Intergender MMA fight

I have just seen this link anout an “intergender” mma fight - labelled barbaric and brutal in the comments.
Is there any difference between this fight and a fight between a woman and a self identified woman?

@Kendodd

I wonder if women did work a bit harder, maybe we could be as tall as men as well?
in that picture that was circulated a few months ago of the trans gender MMA fighter, she was the shorter one. Also, cis female MMA fighters were asked and consented to a trans fighter fighting with them (so they were not "surprised" as claimed above).
PurgatoryOfPotholes · 31/10/2021 13:14

Oh yeah?

Fallon Fox came out as transgender after one amateur fight and two professional fights.

Selkiesarereal · 31/10/2021 13:21

It is a dangerous myth. I remember catching the post win interview with Laura Kenny and Katie Archibald after winning gold in the Maddison, thanking the junior boys team for letting them train with them.

They knew that they couldn’t train with their equivalents in the men’s team but with a much younger age group and they are exceptional cyclists.

We are not physically equal and this should be acknowledged.

Well im taller than DH….I obviously put the effort in

(Obviously he is much stronger than me…)

RachelHasThoseInBurgundy · 31/10/2021 13:23

Cis female?

RufustheBadgeringReindeer · 31/10/2021 13:25

Ill be honest ive got absolutely no patience whatsoever with people who think that as a class women are just as strong as men

Or women just don’t try hard enough at sports to beat men

Those people are so fucking stupid im surprised that they can walk and breathe at the same time

I try very, very hard on here to be polite and not call people stupid but this is s step too far for me

but we are talking about a subset of MMA fighters, i.e. women who will be at the stronger end of the spectrum, not a "class".

A) the thread is talking about all sorts of people believing that women are as strong as men…not just about the MMA fighter

B) the male subset of MMA fighters is stronger than the female subset of MMA fighters

Obvs

I agree with you and reiterate my first comment. Some people just enjoy seeing a woman get the shit kicked out of her by a man / male person.
PurgatoryOfPotholes · 31/10/2021 13:41

Interestingly enough, male MMA fighters are at the strong end of their spectrum, too.

And men punch over 2.5 times harder than women.

This means that for a technically talented fighter in her class, trying to block a male competitor may be like trying to block a oncoming JCB. He can just push through her block.

RufustheBadgeringReindeer · 31/10/2021 13:42

Yeah I don’t reckon youre wrong weedonkey

Journeyofthedragons · 31/10/2021 13:45

There's a famous video clip where the female interviewee just won't accept that men are genetially physically stronger than women (cut to 2.50)

[/quote] you just need to apply a lot of qualifiers, like "the average", etc. In our family, our daughter is by far the strongest, stronger than dad or her (taller) brother. "As a class" is meaningless for many situations.

What are you blethering on about?

RachelHasThoseInBurgundy · 31/10/2021 13:53

the other female fighters

How do you know they are cis?

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 31/10/2021 13:55

How is this being measured? Deadlift personal best? Number of swimming pool lengths? How many wooden boards she can punch through?

Tomatalillo · 31/10/2021 13:59

It is crazy how this myth has taken off. The idea of equality is surely that women have equality of worth.

That women have the same intrinsic value as human beings as men, regardless of physical differences (and ignoring the many unscientific prejudices that men made up to discredit women). Not that we have to be identical or better to be equally valued.

nauticant · 31/10/2021 14:12

I'd not seen that clip before Journeyofthedragons. It is fascinating. One interesting thing is that she believes that we should move away from stereotypes, ie masculinity, and therefore as a consequence we must also reject material reality that in some ways has a correspondence to the stereotypes. A throwing-the-baby-out-with-the-bathwater way of thinking about the world.

lifting of furniture, mostly.
PurgatoryOfPotholes · 31/10/2021 14:23

CatherinaJTV

but they didn't have a male MMA fighter fight the women, so how is this relevant?

So, your contention is that female MMA fighters can be stronger than male non-MMA fighters, and that the males involved here weren't MMA fighters?

I'm not sure why you're making this point, given the article explains that both of the two male fighters beat their female opponent.

ArabellaScott · 31/10/2021 14:34

Have you ever been punched by a man, Catherina? (I sincerely hope not.)

It's quite stunning, often literally. The strength of a male, past puberty, is phenomenal. Even small, weedy men.

I am staggered that anyone thinks that 'men are stronger' is a problematic statement, anymore than 'men are larger' is problematic. Simple statement of fact.

Given the facts, it seems dangerous to me to teach or suggest that there is no difference in the strength of males relative to females. This could easily lead to situations where females are put at risk of serious injury.

ViceLikeBlip · 31/10/2021 14:36

The biggest difference here is not only that the women knew what they were getting into, but also that they would have been allowed to turn down the fight without being branded transphobic.

As an aside, I think there's quite a lot of overlap in physical prowess. Men do tend to have significantly greater upper body strength, and also body mass, which makes them good at attacking people (!) but for a lot of more every day activities/sports (non contact ball sports and endurance events spring to mind) women are more capable than some believe. Of course elite athlete vs elite athlete, the man will win, but for example, at work we've never needed to segregate the annual tennis competition by sex.
