems like a legitimate way of watching women getting beat up. I know technique will be involved but strength has to play a big part.

I was very good at arm wrestling when I was about 12 and could beat a lot of the boys but then they had not really gone through puberty at that age so we were more equal in terms of strength.

rabbitwoman · 31/10/2021 10:42

I am five foot and a (nearly) black belt.

I can very confidently say that against even an average male attacker all the training and technique don't really make a difference!! The best thing about martial arts training is that it teaches you not to freeze (hopefully) and maybe one or two moves that might give you time to run away, if you are lucky....

But at the end of the day kickboxing, karate, judo, even BJJ are sports, designed for a sporting environment with rules and regulations for preventing serious injury. It's scary to me how many people say things to me like 'you would be okay in a fight!' or 'I feel safe with you around!'

rabbitwoman · 31/10/2021 10:44

(although, my proudest moment was when a six foot 5 fellow got me in a 'playful' headlock and I pinched the nerve on the back of his leg.... He wasn't a nice man)

TheWeeDonkey · 31/10/2021 10:46

What is the point of actual mixed sex MMA fights

Some people really get off on seeing a woman get the shit kicked out of her.

PumpkinGin · 31/10/2021 10:51

Do you do JKD as well rabbitwoman? I did it for a while from a kickboxing background. It was all about fighting as dirty as possible, eyes, groin, any object that could be used. No rules, just winning the fight (all simulated of course, people could be seriously injured otherwise).

I thought that was quite useful for self defence….

rabbitwoman · 31/10/2021 11:00

Don't get me wrong, it's all useful. I have used it myself a few times. If I was really backed into a corner with no escape, yes, I would fight as dirty as I could but the trick is not to freeze, and keep your reaction times sharp because split seconds are important.

Of course, the absolute best bit of self defense advice that every instructor I know gives on the first lesson is to walk away from a fight. That can be the hardest thing. Training in martial arts can give you false confidence, an idea that you can handle yourself in any situation, but if someone tried to rob me at knife point I would give them everything I had and walk away....

You what????

What a wanker. I suspect the instructor wants to get off on violence being done to women. Can't you find a different club? What do the men think of the instructor saying this?

@Floisme I feel sorry for you having to work with such dim or delusional women.

So I don't think arm wrestling is the answer...... 😂😂

Which would be a exception not the rule (also I would question his fitness and testosterone levels if the female is just average)

That's chilling to think @kendodd . Lots of people want to find blame in the victim and this would increase that proclivity.

Absolutely. I did some Krav Maga self defence training for women and the male instructor was very clear- most men will over power you- do all you can to get away before it gets to that point. He was very big on training your gut instinct (first tool) and your assertiveness (second tool) as being more important than training how to get out of a chokehold. And this is how the guy makes his living- training Krav Maga- but he was telling us straight- ultimately it probably won’t stop you getting hurt if a man wants to hurt you.

rabbitwoman · 31/10/2021 11:58

EarthSight - loads of women I know seem to be confident that they can beat a man in an arm wrestle, and proud of it. But I know that in any type of physical contest a man will generally hold back for fear of hurting a female opponent, even if sub consciously. That's if they don't want to hurt a woman, of course.....

RachelHasThoseInBurgundy my little brother gave up teaching self defense, because the women in his class just didn't like what he was teaching them. They would say, how do you get out of a choke hold? He would say, you can't. Just don't get put in a choke hold. Walk on the opposite side of the road to a man if you are alone, don't be frightened to yell out 'keep away', etc....

You know what? A lot of self preservation is rudeness. And Lord knows, no one wants to be seen to be rude!!!!

RachelHasThoseInBurgundy · 31/10/2021 12:10

You know what? A lot of self preservation is rudeness. And Lord knows, no one wants to be seen to be rude!!!!

This is the crux of it. We are so conditioned to want to be seen as lovely. The worst thing someone could say about us is that we are a rude cow. We’d rather let ourselves get into a chokehold with a man and have to scratch and kick him than tell him to fuck off from a distance Confused that’s fucked up.

Be as rude as you need to be.

Kendodd · 31/10/2021 12:28

I wonder if women did work a bit harder, maybe we could be as tall as men as well?

rabbitwoman · 31/10/2021 12:53

I wonder if men trued a bit harder would they actually be able to grow a little human being inside them and push it out..... 😂😂

But actually, why on Earth would they!!
